FormatEdit

On May 6th, 2019, it was announced that Smash 'N' Splash 5 would run a Waterfall Swiss bracket instead of Round Robin. Details about the Waterfall Swiss Bracket can be found here.

The change was met with some controversy. During the tournament, smashers such as Captain L complained that they were sent into Division 3, the lowest division, despite only dropping one set.[1] Furthermore, Lui$ and Atomsk both went 6-0 in their pools, however Lui$ went to Division 1 while Atomsk went to Division 2, causing some backlash on Twitter; Lui$ and Atomsk later agreed to have a Best of 3 match to see who would enter Division 1, with Lui$ securing the victory.[2][3] Finally, some smashers were wrongfully disqualified due to complications that arose from the format.[4]

As a result of the unpopularity and controversies surrounding the format, Smash 'N' Splash announced that they would be reverting to a double elimination format for future events.[5]

TriviaEdit

  • Wizzrobe placed in top 8 for both Melee and Ultimate singles, making him the first player to do so for both respective games at a supermajor.
    • Interestingly enough, Wizzy defeated both TSM members (Tweek and Leffen) present in order to do so.
    • This tournament marks the first time a Captain Falcon main won a supermajor event since Isai at MLG Los Angeles 2005 in 2005, and is only the second time where a Captain Falcon main had won a major event since then.
    • This tournament also marks Wizzrobe's first ever major tournament win.
  • This tournament ties GENESIS 8 as Tweek's lowest placement in an Ultimate tournament ever, placing outside of top 32 for a 33rd place finish.
    • Coincidentally, this placement is tied with the lowest placement of the other player in contention for the title of the best Ultimate player, MkLeo (who placed 33rd at Umebura Japan Major 2019, which was also a supermajor).
  • ChuDat and PewPewU's set lasted for 43 minutes, which included a literal tie during Game 4 (the match ended in a timeout in which both of their characters ended at 87% each at their final stock), which required a one-stock, 2 minute tiebreaker.
  • Salem and Maister were supposed to do a first-to-10 money match on stream, but Salem unexpectedly backed out (unbeknownst to Maister). He was criticized for this by MkLeo live on stream during NAKAT's interview with Grand Finals commentator Hungrybox. Numerous other players (including Maister) also criticized Salem on Twitter following the end of the tournament.
