Perfect Character

This is something I've been pushing for as main page material. Any support or criticism would be accepted. Cheezperson {talk}stuff 03:23, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Let's not go there. I think we've already established that poll and/or fanon changes to the main page are a bad idea. Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 03:29, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
But this has more value than a regular poll, or that Smash Arena thing. The polls were a good addition, but they generally did little to contribute to community. This could be important, it's good information. Cheezperson {talk}stuff 03:32, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
Whats goin on? Hey I noticed that the polls are gone. Why? You guys decided not to do um? Squallinoa 08 (talk) 03:34, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
Mainly because Cafinator, the guy who ran them, got blocked. I'm offering a replacement, more or less. This would be more valuable to the community. Cheezperson {talk}stuff 03:37, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Not to be an ass here, but what would really contribute to the community is fixing up all the fighter pages to the new and better format, finding all of the disbanded crews and marking them, cleaning up the Smasher namespace, etc. Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 03:52, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

I was talking about the smash community. Cheezperson {talk}stuff 03:54, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
So was I. Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 03:57, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
OK, well, how would this not help both this wiki community and the smash community as a whole? Cheezperson {talk}stuff 04:12, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
Mostly because it wouldn't have any actual impact on gameplay. Wishing that there was some character that could do something is not helpful to people. Seeing well documented writing on which characters can do what and how to do it is quite helpful. Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 05:11, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
Did you read the entire forum thread? Cheezperson {talk}stuff 05:13, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
Yeah. And I just read it again, and it made me even less supportive of this. Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 05:15, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
Oh, you're just saying that. The polls were on here for a while, and they worked just fine. In fact, this community (in general) liked them a lot. This would be like them, but more useful. If the polls were OK, then how come this isn't? Cheezperson {talk}stuff 05:18, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
SmashWiki is really useless to the Smash community (I could stop there, but I won't) if it focuses on things like polls rather than on building an encyclopedia. The Smash community already has multiple sites where people can do stuff like that, and it serves no purpose if this becomes another one of them. The Smash community does not, however, have an encyclopedia, which is why this thing was started in the first place. In so far as the SmashWiki community is concerned, I guess it doesn't matter if we're useful to the greater Smash community or not, but what the hell's the point of having SmashWiki only be of use to SmashWiki members? --Kirby King 20:54, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

I'd like to see the Smash Arena on the main page, it looks neat. - BattleFranky202 (talk) 12:57, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Doesn't the fact that the polls were removed obviously mean that they were not ok? --Shadowcrest 19:35, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
The only reason they're gone is that Cafinator was banned. I believe his ban ends today. Cheezperson {talk}stuff 23:38, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
That is not the only reason they were removed. They were usually irrelevant, possibly trollish, and generated limited response. In all, the cons far outweighed the pros for this one. Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 16:56, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

Does that mean there will be more polls? PikabroTALK 05:33, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Sort of. They'll be more meaningful polls with more useful data. Cheezperson {talk}stuff 05:35, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Cool. and by the way. I'll support anything that I can look forward to reading... PikabroTALK 05:37, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

I hope you skeptics know that that's support. The people want this. Cheezperson {talk}stuff 05:39, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
I hope you know that by "the people" you can only be referring to the four people who have expressed support on this page, and not any of the several people who have previously expressed (or presently express) opposition. (And bear in mind, this is after however many people were solicited on their talk pages to come here and support it. Also, in so far as you're prone to turn this into a "sysops vs. users" thing, we're people too. We never said you can't put that on the Main Page because the admins don't like it, we said you can't put it on the Main Page because you've never managed to get consensus to do it. As I've pointed out, you still haven't.) --Kirby King 20:54, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

I still have yet to see what this "meaningful information" that the "Perfect Character" or the "Smash Arena" things are supposed to provide is. Read my previous comments about the Perfect character thing. If you want a more detailed opposition, I'll write one this weekend. Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 16:56, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

