Translation Assistancce

Back while I was waiting for SSB4 to be released, I went and translated all of the Brawl event match names. However, there was one that I wasn't able to translate entirely. You know some Japanese, right? I was wondering if you'd be able to help.

ゆけ!ジャイアントドンキー!, ???! Giant Donkey! ---- I don't know what "Yuke" means in this context. This is Event 22: Monkeys Unite.

Thanks. FirstaLasto 20:20, 3 November 2014 (EST)

According to this, "yuke" is a verb for "to conquer/subjugate". So maybe "Conquer! [with] Giant DK!"? Toomai Glittershine   The Awesome 21:18, 3 November 2014 (EST)
Alright, guess I can go with that for now, thanks! FirstaLasto 21:28, 3 November 2014 (EST)

Series symbols

Hi, I know that I'm a bit of a newbie here and all that hasn't done much, but I've noticed that some of the series symbols aren't traced correctly, most notably those of Metal Gear and Ice Climber (other series include Mario, Star Fox, Kid Icarus, F-Zero, R.O.B. and Nintendo DS).

If you have access to Adobe Photoshop CS5, CS6 or CC, You'll be able to get easy access to most of those series symbols I mentioned by downloading this ZIP archive, which includes DAE models for character symbols in Brawl ripped by someone with the alias "Peardian" (and Photoshop CS5/CS6/CC is able to open DAE files). I think you can use those models to update the ones I mentioned before. As for the DS icon, a more accurate version can be found here.

I would've done all of this myself, if all of those icons weren't protected from regular users overwriting them. Since you seem to be in charge for updating those symbols, I contacted you for this.

Thanks in advance. I hope I'm not bothering you or something.
Arend (talk) 07:34, 7 November 2014 (EST)

Hmm it hadn't occured to me to use the results screen models. I've used SSB4's higher-resolution textures to fix quite a few symbols, and obviously Metal Gear and Ice Climber aren't on that list. I don't see any glaring inconsistencies with those other ones you mentioned, but the whole symbol set could do with an update - it is low-priority though. Toomai Glittershine   The Breegull 09:21, 7 November 2014 (EST)
Okay then. At least thanks for putting it in consideration. Arend (talk) 09:36, 7 November 2014 (EST)

Gfycat extension

Is it possible to use that for the site? I think it would be great for moves subpages. Hitbox animation would benefit greatly from the frame stepping feature, and the bandwidth would be reduced by a lot due to using .mp4 instead of .gif. On the other hand, it would encompass loading external content that’s not hosted here. How do you feel about that? Kadano talk 08:32, 9 November 2014 (EST)

I presume you're talking about Extension:EmbedVideo. I'm not really sure about it. It would be nice to have fewer heavy .gifs on-wiki, but part of the point of the project was to not have to use any external sites. Maybe we could discuss it here. Light / heavy landing vs. no-impact / impact landing

In your recent edit to the Lag page, you exchanged the latter terms for the former. However, I’ve never seen them used anywhere, while no-impact land is frequently used and impact land at least occasionally. As it is now, it’s impossible to find this article by searching for "no-impact lag". I think it would be better to revert the names, but I don’t want to change it without your approval. Kadano talk 14:24, 18 November 2014 (EST)

I don't recall ever hearing the term "impact" used anywhere to reference landings, so I changed them to match what the games' internal state/animation names use. We can always note both terms. Toomai Glittershine   The Interspacial 15:55, 18 November 2014 (EST)

Peach (SSB4) "Changes from Brawl" format

Greetings Toomai. I noticed you radically changed the format in "Changes from Brawl" from Peach (SSB4) page and I wonder why. I believe the older format is much better and has been praised by several users on this wiki. It is encyclopedic and informations are sorted in an extremely clean way, making it very easy to edit. Plus, you seem to have removed several important informations : damage differences and combo potential; informations that competitive players like me enjoy. This is why I would ask you to please reconsider your decision to change the format. However, I do praise the idea of creating a section for patch changes. Thank you and have an nice day! --ZeroBlindDragon (talk) 02:18, 19 November 2014 (EST)

