France
France is a Smash region that encompasses the country of the same name. Though many often only recognize Metropolitan France, the scene has active players in its overseas administrations. Due to its size, the region is often split into France's administrative regions: Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, Brittany, Centre-Val de Loire, Corsica, French Guiana, Grand Est, Guadeloupe, Hauts-de-France, Île-de-France, Martinique, Mayotte, Normandy, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Occitania, Pays de la Loire, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, and Réunion. The region borders Spain to the east and Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy to the west. Though large scenes exist thoughout France, tournament activity is the largest in Île-de-France, where the French capital Paris is located, and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, where the French city Lyon is located.
Though tournament activity existed during the 2000s, with France being the location of Europe's first Smash major, Epita Smash Arena 2, it wasn't until Brawl when France was able to establish itself as a notable Smash region. This was especially the case after Bushido Brawl Impact, where Glutonny was able to win the event over Ally, then one of the best Brawl players in the world. Subsequently, several other French players, most notably Leon, saw incredible performances both in Europe and internationally, and as such France was recognized as one of the strongest European regions in Brawl. This reputation continued into the subsequent Smash games, especially in Ultimate, where Glutonny was regularly ranked as one of the best Ultimate players in the world. Tournament activity also remained relatively active throughout the 2010s, with the scene hosting notable Smash 4 events such as Smashdown World and SALT. However, the French tournament scene especially exploded in size during Ultimate, hosting a variety of superregional and major events such as the Ultimate WANTED series, the King of Fields series, COLOSSEL 2022, and Tera; the latter event is also the largest Smash tournament in all of Europe. As such, the French scene is often considered not just the largest tournament scene in Europe, but also one of the strongest, if not the strongest.