I've told him to stop advertising (even I've got to admit, the degree of it was a bit uncalled for). I'm just saying that stuff like this needs advertising, and that's why we wanted something on the main page, they wouldn't work if only a few people knew about it. I realized yesterday that Smash Arena does, in fact, have a link to it on the main page, which is good enough for me. I apologize to Kirby King, and to anyone else who was offended when I implied that opposers (Bushism) weren't people. The only other thing I can say to that (and I know you've heard it a billion times before) is that, as subtle as it may be, the administration here is slightly elitist, and sometimes overbearing. Back to the main subject, the Smash Arena is now self-sustaining, so there should be no more advertisements. Perfect Character will start next week, hopefully under the same forum thread as Smash Arena (they don't deserve separate topics, in my opinion). Finally, on a more personal note, I feel that I am an excellent contributor to this already great wiki, and I will never do anything that will hurt the value of the website in any way, Scout's honor. If anyone has any comments, please don't say it here, say it on my page. That is all. Cheezperson {talk}stuff 22:39, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

I too enjoyed the polls, but I would have to agree that they have little encyclopedic prowess. Zixor (talk) 19:49, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

Editing articles to match modern information

I'm new, so don't pay this much heed if you want. However, I'd like to propose a simple project to go about and edit all pages with information pertaining to SSBB to eliminate some parts of the pages that still refer to information as speculation, now that the game is out and much of these statements could be either confirmed or removed. Just a thought on how to improve stuff. Zeruel21 (talk) 15:14, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

Hello, and welcome to SmashWiki! You should head over to the Watercooler, where we discuss SmashWiki as a whole and where we can discuss your point (which is very good). The Main Page talk is about edits specifically to the Main Page. Thanks for your help and I hope you enjoy contributing to SmashWiki! MaskedMarth (talk) 23:57, 1 November 2008 (UTC)

Featured media

Kperfekt had the rite idea for putting the video up on the main page, but it came out sloppy, which is prolly why it was reverted. There are two reasons that this media should be put up:

  • The Main page's left side is almost half the size of the right, making it look weird. :P
  • The media section can be used to show intros of the SSB games as well as gameplay of professional smashers.

I know how to edit main pages a little, so if I can put it up correctly, will it be allowed? Wikia does have the distinct connection with YouTube videos whereas one can alter it's size and position. This will benefit the wiki, IMO. Just give it some thought. Blue Ninjakoopa Talk to me 21:22, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

I know you mean well, so understand this isn't a flame. I think, however, that featuring videos and the like is not necessary, distracting and controversial. Kperfekt got rebanned partially because he was constantly readding it and getting under the admins' skin. I think it's unlikely to happen, but it's probably for the best. Miles (talk - contribs) 21:27, 7 November 2008 (UTC)
I see. But what about the symmetry? Can someone move some of the stuff from one side to the other to make it even? Blue Ninjakoopa Talk to me 21:31, 7 November 2008 (UTC)
Your monitor must be wider than mine; on my screen they're just about even. Some problems like this are inevitable. Miles (talk - contribs) 21:33, 7 November 2008 (UTC)
Do you have the advetisements turned on in your preferences? 'Cuz I just looked and saw that the main page would be moar even if the ad was removed. Blue Ninjakoopa Talk to me 21:40, 7 November 2008 (UTC)
No, they're off. You might want to try yours that way too... Miles (talk - contribs) 21:42, 7 November 2008 (UTC)
Done and done. :) Blue Ninjakoopa Talk to me 21:51, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

The main page isn't supposed to be perfectly symmetrical. Considering the left side contains prose writing while the right side contains bulleted lists, it actually makes sense for it not to be symmetrical. As for the media, it would serve no purpose whatsoever. All it would do is slow load times and take up space. I like the fact that all the content on the main page can be seen without scrolling down. This is something that all good wiki mainpages do. When we start adding random content to the main page, the whole thing gets messy and turns people off to our content. Also, there are some internet connections (even some high-speed ones) that periodically have trouble with videos. I've seen cases of videos from youtube causing the internet connection to go down and have to be reset. The risk and detriments to doing this far outweighs the reward here. Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 18:52, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

wasn't there a forum page that proved that different internet browsers view this page differently? Mine seems OK, but I can't speak for everyone else. Cheezperson {talk}stuff 23:58, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Geez.