I was hoping I didn't lose any significant information in the switch (aside from very minor stuff like "does 1% more damage"). You can add the info back if you want, but I strongly prefer the current format for two reasons:
  • Points should not depend on other points; each bullet should be able to stand on its own. Therefore, there should be no sub-bullets, for reasons such as it's kind of nonsensical to do stuff like put a nerf as a sub-bullet of a buff.
  • The points should be organized in the order of attributes/properties, neutral attack, tilts, dash attack, smashes, aerials, grabs/throws, floors/edges, and specials. The idea is to shift focus away from just how many nerfs or buffs a character gets, and instead just focus on what the changes are. See Template talk:Buff for discussion on this.
I'm always looking for a better way to organize those lists, so if you have a suggestion that improves on both the old and new version, speak up. Toomai Glittershine   The Ghostbuster 09:19, 19 November 2014 (EST)
How is it "nonsensical" to put a nerf as a sub-bullet of a buff? Isn't it even more nonsensical to not link them together or, even worse, sort them apart? Also, the points were already organized in order of attributes/properties. The old format also focused on the changes Peach got from Brawl. http://www.ssbwiki.com/index.php?title=Peach_%28SSB4%29&oldid=618068#Changes_from_Brawl

The 1st template is very optimal for reading and editing purposes. You state the list of moves, then you state the list of changes each move got. If a property of a move is changed in an upcoming patch, you simply need to find the move and add the change right under it. "Forward aerial" and "Back aerial" do not need to have bullets themselves, however, I believe these words should be in the template. --ZeroBlindDragon (talk) 12:48, 19 November 2014 (EST)
See, I much prefer template 2 here (though in the order buff-nerf-change as opposed to buff-change-nerf), because it's a simple one-level list grouped by move. Many other users seem to prefer template 3 (if only because the current state of the buff/nerf/change templates make it look "cleaner"), but I think we can agree it's sub-optimal in many ways, and I'm trying to put effort towards eliminating it. Template 1 as you presented it here is not inherently bad; my main issue with sub-bullets is when people put in things like "* Does more damage. ** But has less range." - in other words, I don't mind too much if the "headers of sub-lists" don't have any content by themselves. The problem there however is moves with a one-bullet change - having a header for a sub-list of size one is needless inflation, but leaving them headerless causes inconsistency. Toomai Glittershine   The Hammer 14:02, 19 November 2014 (EST)
I see! Then perhaps we can come to an agreement! I am in favor of a single bullet list as long as we have headers like "Forward aerial" and "Back aerial" OR "Smash attacks" and "Tilt attacks" in order to sort the informations better for reading and editing purposes. --ZeroBlindDragon (talk) 15:00, 19 November 2014 (EST)

Just a quick question...

How does one change a username? Because, while Aidanzapunk has been what I've been known for online (it's based off my email address), the high school gaming club I'm in wants to take people to MLG, and because I want to get into competitive Smash, I figured I might as well create a gamertag for myself (and thus, BlueStreak was born).  BlueStreak 21:37, 4 December 2014 (EST)

Sorry to butt in, but I can answer that. You simply ask Toomai for a name change and he'll do it. Simple enough, but he won't do it immediately; he'll most likely want to make sure you really want a name change, so he'll do it in about a day or so, but you'll have to remind him when the time comes. Rtzxy   Reflect! 21:49, 4 December 2014 (EST)
Sounds easy enough. Then yes, I'm sure I want my username changed to "BlueStreak".
And yes, it's a reference to this.  BlueStreak 21:53, 4 December 2014 (EST)

Another thing, and this is just a thought here: do you think we should add something about renaming users to SW:NAME, so users might know how it works and that it actually exists? Rtzxy   Reflect! 22:00, 4 December 2014 (EST)

I support that because, if a user (such as myself) goes to an admin asking how, then that just wastes time; if there's something telling them what they need to do, then that saves a whole lot of time.  BlueStreak 22:02, 4 December 2014 (EST)

Yeah we could do with a codified policy on name changes. Toomai Glittershine   The Prismatic 22:40, 4 December 2014 (EST)

Just out of curiosity...

I'm not upset with the changes or anything, but I'm just wanting to know...what is the point of adding all these .svg files?  BlueStreak 23:04, 8 December 2014 (EST)

A long time ago, all we had for series symbols were the low-quality .gifs given to us by the Brawl Dojo!!. When someone pointed out that we could do better, I remade them into SVGs in the current transparent-black format. A while later, something went wrong and made some of them not work right anymore, so I replaced them with PNGs, which were still better than what we originally had. But the concept of the symbols (one-colour, mostly-simplistic shapes) is still more suited for SVG than for PNG, and now that we've found something that at least dodges the original problem, I'm seeing if we can go back there. Toomai Glittershine   The Producer 23:16, 8 December 2014 (EST)
I see. ...Anything I can possibly do to help?
And another thing...why does your signature keep changing? It's always made me wonder why no two are the same.  BlueStreak 23:18, 8 December 2014 (EST)
I can answer the second question: his signature is chosen randomly from a variety of choices. It's allowed, but complex. Rtzxy   Reflect! 23:26, 8 December 2014 (EST)
Nah, there's not really anything anyone else can do. I'm taking this opportunity to re-do all the symbols from scratch (hence why some of them look a bit different), and I have all the resources I need to do so.
My sig uses what is called "includeonly subst magic". Basically, it uses the subst: syntax to replace a huge amount of decision-making code with only its result; it's pretty tricky to get right, because if done wrong, it either blurges the whole codebase onto the signed page, or it works on itself and wipes itself out. Toomai Glittershine   The Pan-Galactic 23:28, 8 December 2014 (EST)

