GENESIS 3 (sometimes stylized as GEN3SIS) is the 3rd edition of the Genesis tournament series, an upcoming national tournament scheduled to take place in San Jose, California, on January 15th to 17th, 2016.[1][2] The event will host both singles and doubles tournaments for Super Smash Bros., Super Smash Bros. Melee, and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U in addition to an eight man Super Smash Bros. Brawl invitational tournament and a "Smash Draft Melee Crew Battle", as part of a community Compendium.[3][4] Genesis 3 currently stands as one of the largest Smash tournaments to date, with more than 1,000 entrants for both Melee and Smash 4, as well as the largest Smash 64 tournament, with over 200 entrants.[5]

On December 28th, 2015, it was announced by the Genesis 3 staff that a seeding system would be implemented for both Melee and Smash 4 singles tournaments, which would allow 64 seeded players from Melee, and 32 from Smash 4 to bypass the first round of pools, by floating these players further in the bracket.[6][7] The announcement was followed by imediate backlash from the community and many known tournament organizers, which expressed concerns regarding tournament integrity and the criteria for seeding those players.[8][9][10][11] On December 29th, the Genesis 3 staff made a formal announcement on Facebook detailing the reasoning behind the decision to seed players from both tournaments, while also announcing that it would no longer seed players for Smash 4, but keep the decision to seed players for Melee.[12][13][14][15]