Theres a reason this site is so slwo on loadnig. Although you guys are great with the information, you edit the User talk and User talk too much. Seriouslym the pages I saw were HUGE!Get bakc to editing the mainspace and less in User98.217.172.115

Im a contributor on various major wiki's and the reason the pages take a while to load is that you guys edit User:space WAYYYYYYYYY to much. I was planning on making an account, due to the massive cleanup i see. Template:Tt98.217.172.115
First of all, Sr. IP is valuable too. Don't disqualify his opinion because he's not registered.
Secondly, he's accurate. BNK's talk page (for example, there are many pages like this) has accumlated ~72kb in 6 days. That's freaking ridiculous. Something needs to be done to curb the extremely excessive talk pages here. --Shadowcrest 02:08, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

True ShadowCrest. BUT! It's like the IP is commanding us to stop talking on talk pages. Masterman What's the matter? Scared? 02:13, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

Somebody here (DefiantElements, if I recall correctly) mentioned we can't force users to edit in the main namespace; it's just as much the user's right to not edit as to edit. I do make it a matter of taste to avoid excessive user talk edits, and I'd encourage other users to keep their fingers in the main and project namespaces (we have a peculiar lack of back-end helpers; stuff like the SmashWiki:Character Project need work). MaskedMarth (t c) 03:41, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

Well techinically you can, under threat of ban or (i dont know if you guys know how to do this yet) taqking away ability to edit the talkspace. There are a lot of pages on smashers though....User:DCP User talk:DCP
I technically could, but that wouldn't be nice :) MaskedMarth (t c) 04:15, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
Wait, so you can take away a user's privilege to talk on a talk page without blocking them? I didn't know that! Cheezperson {talk}stuff 04:46, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
I can't do that, but I could threaten them with a block or inscribe it into policy. But that would be an abuse of power, and I'm not at all interested in doing so, anyways. MaskedMarth (t c) 04:52, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
Oh, I get it. Back to the issue, my opinion on talk page conversations is that they're a lost cause. Like you said, unless the administration gets especially bold and changes policy (in a move that I guarantee will enrage the majority of users here), talk page convos are sure to continue. Problem

Is there a way anyone could separate the Smasher articles from the regular ones? There's usually a 75% chance of me being directed to a smasher page whenever I click the "Random article" button. Koopa Koopersshell.gif Klaus 03:09, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

I think the issue here is that at some point in the near past that they somehow became normal article when they shouldn't be considered to be so. Let me check. --Sky (t · c · w) 03:13, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
Yes. That was the case. At Sky's request I've removed the smasher namespace from the list of content namespaces. -- JSharp (talk) <staff /> 05:50, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
Thank you all for helping. Now! Let the random editing begin! Koopa Koopersshell.gif Klaus 05:52, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

Crew Namespace

This problem is similar to the Smasher one previously encountered. Can some make a name space for crews, i.e. "Crew:The Koopa Bros." or something like that? I'm still doing some random editing and I'm finding alot of crew articles. Just a suggestion. Koopa Claus Happy Holidays 05:11, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

Wow, the wiki was discussing this exact topic the day I joined! Does anybody have an exact number of crew articles? Cheezperson {talk}stuff 05:18, 10 December 2008 (UTC)
I have no idea, but I think they're under a certain category. Koopa Claus Happy Holidays 05:21, 10 December 2008 (UTC)
If they're already under a category, why do we need this? And on a more personal note, I hope you've seen what GXD and KP think about your ideas. Cheezperson {talk}stuff 05:23, 10 December 2008 (UTC)
They didn't log on... did they? Koopa Claus Happy Holidays 05:23, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

Obvious, they're under CREWS! Some are also grouped by country. So, you want an entire namespace? Is there a rule for what qualifies as a namespace?  !!!!

We've already had this discussion in the forums. Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 05:30, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

Checked. The idea flopped then. The situation hasn't changed much. I'm guessing this proposal will flop as well. Cheezperson {talk}stuff 05:57, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

idea

I think we should have a quote of the day or something like that, maybe from internet memes?linkpwns. so does kirby! 20:55, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

Yes, like: Mario: It's-a me, Mario! and Kirby: Hiii! I'm Alex25, King of Randomness! Say Hi to me! Random stuff, Mah boi! 21:06, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

That's not gonna work out with the administration. Cheezperson {talk}stuff 21:40, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

Not only do I not see any reason for that to happen, it won't work. No one is going to edit it everyday, and it invites vandalism. Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 22:21, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

Frankly, I don't even like reading them on people's talk pages. Having one on the user page would be ridiculous. Toon Ganondorf (t c)