Anyone can keep an eye on this user, actually (why you specifically mention PikaSamus IDK). By the way, for vandals with inappropriate usernames, telling them to change their username would be the wrong thing to do. Rtzxy   Reflect! 23:37, 14 December 2014 (EST)
I think he mentioned PikaSamus in particular because he was the one to put it up on the noticeboard. Nevertheless, dealing with vandals is under control by the higher-ups (i.e., Toomai or this guy).  BlueStreak Speeds By 23:42, 14 December 2014 (EST)

Fixing

Sorry for my english, certain page tell like Marth (SSB4), Marth is slightly heavier than in Brawl (This tell this is a CHANGE) Right. However, some pages like Peach, Toon link or Kirby telling this is a buff or a nerf. We need to fix that. Jf811 (talk) 16:11, 31 December 2014 (EST)

Say a character is made heavier by 1 point - that's not really important for KO'ing, so it's just a change. But if that 1 point means that an important combo starts working on them, it would be a nerf. So we can't say "all weight changes are buffs/nerfs" or "all weight changes are just changes" - it's a case-by-case basis that we can't throw a blanket over.
So that said, maybe we should start explaining exactly what weight changes do for a character, rather than just saying "is heavier", because that should clear things up. Toomai Glittershine   The Altruistic 18:46, 31 December 2014 (EST)

Why can't they be listed with the buffs followed by the nerfs, followed by the changes? It makes it easier to see how many buffs and nerfs a character has at a glance, and just looks better in general. What exactly is the order you've put them in, anyways? FirstaLasto 16:20, 4 January 2015 (EST)

Can't connect to gamesurge

Sorry I didn't get back into #sw after our matches. I can't connect via the mibbit webchat, and whenever I try to connect to any of the gamesurge servers via HexChat, I get "* Unknown host. Maybe you misspelled it?", even though I clearly didn't. I have no idea what's going on. FirstaLasto 21:22, 6 January 2015 (EST)

I don't know what's going on either; there's no hint of a problem on our end, and I don't recognize that error message. Toomai Glittershine   The Zesty 21:24, 6 January 2015 (EST)
Tried connecting using AndChat, and it said the host was "unresolved". It's almost as if my internet connection refuses to acknowledge gamesurge even exists. I'm going to try using my mobile network. FirstaLasto 21:27, 6 January 2015 (EST)
Same error over LTE, I seriously have no clue what's going on. Unlike wifi, where the "Unknown host" and "host unresolved" errors happen almost the instant it attempts to connect, it takes a few seconds over LTE before it decides that it's unresolved. FirstaLasto 21:31, 6 January 2015 (EST)
No idea, maybe you just have to restart your computer or reboot your router or something. Whatever the cause it should eventually go away by itself. Toomai Glittershine   The Metroid 21:32, 6 January 2015 (EST)
It's probably a bug or a virus. (Smashworker101 (talk) 21:34, 6 January 2015 (EST))
Please don't jump into discussions just to make unsubstantiated claims. Toomai Glittershine   The Incomprehensible 21:36, 6 January 2015 (EST)
I already attempted restarting my computer. I guess I'll wait it out.
Anyways, good matches. That shield break was pretty funny o3o. Also, lol at Yoshi's nair, its so fast it breaks my utilt to aerial combo x3 FirstaLasto 21:41, 6 January 2015 (EST)

It's working now. Dunno what that was about. FirstaLasto 13:03, 7 January 2015 (EST)

Mario takes extra hitlag from electric moves?

I heard in Collision XI commentary that Mario takes more hitlag from electric moves in Brawl (even more than the extra hitlag electric attacks already produce). Is it true, and does it still happen in Smash 4? Blue Ninjakoopa 00:50, 9 January 2015 (EST)

Never heard of that before. I doubt it's true. Toomai Glittershine   The Pan-Galactic 10:40, 9 January 2015 (EST)

"Randomized" Quotes

I just have 3 questions.

