SSB4 costumes

Given that the usage of 3DS-quality renders of the costumes is a holdover from the pre-Wii U release timeframe, shouldn't we be using Wii U rips now instead when possible? Miles (talk) 16:28, 16 April 2015 (EDT)

I seem to remember not being able to find a suitable set of images for that last time I looked (as in, either the set was incomplete, or some of its images had far too much blank space). I'll try again. Toomai Glittershine   The Resolute 16:42, 16 April 2015 (EDT)
psst Miles (talk) 16:44, 16 April 2015 (EDT)
Yeah I mean MK and Jigglypuff look atrocious in that set, but if that's all we have, it's all we have. Given that we won't need the images to be 3584px long, I'll be resizing them down to match the size of the existing ones before stitching them together (and I might as well add the Find Mii colours at the same time). Toomai Glittershine   The Honcho 16:52, 16 April 2015 (EDT)
Better? Miles (talk) 16:55, 16 April 2015 (EDT)
I prefer the first ones because there's less blank space overall. Toomai Glittershine   The Metroid 16:58, 16 April 2015 (EDT)
I mean you could always pare down these if you wanted a more specific level of zoom/whitespace. Miles (talk) 17:01, 16 April 2015 (EDT)
Yeah, but then they wouldn't be transparent (minor) and we'd lack Mewtwo completely (not minor). The "character portraits (large)" set is probably our best bet for images that are both decent for most characters and potentially future-complete. Super Smash Bros. 3DS/Wii U Costume Posters

Hello. I have been doing a lot of research about the costumes in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS/Wii U, and I have collected very high-quality posters for all of the alternate costumes (excluding Lucas and Mii Fighters. I have a poster for the normal costume of Mewtwo, but that's it for him). I was wondering if I was allowed to post them. Here is a link to go to the MediaFire download page that I have set up.

http://www.mediafire.com/download/fa86jdjwwci88mh/All+SSB4+Costumes.zip

Please view the images before making any decisions. Thanks! Jamescamden05 (talk) 21:29, 22 April 2015 (EDT)

The main criteria here is: What purpose do you intend? What could whatever you have do that what we currently have can't? Toomai Glittershine   The Zesty 22:50, 22 April 2015 (EDT)
The posters that I have are higher quality than the images currently on the wiki and there are separate posters for alternate costumes, which this wiki doesn't currently have. Jamescamden05 (talk) 06:49, 23 April 2015 (EDT)
Did you even look at the images? Jamescamden05 (talk) 06:49, 23 April 2015 (EDT)
I'm not downloading 81.55MB from Mediafire just to have a look at some images that I think I already have (found on imgur several months ago, they're all JPGs with most being 1500px square). If that's the same set that you have, then we have the following problem: JPGs are bad, and there's no real way to fix them. In addition, any set of images that we can't update for DLC is automatically significantly less desirable.
All that said though, you didn't really answer the question: What do you want to use these images for? Just saying "they're independent images and higher resolution" is not really relevant, because if you have a purpose in mind, I can always upload the original character selection screen images from SSB4-U that I shrunk and composed into what we currently have. Toomai Glittershine   The Altruistic 11:12, 23 April 2015 (EDT)
I was planning to post them to each of the fighter's gallery section so everyone can download them and use them as wallpapers and other things like that. Jamescamden05 (talk) 16:51, 23 April 2015 (EDT)
That's not really what the wiki's for though. We're not an image hosting service; aside from a minority of user images, we only keep images that are relevant to and used in mainspace articles, and only at resolutions that are both not poor and not massive. Toomai Glittershine   The Orchestral 17:55, 23 April 2015 (EDT)
While that may be true, these images are relevant AND good quality. I know that you specifically won't have any use for these, but I know some people will, including me. In fact, I have asked someone that is important in this wiki (Nyargleblargle), and they support posting these images. Why can't you accept the fact that I'm just trying to help? Jamescamden05 (talk) 19:39, 23 April 2015 (EDT)
I'm not denying you're trying to help, I'm just saying that I don't see the benefit. The only real advantage of what you're offering is large size, and unofficial image policy is that any non-screenshot of over 1000 pixels wide is almost certainly too large for several reasons (mostly server-side stuff, like how long it takes to run the "show this at a smaller size" script, but also how long it takes for the average person's internet to load when used on a page). Toomai Glittershine   The Aurum 20:36, 23 April 2015 (EDT)
These images ARE official, and the benefit of having these images are having more pieces of the game on this wiki, which can boost the popularity. Just a suggestion, but I think you should ask the other bureaucrats how they feel about these images, then tell me if they support them. Jamescamden05 (talk) 20:51, 23 April 2015 (EDT)

