(The dark circle seems to be pretty common with other effects in Ult, so I'm not sure if it is a property of chain or attacks in general) |

The chain effect is used by a small amount of attacks in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. They are exclusively used for Simon and Richter's attacks that feature the long chain of their whip.
The chain effect is entirely cosmetic: it applies a stabbing visual effect, a straight line in the direction of the attack. It is similar to stab except with green and chartreuse coloring (instead of yellow and purple) followed by a crescent-shaped visual effect going in the same direction.
