Bowser (Koopa; クッパ, Kūpā) is the primary antagonist of the "Super Mario" series. His SSB debut was in Melee and he once again returns in Brawl.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Flying Slam can easily result in a suicide kill, which wins the match if both players are on their last stock. Can be used as a grab, even in the air, for high damage, and has very little lag if it hits.
  • Strong attacks
  • Forward Aerial comes out incredibly quickly
  • Up Air is one of the strongest Vertical killers
  • Fire Breath comes out quickly, can be angled, and has almost no lag, making it a good way to stop approaches and build a little damage
  • Bowser Bomb has Super Armor frames and hits on the way up as well
  • Heaviest character in the game
  • Can Crawl
  • Can perform Koopa Hopping
  • Great horizontal recovery
  • Good killer moves
  • Up Special can be used to slide across solid ground and able to deal decent damage to multiple enemies
  • Good at edgeguarding
  • Good dash speed, especially for a heavyweight

Cons:

  • Large target, largest in the game
  • Many of his moves are shorter ranged
  • Poor vertical recovery
  • One of, if not the easiest character to combo in the game.
  • Has no combos. The few combos he has are on 3 characters, are not guaranteed (they can be escaped with proper DI), and are generally only 2 hit combos.)
  • Awful standing grab range (resulting in a terrible shield grab).
  • A lot of his KOs are dependent on his ability to edgeguard opponents, which means they must first be off the edge.
  • Long windup and wind down lag for most of his attacks
  • Players must be able to read their opponents extremely well and must successfully pressure their opponents.
  • Possesses a very slow jumping and landing animation which is one of, if not the major reason he is so slow
  • Players caught in the Flying Slam can flip Bowser over in the air, netting them the win if both are on their last stock

Changes from Melee to Brawl

  • New Side B: Flying Slam
  • Fire Breath can be steered up and down
  • Jump not as short
  • Up Smash has longer range
  • Up Air is faster, but shorter ranged
  • Super Armor on Forward Smash
  • Faster overall character

Role in the Subspace Emissary

Bowser first appears after Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong chase down his troops, who had stolen their bananas. Bowser confronts the two and transforms DK into a trophy, but Diddy escapes. Bowser chases him down, but finds him with Fox McCloud. Fox and Diddy make their escape. While continuing his chase, he is told by Ganondorf to hunt down King Dedede, who had stolen Wario's trophies. He also transforms Zelda/Peach into a trophy and orders her Shadowbug clone to attack Mario/Link and Pit/Yoshi. Bowser and his troops attack an abandonded church, where Dedede is hiding. Bowser steals Peach's trophy and evades Mario and Pit's attacks. After this, he returns to the jungle and transforms Diddy into a trophy and sends his Shadowbug clone to clone the trophy. He flees after Falco Lombardi attacks him and destroys his Trophy Gun. He is next seen with Ganondorf on the Subspace Battleship. They destroy the Halberd, but fail to stop Kirby from destroying the Battleship with a Dragoon. Fleeing into the Subspace, Bowser is betrayed by Ganondorf and turned into a trophy. He is eventually brought back to life and beats up Ganondorf's trophy for revenge, Bowser then helps the heroes take down Taboo.