(Reset indent) This isn't about who wants what; this is about how we work as a wiki. That said, I'm siding with Toomai on this one. What real purpose do they serve to help out the wiki? "Boosting popularity" means nothing, really; the Smash series as a whole is one of the most popular fighting franchises out there, and a shitload of people come here to find information.  Aidan, Master of Speed and Aura  23:44, 23 April 2015 (EDT)

Well, you didn't need to use that language, but it is true that a lot of people come here to find information, so adding these images to the wiki will give users more items to compare with things. I'm not giving up on this because I worked very hard to find these images and I'm just trying to help you, the administration, and the wiki as a whole. I've been part of this wiki for quite a while now and (if you didn't see my user page), I know a lot about all of the Smash Bros. games. And to answer your question, Aidan, I didn't mean to say "boosting popularity", I only said that because I forgot to take my ADHD medicine yesterday and I couldn't think straight, but their purpose is: 1. The more items from the actual game, the better. And 2. Everything I've tried to edit on this wiki has been either deleted or reverted, so this would be a good thing that probably would help and wouldn't be reverted. And lastly, a couple of days ago, I posted some bad quality Mario images, so you can delete those. Jamescamden05 (talk) 07:39, 24 April 2015 (EDT)
Well, for one, I'm notorious amongst my friends for my pottymouth, so you should expect that from me. As for your other points, while yes, I see where you're coming from by saying you're trying to help us out with images, those aren't really the images we're looking for. Like Toomai said, SmashWiki isn't an image-hosting service. Sure, we have a hell of a lot of images on the wiki as of now (with more definitely coming in the future), but images of the alts for different characters, high quality or not, aren't what we need.  Aidan, Master of Speed and Aura  08:30, 24 April 2015 (EDT)
Wow, you guys are persistent. I respect that. Well, if you REALLY don't need it, then in sorry I ever brought it up. Also, I noticed a few days ago that all of the "alternate costume" pages were under the cleanup section. Is there anything that I can do for those pages? If so, please contact me soon. Finally, if you ever DO need those images I wanted to post, then contact me then as well. Jamescamden05 (talk) 15:29, 24 April 2015 (EDT)
To be honest, I have no clue why they're on cleanup, but thanks for the offer to help. That being said, if you want to help with images, then you can check these pages out.  Aidan, Master of Speed and Aura  15:32, 24 April 2015 (EDT)

Your changing one's username policy

No one has opposed it yet. Nyargleblargle (Talk) 15:56, 24 April 2015 (EDT)

I seriously don't get it.

I'm having trouble what is considered what here. Take a look at the difference:

Fractions template

I've often seen fractions displayed as text, and the conversion to percentage stated after that. Because I thought there was a slicker way of displaying it, I made template:fractions modelled after some other similar templates. Could probably get some tweaks, but the basic idea is there at least. Since you're the one who usually deals with that stuff, do you think it would be useful? – Smiddle 13:47, 25 April 2015 (EDT)

User rename

Hi there, I was wondering if you would be able to rename my account to 'Lukey140701'. I'm not sure if this is the right place to request this. Thanks, Amiibae (talk)

This is the right place to do it. You give Toomai the request, and then, in a few days, remind him of it and ensure you want the name change.  Aidan, Master of Speed and Aura  15:24, 25 April 2015 (EDT)

