GENESIS 2 was a tournament held by Sidefx and the crew DBR in July 2011, featuring Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Brawl singles and doubles as main events, as well as smaller Super Smash Bros. and Project M singles side events. It was the successor of the first GENESIS and one of the first Project M tournaments. Held in Antioch, California and sponsored by Red Bull and SABERGAMING, the tournament had one of the most entrants and prize money ever seen at a tourney, with over 300 attendants and $22,000 in prize money.

Summary of events

In Melee, GENESIS 2 was Armada's first major victory in North America, after multiple finishes just outside of first place in the previous two years. It was also the first major that Mang0 competed in without sandbagging since Pound 4 a year prior. The two faced off in grand finals, in a repeat of the previous GENESIS grand finals, with Mang0 playing Fox instead of Jigglypuff, but Armada came out on top this time around, winning the set 3-2.

Taj made an impressive run to 3rd place, upsetting Mang0 in winners' semis, although he later lost their rematch in losers' finals (in which he forfeited the set while down 0-2, after getting four-stocked in game 2). Shroomed also placed 6th using Dr. Mario, upsetting Dr. Peepee in losers' top eight, marking one of the best mid-tier tournament runs of the era.

Crew battles for both Melee and Brawl were extended to West Coast vs East Coast, due to the lack of crews from region specific areas. West Coast ended up winning both crew battles, with Gnes KO'ing Atomsk in the Brawl match and Mang0 taking out Dr. PeePee in the Melee match.

A notorious incident of theft occurred at this tournament, committed by renowned smasher and DBR crew member Zelgadis. After most of the crew members had left the hotel room for the day on Sunday, July 17th, Zelgadis returned to the room with his friend Clayton to search for a jacket he had left behind, and then stole an envelope accidentally left on a bed (containing $6,000 in pot bonuses from Sabergaming), returning to Clayton's home to store the money there. After the rest of the crew accused Zelgadis of stealing the envelope when they found it was missing, Zelgadis reportedly lied to them, repeatedly saying that he had not stolen the envelope. After police involvement and almost four hours of investigation, Zelgadis admitted that he had stolen the envelope, and all of the cash was returned. The incident severely damaged Zelgadis's reputation, leading to him being expelled from the crew and his lack of involvement in competitive Smash after this tournament.

Mew2King also received a red card under the Unity Ruleset Infraction System at this tournament, for "intentional under-performance", when he lost a Brawl pool match against Sade while using Falco and Ganondorf, neither of which being characters he was ever known to seriously use competitively prior to or after this tournament.

Ruleset

GENESIS 2 featured two rulesets for Melee and Brawl. Modifications involving turning on team attack and combining percents and stocks to determine ties were made for doubles.

Melee ruleset

  • 4 stocks
  • 8 minute time limit
  • Pause is set to “Off”.
  • Items are set to “Off” and “None”
  • Wobbling / Blizzobbling is legal.
  • Any action that can prevent the game from continuing (i.e., Ice Climbers' freeze glitch or Mewtwo's Soul Stunner., etc.) will result in a forfeit of that match for the player that initiated the action.
  • Modified Dave's Stupid Rule: No player can counterpick the stage he or she last won on unless agreed upon by both players.
  • The act of stalling is banned.
  • Controller mods of any kind (short hop mod, L-trigger mod, etc), except for cosmetic changes (paint job, different colored plastic), are banned. Those caught with a modded controller are disqualified without a refund.
  • Turbo or programmed buttons of any kind are banned.
  • In the event of a match going to Sudden Death, the winner will be determined by percentage. If the above is tied, a rematch will be held.

Brawl ruleset

GENESIS 2 used the Unity Ruleset for Brawl.

  • 3 Stocks
  • 8 minute time limit
  • Items are set to “Off” and “None”
  • All infinite’s and chain grabs are legal.
  • Meta Knight's Infinite Cape glitch and Extended Cape glitch are banned.
  • There is a ledge grab limit of 35 for Meta Knight and 50 for all other characters. If a game goes to time and one player goes over the ledge grab limit for their character, they will automatically lose the game. If both players exceed their ledge grab limit, then this rule is ignored.
  • The act of stalling is banned.
  • If time runs out, the winner of the match will be the one called out by the game. If it goes to Sudden Death, then it is determined by percentage. If the percentage and/or both players die at the same time as a result of a suicide move, a one stock 3 minute tie break match is held. Ledge grab limits are reduced to 13 for Meta Knight and 18 for all other characters.

Infraction system

GENESIS 2 followed the Unity infraction system. Mew2King received a red card for intentional underperformance in his pools set against Sade, following his yellow card for bracket manipulation at KTAR 5.
