Water is an attack type in the Super Smash Bros. series that encompasses water-based attacks. There is also an effect that is also known as Water. The type and effect are entirely separate: for example, a move can be Weapon-type with a Water effect, Water-type with a Battering effect, or even Water-type with a Water effect.

There are a few attacks in the Super Smash Bros. series that are water-based. Squirtle, Greninja, and Corrin are the only characters with attacks that can deal water damage, not counting Kirby copying such an attack or moves that do no damage.
Water-type attacks (but not attacks with a water effect) are boosted by Water Attack stickers in Super Smash Bros. Brawls The Subspace Emissary.

Moves with a water effect are affected by type effectiveness in Super Smash Bros. Brawl; that is, it deals 1.1x knockback to Charizard and 0.9x knockback to Ivysaur. Additionally, Blue Pikmin are immune to attacks with a water effect. Like all effects, enemies and bosses in Brawls The Subspace Emissary each have their own damage multiplier for moves with a water effect.

There is both a Water type and a Water effect, which are not bound to each other.
In Super Smash Bros. 4, the water type is no longer used, although the water effect continues to be. It is not currently known whether the water type returned in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
*The Water type is what causes attacks to be powered up by water stickers.
*The Water effect is what causes type effectiveness; that is, it deals 1.1x knockback to Charizard and 0.9x knockback to Ivysaur, Blue Pikmin are immune to it, and certain enemies have resistance or weakness to it.

The distinction between these two states is a result of the separation of "attacks that use water to deal damage" and "attacks that should be involved in type effectiveness"; this seems to be done so that certain moves will not participate in type effectiveness without being excluded from being powered up by water stickers (for example, so weak fixed-knockback moves are no easier or harder to escape).
Water attacks and the Primary Spirit skill Water Attack ↑ and the Support Spirit trait Water & Ice Attack ↑ as well as certain Spirit Battle conditions in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, water attacks are resisted by the Spirit skill or trait Water/Freezing Resist ↑ and deal more damage to fighters equipped with a Primary Spirit with the trait Water Weakness. If the water type returned in Ultimate, it is unclear whether these modifiers apply to the type or effect.

Out of all the effects in Brawl, water is one of the most useful in the Subspace Emissary—it deals extra damage to fire-based enemies, some mechanical enemies (particularly the R.O.B. Squad), and about half of the bosses.

Squirtle's up smash is an example of a water attack.

Water-type attacks (but not attacks with a water effect) are boosted by Water Attack stickers in Super Smash Bros. Brawl's The Subspace Emissary.

Moves with a water effect are affected by type effectiveness in Super Smash Bros. Brawl; that is, it deals 1.1x knockback to Charizard and 0.9x knockback to Ivysaur. Additionally, Blue Pikmin are immune to attacks with a water effect. Like all effects, enemies and bosses in Brawl's The Subspace Emissary each have their own damage multiplier for moves with a water effect.

In Super Smash Bros. 4, the water type is no longer used, although the water effect continues to be. It is not currently known whether the water type returned in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Trivia

 • There are no stickers that provide resistance to water-effect attacks, meaning that unless Battering-resistance stickers cover both effects (seeing as they use some of the same visual effects), Hydro Jyks are the only enemy whose attack cannot be guarded against by stickers.
