Considering the debates we've had with character sorting, I thought I'd make my own ideal sorting style. Obviously I don't intend on the wiki using it, but I thought it would be an interesting thing to come up with.
The twelve original characters are based on their roster position in the first game, but with the unlockables being moved to the end and their position being relative to fellow unlockables.
Luigi and Jigglypuff are moved to be next to Mario and Pikachu, respectively, to keep all series together.
Yoshi is moved to be between Luigi and Donkey Kong to show the Yoshi series' relationship with the Mario series. He is listed before Donkey Kong due to the larger connection (with several Mario characters being featured in Yoshi and vice versa, whereas only a few of DK characters have appeared in Mario games and no Mario characters appearing beyond cameos in DK games).
Now all Melee characters are added. New characters to an already existing series are placed into their series, with placement relative to their position on the roster, while new series are added with placement relative to their positions on the roster compared to each other, resulting in something like this:
All clones are moved directly to the right of their originals, to keep them together but still keeping Mario as the first character listed. Peach and Bowser are switched, keeping the Mario heroes together, and Ganondorf (who is kept with the Zelda series rather than moved to F-Zero), Zelda, and Sheik are moved to be after Young Link.
Then we add the Brawl newcomers. As with Melee, the newcomers to an existing series are placed with their series, while new series are placed at the end with position relative to each other.
Wario is moved to be between Yoshi and Donkey Kong (again, listed before Donkey Kong because of Wario Land, which started as a sequel to a Mario game). Toon Link is moved to be after Young Link, keeping him close to his original, but after Young Link because Young Link is a full clone. Sonic is moved to be before Snake due to his closer relationship with Nintendo.
And now we add the Smash 4 newcomers. Same process as last time...
Dark Pit is placed between Pit and Palutena, since he is a clone of Pit. Similarly, Lucina is moved between Marth and Roy- she is listed before Roy since Roy is a semi-clone in his appearance as DLC. Rosalina & Luma is moved to be before Bowser, once again to keep the heroes and villains separate. Sonic is moved to the end, before Pac-Man, while Snake is moved to between Ryu and the Mii Fighters, once again due to his loose connection to Nintendo. Lastly, Mega Man and Ryu are moved to be before Pac-Man, matching the order in which they were announced (besides Sonic being first). Ryu stays with Mega Man, since they are both Capcom.
So that's my basic layout. Feel free to talk about it on the talk page, although I'd like to avoid people just saying "yeah no". If you actually have criticism or like it share. But if you're just gonna say it's bad then don't. I'll make an assumption based on the lack of people talking at all.
