The Fake Smash Ball (スマッシュボーム, Smash Bomb) is an item that is scheduled to appear in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for the Nintendo Switch. It was revealed at E3 2018, and behaves similarly to the Smash Ball.
Upon spawning, the Fake Smash Ball will begin acting similarly to a default Smash Ball, although it tends to drift towards fighters and action instead. When broken, it slows down time slightly and yields a colourful X-shaped explosion which launches nearby players (and therefore usually launches the player who broke it). The explosion has large damage and knockback in the version of the game shown at E3, and is likely to function similarly in the final release.
Design
The Fake Smash Ball's design is similar to that of the regular Smash Ball, but with the thick and thin lines of the Super Smash Bros. logo switched around. Otherwise, it shares the exact graphical effects that the regular Smash Ball has.
Origin
While the Fake Smash Ball is an original item in Smash Bros., it might be a reference to the X Bomb.
Trivia
- As a possible pun, the Japanese names of the Smash Ball and Fake Smash Ball (スマッシュボール and スマッシュボーム, respectively) differ by only a single character.