So, I made this page, and, as you can tell, it has a lot of quotes on it. The thing is, whenever I refresh my userpage on my phone (and, if I remember right, my laptop as well), the quote that first showed up when I opened my userpage is still there; in other words, it remains unchanged. However, I have noticed one thing...whenever I continuously press "Preview edit" on the quotes page, a different quote does show up. I contacted this user about it, and he said it had something to do with the wiki's cache (or something along that line) and I should wait for it to catch up.

Here are my three questions:

  1. Does it really take this long for the wiki to catch up?
  2. By adding more quotes to it (which I will admit to being guilty of), does it take longer for the wiki to catch up?
  3. Is there something wrong that I am doing with the quotes page itself?

The choose/option tag system intentionally avoids regenerating itself. It will display different things to different users, and because it's part of the wiki parser, refreshing the page won't do anything - most importantly, the more often you visit a page, the less chances you give it to change what it's showing to you. If you want something that's more guaranteed to have different results every page load, you need to lose the randomness and instead go with a "change every second in a fixed order" system, like I have for my signature. Toomai Glittershine   The Obfuscating 10:57, 9 January 2015 (EST)
I mentioned the page refresh thing because it changes the quote for you, as well as these two. It might just be my phone/computer. I dunno. But, about that changing thing you mentioned, how would I change the coding of the page to do that?  BlueStreak Speeds By 11:00, 9 January 2015 (EST)
Here's an example for three items:
{{#switch:{{#expr:{{#time:U}} mod 3}}|0=option1|1=option2|2=option3}}
Note that, as a consequence of being a guaranteed update every page load, it's also a bit more taxing to calculate the page overall. Toomai Glittershine   Le Grand Fromage 11:53, 9 January 2015 (EST)
So, I would just copy-paste the thing you just put up, replace the 3 with however many quotes I have, and put in the quotes for the options?  BlueStreak Speeds By 11:56, 9 January 2015 (EST)
Pretty much. Just ensure that the "mod 3" is the number of options, and the options are from 0 to [options-1]. Toomai Glittershine   The Aurum 11:58, 9 January 2015 (EST)
Alright, I'll do that. Thanks for the help. ^_^  BlueStreak Speeds By 12:00, 9 January 2015 (EST)

Regarding the SSB4 Samus page

Sorry for the inconvenience, but could you elaborate on why you undid my changes? Of course, if it was a format error please let me know. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Reydiance (talkcontribs) 11:51, 11 January 2015 (EST)

It was indeed a format error. We're converting the "changes from previous game" lists to follow the moveset table order and have no sub-bullets or points depending on other points, among other things, as was discussed here. Toomai Glittershine   The Dispenser 11:55, 11 January 2015 (EST)
Okay, thanks or the reasoning. Allow me to add back the changes unrelated to format? - Reydiance —Preceding unsigned comment added by Reydiance (talkcontribs) 12:00, 11 January 2015 (EST)
Of course; I didn't think I saw any, which is why I simply undid the edit outright instead of keeping anything. Also, in order to sign talk page posts, put ~~~~ at the end. Toomai Glittershine   The Obfuscating 12:02, 11 January 2015 (EST)
Gotcha. Reydiance (talk) 12:08, 11 January 2015 (EST)

Your GSP

Is that for your overall GSP or your best for one character? Smash Master 12:38, 12 January 2015 (EST)

It's all from the "stats" page, so I presume it's overall. Toomai Glittershine   The Loony 12:50, 12 January 2015 (EST)
Ok. Smash Master 12:58, 12 January 2015 (EST)
I just checked from the "Stats", those are for you character with the highest, not overall. I had to redo my GSP on my userpage. Smash Master 14:51, 12 January 2015 (EST)

Why is 32 KB such a big deal?

I never really understood why it was that important to keep wiki pages under 32 KB. Is it because it takes a long time to load? Is it because of space and storage issues? Are these issues really that significant or currently present? Awesome Cardinal 2000 21:47, 13 January 2015 (EST)

Historically, certain browsers had a bug/feature where they only accomodated enough memory to save 32kB worth of text in text boxes. As a result, saving a page with more than that amount would just cut off anything beyond the 32kB point. I don't think it's still a relevant limitation of any proper modern browser, and section editing is a workaround if it's an actual problem, but I recall it occuring not too long ago (probably some mobile browser), so it's probably still at least partly relevant. I would call it a "soft limit"; if a page needs to be longer (e.g. a list), then fine, but it feels like a good point where shortening or splitting should probably be considered.
