Samus (サムス, Samus) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. She retains her modified Metroid: Other M design from SSB4.
Changes from Super Smash Bros. 4
Aesthetics
- As with all veterans returning from SSB4, Samus's model features a more subdued color scheme.
- Samus has a new air dodge animation.
- Samus has two new victory poses:
- Fires a Super Missile and strikes a pose. The final pose resembles her official artwork.
- Lands down and readies her Arm Cannon.
- Samus's eighth costume, formerly based on Dark Samus, has been replaced with a black and yellow costume as a result of Dark Samus's inclusion as a playable fighter.
Attributes
- Samus has faster horizontal aerial mobility. She also reaches the maximum height of her jumps more quickly.
- Samus' roll is significantly faster.
- Like all characters, Samus's jumpsquat animation now takes three frames to complete.
Ground attacks
- The first hit of neutral attack has set knockback and hitstun, meaning it will struggle to combo into other moves (including the second hit of neutral attack) and is much less safe even at higher percents.
- Dash attack now produces an effect similar to the Shinespark ability.
- Dash attack has increased knockback, allowing it to KO at higher percents.
- Dash attack has more end lag, reducing its combo potential.
- Forward smash has a slightly larger explosion sweetspot.
- Down smash deals more knockback.
- Down smash has an altered ending animation, with Samus keeping more momentum from her kick.
Aerial attacks
- Neutral aerial's animation is faster.
- Back aerial's animation is slightly different. Samus now faces further behind herself while kicking, and curls her leg inwards after.
- Up aerial has slightly better linking between hits.
- Down aerial has significantly reduced landing lag.
- Grab aerial no longer follows Samus's vertical movement, staying in place somewhat similar to its Melee incarnation.
Throws/other attacks
- Standing grab has reduced startup and endlag.
- Pummel is slower.
- All throws deal more damage. This allows down throw to combo more consistently, while back and up throw can now kill at reasonably high percents.
- Up throw has a new animation. Samus now uses her Arm Cannon to blast her opponents upwards instead of using her Grapple Beam.
Special moves
- Charge Shot can now be charged mid-air. A mid-air charge can be cancelled by jumping or airdodging, but doing so incurs additional landing lag.
- Missile and Super Missile have updated designs. Additionally, when firing, Samus's visor and armor highlights change to light blue, in reference to the original Metroid.
- Super Missile travels faster and stalls initially before flying forward, similar to her Turbo Missile custom move from Super Smash Bros. 4. It also deals more damage and has slightly less endlag.
- Samus can drift horizontally when using Missile in the air.
- Screw Attack has less lag before Samus begins falling.
- Bomb has an earlier contact hitbox.
- When Samus unleashes Zero Laser, the jets on the back of her suit now vent flames as exhaust.

- In the game's cover artwork and the "Everyone is Here" cast artwork, Samus' pose matches her pose on the cover of Super Metroid.
