A Dark Cannon is a weapon wielded by high-ranking members of the Subspace Army during The Subspace Emissary in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Created to emulate the effects of Tabuu's Off Waves, it fires dark, arrow-shaped beams (which resemble Palutena's Arrows, but dark purple) that revert any character they hit to their trophy form. Dark Cannons can rapid-fire once initially charged up, and their shots can curve, but an aware target can dodge them somewhat easily. The shots can cause explosions if they strike objects or terrain. The shots can hit a character and knock him/her backwards (as with Diddy Kong) or plow straight through the character's body (as with Peach/Zelda).

Dark Cannons are very large and unwieldy; despite Falco being able to kick one high into the air, only characters of above-average strength can carry them properly, based on the difficulty False Peach/Zelda had aiming one.
A Dark Cannon (ダークキャノン, Dāku Kyanon) is a powerful weapon of the Subspace Army. The large, bulky weapon vaguely resembles a black dragon head and has the power to turn Smashers into trophies in a single shot.

Dark Cannons are mostly used by Wario and Bowser, although Ganondorf also wielded one late in the story and False Zelda/Peach used one which was destroyed by Link/Pit. The Dark Cannon belonging to Bowser was destroyed by Falco. Tabuu himself does not need to use a Dark Cannon as his Off Waves have the same effect over a larger area (However, another one of his attacks visually resembles a Dark Cannon).
After a somewhat lengthy charging period in which the "mouth" of the weapon glows orange, it fires a thick, black arrow-shaped beam that instantly turns any character it hits into a trophy. The shots mainly move in straight lines but can curve slightly in seemingly random directions; should a shot hit something that cannot be turned into a trophy, it will cause an explosion. Once initially charged up, Dark Cannons can proceed to fire multiple shots in quick succession; the charge time needed seems to lengthen the longer it goes without firing.

Despite its potentially high rate of fire and fast shot speed, Dark Cannons are not very hard to dodge if the target is aware; in fact the only times the weapon is seen connecting is on targets that are incapacitated or ambushed. They can also only affect one target at a time - once a shot connects, it quickly fades away even if it pierces through the target. As a result, the victim must be quickly taken away from their partners to prevent an easy revival. Dark Cannons are also large and unwieldy; they are too heavy for a normal human to carry, so only those of above-average strength can use one properly.
Although the Dark Cannons were built to turn all the characters into trophies, they could only target one person at a time. This forced those with Dark Cannons to take the trophyized fighters away from their groups to prevent them from being easily revived. The characters that were hit by a Dark Cannon at some point include Peach, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Ness, Diddy Kong, and Bowser.

In The Subspace Emissary, Dark Cannons are provided to the field Smasher accomplices of the Subspace Army: Wario and Bowser. Wario used his to capture either Peach or Zelda from the Midair Stadium followed by Ness at The Ruined Zoo. Bowser used his to capture Donkey Kong and whichever princess Wario did not get; shortly afterwards this princess attempted to use the weapon on either Mario and Pit or Link and Yoshi as the pair passed by The Lake Shore, but was thwarted by the other pair destroying the weapon in a single sword slash. Bowser then procured another Dark Cannon and attempted to get Fox and Diddy Kong, but Falco interrupted him and destroyed the weapon with several Blaster shots. Finally, after the Subspace Gunship is destroyed, Ganondorf uses a Dark Cannon to remove Bowser from the picture in his attempt to seize power of the Army.

Bowser with a Dark Cannon.

A Dark Cannon (ダークキャノン, Dāku Kyanon) is a powerful weapon of the Subspace Army. The large, bulky weapon vaguely resembles a black dragon head and has the power to turn Smashers into trophies in a single shot.

Trophy Description
