In each dungeon, Link had to explore the dungeon in order to find keys and other items to proceed through the dungeon. If Link missed something, he had to backtrack and find it at some point. In ''[[zeldawiki:Zelda II: The Adventure of Link|Zelda II: The Adventure of Link]]'', the dungeons were renamed to palaces and used a side-scrolling format, which added platforming elements. In ''Melee's'' Adventure Mode, there is a ''Zelda''-themed level called Underground Maze. The level is similar to the dungeons in ''The Legend of Zelda'' and ''Adventure of Link'', except there are no locked doors or keys to collect. Since the ''Super Smash Bros.'' games are side-scrolling games, the level has a side-scrolling format similar to ''Adventure of Link''.

The design of the sword and pedestal in this stage are based on their appearances in ''Ocarina of Time''. The presence of multiple swords in this stage could be a reference to the fake swords in ''A Link to the Past'', used as decoys for anybody in search of the real Master Sword.
 
In ''The Legend of Zelda'', a common enemy in above ground were [[zeldawiki:Octorok|Octoroks]], which were land creatures that would shoot rocks at Link. In ''Ocarina of Time'', Octoroks design has changed and are now aquatic creatures. In ''Melee'', the Octoroks are land creatures, but are designed around their appearance in ''Ocarina of Time''. Them shooting rocks at players was retained. In some dungeons in ''The Legend of Zelda'', an enemy called [[zeldawiki:Like Like|Like Likes]] appear in some rooms. Like Likes were enemies that tried to eat Link. Link can defeat them while being inside them to free himself, but if Link has the [[zeldawiki:Magical Shield|Magical Shield]], the shield will be gone and Link would have his old shield back. Like Likes also appeared in ''Ocarina of Time'', but now they spit Link out after swallowing him. The Like Likes eats any shield Link has and any tunic he's wearing (with the exception of the [[zeldawiki:Mirror Shield|Mirror Shield]] and the [[zeldawiki:Tunic#Kokiri Tunic|Kokiri tunic]]), but when Link defeats the Like Like, he gets his stuff back. In ''Melee'', Like Likes appear as enemies and are designed around their appearance in ''Ocarina of Time''. Their ability to eat the player is retained, but they do not steal items. Just as they did in ''Ocarina of Time'', they spit the player out. In later dungeons of ''Ocarina of Time'', enemies called [[zeldawiki:ReDead|ReDeads]] start appearing. They were enemies that paralyzed Link with a scream. They will jump on his back and bite his head, causing damage.
