Charizard (SSB4)

Charizard, known in Japan as Lizardon (リザードン, Rizādon), returns as a playable fighter in Super Smash Bros. 4, revealed with Greninja in a trailer during the April 8th, 2014 Super Smash Bros. Direct. Unlike in Brawl, where it was used as one of Pokémon Trainer's Pokémon, it is now a stand-alone character. Charizard's skin appears to be a brighter orange and its proportions are more in-line with its recent three-dimensional appearances in the Pokémon franchise. For example, Charizard's fangs are smaller than they were in Brawl, which now makes them more proportional to their size in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y. Its voice actor, Shinichiro Miki returns to voice Charizard in this installment, with new voice clips.

Changes from Brawl

Charizard appears to be buffed from Brawl, and the most significant change made to Charizard is that it is no longer part of the Pokémon Trainer, so it is now its own character.

  • Buff Charizard is heavier than in Brawl.
  • Buff Back throw deals slightly more damage, and has strengthened a little.
    • Buff It also has slightly less ending lag, so it can combo into a forward air or dash attack more reliably at lower percentages.
  • Buff Down aerial is stronger, and deals 1% more damage. It has also been sped up a bit.
    • Nerf It can now be sourspotted by hitting late, dealing less damage and weaker horizontal knockback.
  • Buff Forward throw is slightly stronger.
  • Buff Fly grants much more vertical distance.
  • Buff Back aerial is stronger.
  • Buff Forward smash has a new animation and is stronger.
  • Buff Type effectiveness no longer applies, thus removing Charizard's water weakness.
  • Nerf Charizard's new forward aerial deals slightly less damage.
  • Nerf Forward and down tilts deal less damage.
  • Nerf Down throw is slightly weaker (can only start KO'ing starting at 185%), though it's still Charizard's strongest throw.
  • Nerf Charizard, along with Pit and Meta Knight, can no longer glide.
  • Change Down smash has an altered animation.
  • Change Rock Smash is now Charizard's down special, replacing Pokémon Change.
  • Change Charizard's new side special is Flare Blitz, which has been described as a very powerful attack. It turns into a fireball and shoots sideways, but will inflict recoil damage on Charizard if it makes contact with an opponent, similar to how it acted in the games.
    • Buff The addition of this move now gives Charizard a new recovery option.
  • Change Charizard has a new up throw, where it brings its opponent into the air and crashes them into the ground, similarly to Kirby's up throw. Possibly based on Seismic Toss.
    • Nerf It deals less damage.
    • Buff It can combo into a neutral air or forward air on most characters under 45%.
  • Change Up aerial has a somewhat tweaked animation, with Charizard thrusting its head sideways instead of straight up.
  • Change Charizard's new Final Smash is Mega-Evolving into Mega Charizard X.
  • Change Charizard now flaps its wings while dashing.
  • Change Without Pokemon Trainer, all of Charizard's victory poses have changed.