Wii U heads

 1. Lucas placeholder head needs a Wii U filename counterpart, as does the Mii Fighter "combined" icon we doctored up before.
 2. I think the consensus was for Wii U heads over 3DS heads nearly everywhere except very rare circumstances like Umebura 8 and Umebura 9, and any other examples like that could be caught manually. Miles (talk) 19:27, 28 April 2015 (EDT)
What I ended up doing was just leave XL in manual mode, so I only approved changes that were valid. Toomai Glittershine   The Non-Toxic 12:10, 29 April 2015 (EDT)

This. Thoughts? Everyone on reddit is a scrub and thinks this is a new technique. Please enlighten the world so I don't have to listen to crap like that.--BrianDon't try me!  22:07, 28 April 2015 (EDT)

Since no one has opposed me and I have disproven the one person who tried. I will proceed with the move. Speak now or forever hold your peace. I'll wait 1 hour. --BrianDon't try me!  15:57, 1 May 2015 (EDT)
I hold no objections.  Aidan, Master of Speed and Aura  15:58, 1 May 2015 (EDT)

So.

Is there anyway I can talk to you in private? Nothing's wrong, I just want to ask a few questions. I'm on IRC now. Serpent King (talk) 11:38, 30 April 2015 (EDT)

Help?

How does one get onto the IRC? Because I've tried to do so before, but my computer won't let me. Is there something specific that I need for it to work?  Aidan, Master of Speed and Aura  22:55, 1 May 2015 (EDT)

The "newbie way" to use IRC is to go to Special:WebChat. Toomai Glittershine   El Pollo 23:06, 1 May 2015 (EDT)
Well, for some reason, the Web chat thing is stuck on "Connecting to server...", so...  Aidan, Master of Speed and Aura  23:07, 1 May 2015 (EDT)
The other way is to get an IRC client, like ChatZilla, and use it to connect to irc://irc.gamesurge.net/ and then join #sw. I don't really know how to troubleshoot WebChat. Toomai Glittershine   The Quintonic 23:10, 1 May 2015 (EDT)
I got the WebChat to run on my phone for a bit...but then it stopped working, for some reason. That aside, I think I'll go check that out.  Aidan, Master of Speed and Aura  23:25, 1 May 2015 (EDT)

Wikia template

I think it would be a good idea to make a template that would link to certain Wikia pages, in a similar vein to the s template. Maybe something like (wikia url name) (with an example being, as seen over here, streetfighter)?  Aidan, Master of Speed and Aura  09:09, 7 May 2015 (EDT)

If I may butt in, I thought that we were to avoid linking to Wikia at all costs anyway? Serpent King (talk) 09:43, 7 May 2015 (EDT)
We would rather not link to Wikia, but if there's no viable alternative, we probably should. I don't personally think we need a template for it through, because it's not common enough. If you want to make one anyway, go ahead. Toomai Glittershine   The Spectrum 09:53, 7 May 2015 (EDT)

When available, I've tried to link to relevant Wikipedia articles instead should they exist (such as this), and sometimes just skip linking in situations where there's only that as an option. It's not a big evil boogeyman but it is preferred not to when possible. Miles (talk) 09:55, 7 May 2015 (EDT)

So, honest answer time.

So, as this is the first wiki I have ever worked on, I want to kind of see from other people how I am doing. Is there anything that I need to improve upon? Am I doing things by the book enough? I just want to be sure that I am actually being helpful and not screwing things up. As you and Miles are the two most active admins, I figured I would ask you guys. Thanks. Serpent King (talk) 23:47, 7 May 2015 (EDT)

What the crud is going on?

