Sumabato SP 49 was a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate major held in Daito City, Osaka Prefecture on July 14th, 2024.
Tournament summary[edit]
After underperforming at the previous Sumabato event, #1 seed Miya was one again upset early in pools, losing 0-2 to #64 seed Kashiya in pools (upset factor 11). Although he made a decent Losers run, he was eventually eliminated by Snow 2-3 for 13th, the second Sumabato in a row he failed to qualify for top 8. On the other hand, this marked a breakout run for #46 seed YamaD, who defeated #14 seed Kome 3-2 and #3 seed Yoshidora 3-1 (upset factor 8) in Winners and #4 seed Snow 3-2 (upset factor 7) and #21 seed Tsuna to place 5th, which marked his first-ever top 8 finish at a major. Finally, Tas's run to 13th marked the best placement at the time for a Piranha Plant player in the post-online metagame.
Ultimately, #5 seed Doramigi took the event, defeating Raru in two game 5 sets in Winner's Finals and Grand Finals, marking his first major victory, the first major victory for a solo-Min Min player, the first major victory for a Min Min player in general since ProtoBanham's win at Smash Ultimate Summit 5 in 2022, and the first of three new major winners in the final weekend of the LumiRank 2024.1 season. At 14 years of age, Doramigi also became the youngest player to win a major in an official Smash game (with Forrest having won Paragon Los Angeles 2015 for Project M at the age of 13).
