Charizard (SSB4)

Charizard, known in Japan as Lizardon (リザードン, Rizādon), returns as a playable fighter in Super Smash Bros. 4, revealed with Greninja in a trailer during the April 8th, 2014 Super Smash Bros. Direct. Unlike in Brawl, where it was used as one of Pokémon Trainer's Pokémon, it is now a stand-alone character. Charizard's skin appears to be a brighter orange and its proportions are more in-line with its recent three-dimensional appearances in the Pokémon franchise. For example, Charizard's fangs are smaller than they were in Brawl, which now makes them more proportional to their size in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y.

Changes from Brawl

The most significant change made to Charizard is that it is no longer part of the Pokémon Trainer, so it is now its own character.

  • Buff Charizard is heavier than in Brawl.
  • Buff Back throw deals slightly more damage, and has strengthened a little.
  • Buff Down aerial is stronger, and deals 1% more damage. It has also been sped up a bit.
  • Buff Forward throw is slightly stronger.
  • Buff Fly grants much more vertical distance.
  • Buff Back aerial is stronger.
  • Buff Forward smash has a new animation and is stronger.
  • Nerf Forward tilt deals less damage.
  • Nerf Charizard's new forward aerial deals slightly less damage.
  • Nerf Charizard, along with Pit and Meta Knight, can no longer glide.
  • Change Down smash has an altered animation.
  • Change Rock Smash is now Charizard's down special, replacing Pokémon Change.
  • Change Charizard's new side special is Flare Blitz, which has been described as a very powerful attack. It turns into a fireball and shoots sideways, but will inflict recoil damage on Charizard if it makes contact with an opponent, similar to how it acted in the games.
    • Buff The addition of this move now gives Charizard a new recovery option.
  • Change Charizard has a new up throw, where it brings its opponent into the air and crashes them into the ground, similarly to Kirby's up throw. Possibly based on Seismic Toss.
    • Nerf It deals less damage.
  • Change Up aerial has a somewhat tweaked animation, with Charizard thrusting its head sideways instead of straight up.
  • Change Charizard's new Final Smash is Mega-Evolving into Mega Charizard X.
  • Change Charizard now flaps his wings while dashing.
  • Change Without Pokemon Trainer, all of Charizard's victory poses have changed.

Special Moves

In Super Smash Bros. 4, special moves can be swapped out for different variants, but only a few of Charizard's have been seen. It retains three of its original special moves. Rock Smash is now Charizard's down special as a replacement for Pokémon Change. Flare Blitz is its new side special. Its Final Smash Triple Finish has been replaced by it Mega Evolving into Mega Charizard X. These are Charizard's special moves:

  • Neutral special - Flamethrower: Charizard spits repeated flames that gradually weaken if the attack is held, similar to Bowser's Fire Breath.
    • Custom 1 - Fire Fang: A short-range fire-breathing attack. Hits quickly and continuously to rack up damage.
    • Custom 2 - Fireball Cannon: Fires distinct balls of fire that travel far but do less damage than Flamethrower.
  • Side special - Flare Blitz: Charizard does a very powerful dashing tackle that causes recoil damage upon contact.
  • Up special - Fly: Charizard rises upward while performing a corkscrew. The final hit has great knockback.
  • Down special - Rock Smash: Charizard pulls out a giant rock and headbutts it.

  • Stomps and makes a bizarre purring sound, and also flaps its wings once.

Victory Fanfare

A small excerpt of the music that would play on the title screen of Pokémon Red, Blue and Green Versions, a track which would go on to become the Pokémon Main Theme, which also appears as a standalone track in Brawl. It is shared with Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Lucario, and Greninja.