Okey Toomai tell me, WHY YOU DON'T ALLOWED SOMEONE ADD A CUSTOM MOVES LIST!? IS NOT FAIR MAN! Lucoshi (talk) 15:08, 12 May 2015 (EDT)

Unless you mean for Smash4's custom moves, then it belongs in the userspace. Fan-made content has no place in the mainspace. Serpent King (talk) 15:28, 12 May 2015 (EDT)
If you do mean that, we have lists by input (on the special move pages) and character (the character pages). For all intents and purposes, that should suffice. Nyargleblargle (Talk) 15:30, 12 May 2015 (EDT)

Are you referring to how I removed the table of custom moves from the "character customization" page? If so, the reason is this: The information in that table (that is, names and short descriptions) are already in two plages at once (on the character pages and on the special move pages). There is no need to have that info on a third page.

Now there's an argument to be made for listing only the names (without descriptions) of all custom moves on that page, but I don't think that's a good idea either, because the page is supposed to be about the concept of customization, not be an exhaustive list of every possible option. (In fact, it could probably do with further splitting off of the Mii list stuff.) Toomai Glittershine   The Honcho 17:06, 12 May 2015 (EDT)

SWF and XL

Seems like it's about the time to do the Smash World Forums -> SmashBoards page move. Could I ask that XL help out with the relinking? Miles (talk) 11:15, 14 May 2015 (EDT)

Just turning Smash World Forums and SWF into SmashBoards, right? Toomai Glittershine   The Frivolous 12:38, 14 May 2015 (EDT)
That should be sufficient. Doesn't look like there's as many as I had first thought, but still. Miles (talk) 12:39, 14 May 2015 (EDT)
Okay it's going. Toomai Glittershine   The Non-Toxic 12:43, 14 May 2015 (EDT)

What does this mean?

I was getting a preview of my DEVELOP mode page, and it took forever. When it loaded, this was at the top of the screen: [1] Serpent King (talk) 11:06, 18 May 2015 (EDT)

Looks like a one-off oops by the wiki software. I think you can ignore it unless it becomes persistent. Toomai Glittershine   The Undirigible 12:19, 18 May 2015 (EDT)

About the edit to the trophy page

Sorry if this isn't talk page worthy, but I couldn't think of any other way to contact you. A while back I made an edit to the page with pictures of all the trophy cases. I meant to only add a picture of the Mario Bros. trophy case, but I accidentally changed cloud Mario to butt Mario and Fox McCloud to Fox McButt. The reason for this is actually kind of funny. You see, I have this extension on chrome called "cloud to butt" where it automatically changes the word cloud to appear as butt on any page. APPARENTLY it did that while I was editing in the picture. I really apologize, it was not intentional. I hope you can understand PleasePleasePepper (talk) 17:24, 31 May 2015 (EDT)

Sorry about my break from SW:TALK but LOL. Are the images still like this? You should move them if they are. Serpent King (talk) 20:25, 2 June 2015 (EDT)

Icons

Hi,

It seems you uploaded useful icons (see Category:Effect_icons for instance). Are you the author? Do you know which license should be used? Templates have been imported to the Liquipedia Smash Wiki according to the license and I'm currently working at fixing the files license.

Thanks.

I made them from scratch, so use whatever applies to that I guess. As long as I get credit somewhere I think it's okay. (I was thinking of making a second set for you guys so the uneducated wouldn't think you're ripping us off, but that never materialised.) Toomai Glittershine   The Victorious 22:02, 1 June 2015 (EDT)

Question

Is Stall-then Fall was the term that was used often for the years than calling Stall Then Falls as DiveKicks, because of a character uses the attack that pauses it briefly, and then rockets downwards? Luigi540 (talk) 20:04, 2 June 2015 (EDT)

A Stall-Then-Fall attack is named as such because the character stops completely upon use, then plummets. I believe a Divekick is like Sonics DAir in Brawl, where there is no stall. Hope this helps. Serpent King (talk) 20:17, 2 June 2015 (EDT)
I guess your right. When I googled Stall then fall, it shows me more accurate results and examples like Sheik, Toon Link, and Bowser compared to googling divekicks because of its properties. There is a talk page on Stall Then Fall that discuses to be renamed as Divekicks. Luigi540 (talk) 20:35, 2 June 2015 (EDT)
