Doom Slayer (ドゥームスレイヤー, Doom Slayer), also referred to as the Doom Marine, Doomguy (ドゥームガイ, Doomguy) or just Slayer (スレイヤー, Slayer), is a fictional character from the Doom video game franchise of first-person shooters created by id Software, now owned by Zenimax Media as of 2009, and Microsoft by extension as of 2021.

Origin

Introduced as the player character in the 1993 video game Doom, Doomguy is the protagonist of several Doom video games, novelizations, and other media. The Marine is portrayed as a muscular man standing 6 ft 2 in (188 cm) tall and weighing 230 pounds (104 kg). His face is seen in the game's HUD, where it is shown as a Caucasian male with light brown hair, a buzz cut, and blue eyes. In single-player mode, the Marine wears green armor and a light grey space helmet that conceals his facial features. In multiplayer mode and in the ending of Doom II: Hell on Earth, the player's in-game avatar is based on this depiction, wearing green, red, brown and indigo. The Marine is firing a machine gun that doesn't make an appearance in the final game and fighting a CyberDemon. This image, with the addition of a shotgun, clutched in his left hand, is carried over to the introduction screen of Doom. The Marine appears without a helmet in the cover art of Doom II and in the ending to The Ultimate Doom episode IV, "Thy Flesh Consumed".

The character would reappear in DOOM (2016). Now known as the Doom Slayer, he sports a new set of powered armor called the Praetor Suit. The Praetor Suit reappears, modified with sleeveless gauntlets and a retractable blade on the left arm, in the next sequel Doom Eternal.

As a costume

A DLC costume for Mii Gunner based on the Doom Slayer was announced on October 5, 2021, and will be made available for purchase on October 18th, 2021 as part of Round #11. The Mii Costume is based on the Slayer's most recent appearance as seen in Doom Eternal, and is equipped with the Pistol from Doom (2016).

The opening of his reveal trailer features the Slayer walking towards a red Bowser on Port Town Aero Dive, and shooting it with a Charge Blast. The red Bowser represents a Baron of Hell, and the Charge Blast is a stand-in for the BFG, which is a large and powerful plasma-based weapon from the Doom franchise. The first-person perspective of this scene references how the franchise pioneered the first-person shooter genre. The Slayer is then shown fighting a giant Dark Samus in its white costume on the Ω form of Shadow Moses Island. Dark Samus represents the Cyberdemon, a reoccurring boss fight in the Doom games. Next the Slayer is shown fighting Ganondorf on Battlefield's Ω form. The final shot of the trailer shows the Slayer on the Battlefield form of Find Mii lifting Mario in the air, replicating the Nintendo Switch box art of Doom (2016), with Mario standing in for an imp.

Trivia

  • As with other Mii Costumes based on characters from primarily M-rated franchises, the logo for Doom, the series the Slayer hails from, is absent in the American version of his Mii Costume reveal trailer, being replaced with a wordmark featuring the character's name, despite the wordmark featuring the franchise's name. However, like Dante and Dragonborn, this change was also present in the UK presentation.