You can't change that, can you, Toon Ganondorf? Quote of the day/week is a great addition to userpages, as opposed to made up characters stolen from your so called "friends"... Blue NinjakoopaTalk 22:49, 15 January 2009 (UTC)
That was unnecessary.
I concur with CH and TG; not only are C. Hawk's points valid ones, but additionally a) The quotes would probably have nothing to do with smash, thus decreasing relevance and therefore purpose and b) memes are already used in virtually every sentence; we don't need this on the main page. --Shadowcrest 22:54, 15 January 2009 (UTC)
I wasn't saying that linkpwns' idea was good (in fact, I think he was trying to make a joke), I was just saying that QOTDs shouldn't be taken from userpages as Pictoquotes have been (sort of lol) Blue NinjakoopaTalk 22:57, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

New section for the main page to help people know what Super Smash Bros. is

Hi there all, sorry to bug you guys. I figure that the main page of Smash Wiki should have a section to explain to all those who don't know what the smash bros. series is. I was going to do it but I am not very good at adding these kinds of things on pages. I wrote the description for it.

Super Smash Brothers is a series of video games that was created by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo. It is a crossover fighting game that features mostly famous Nintendo video game characters like Mario, Link, and Pikachu and most recently included third party characters Sonic and Snake. The goal of the games is to blast your opponet off the stage by damaging him or her. It is consider one of the best video game series for Nintendo systems. It currently has three video games in the series: Super Smash Bros., which started it all that came out for the N64; Super Smash Bros. Melee was for the GameCube; and Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which was for the Wii.

They could of just be curious what it is and not know what it is. Also people could of gotten to this site by searching for a character on this website like mario or link and know nothing what Smash bros. is (unlikely but there are still those people). That is why

Egyptianwhiteboy (talk) 19:15, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

There is some space that needs filling.. But i like the idea. We could just put some genaral info in from above... Just to make it look a bit better. If there's a vote, I'm on the support side. But im not in on the arguament. You two decide. ~Teh Blue Blur~A revolution begins. 19:25, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

It isn't an argument Teh Blue Blur, Clarinet Hawk was just asking a question and I was just answering it. I don't want it to become an argument and I highly doubt that Hawk does too.Egyptianwhiteboy (talk) 20:02, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
The phrase "Super Smash Bros." in the phrase "Welcome to SmashWiki, the Super Smash Bros. wiki that anyone can edit." already links to Super Smash Bros. (universe). More would be redundant. Miles (talk) 21:58, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

So...

Any Sysops out there cool with changing the featured "other wiki's" out there to things more "Nintendo Related"? Kperfekt BURN!!! Revert That! 11:58, 14 February 2009 (UTC)

That's not something we can do. That comes from central Wikia and is all part of their advertising. We cannot change things that would obscure or remove advertising, and let's face it, we need the money from the advertisers to keep the servers running. Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 16:33, 14 February 2009 (UTC)
Are you talking about the wikia spotlight things Kperfekt or are you talking about the Related Communities widget? If it's the spotlight, we can't do anything... if it's the related communites, we can. --Shadowcrest 16:48, 14 February 2009 (UTC)

Stage Origins

I've been trying to get every stage in the Smash Bros. series to have a "Stage Origin" section to show where the stage came from and kinda the history of the stage. All is explained at the Brawl forum under "Stage Origin". If you went there you can see that only a few people are wanting to help. I think it's not that some people don't want to help, it's that they might not know that I need help. What I mean is that old or new forums are coming up to where the Stage Origin forum is going down the page and being less noticed. I put this on the Main Page's talk so that the project doesn't become less noticeable. Does anybody want to help on my Stage Origin project? Leave a comment below. Hmmm. It's been 15 days, or half a month like was stated above. I'll get you a new one pronto. Miles (talk) 16:20, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

So Delfino Plaza's been featured. However, suggestions help. Miles (talk) 16:29, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

There's a stupid ad that blocks part of the small list of categories. Any ideas to fix that? supercoolguy147 00:53, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

Can you take a screenshot and upload it so we know what we're dealing with please? --Shadowcrest 21:02, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
This is the image of the front page. supercoolguy147 23:54, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

Note that ad on the right blocking part of the page.

I get the same problem. Miles (talk) 00:00, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

Problem solved. SD706/FnW - (UTC ) 07:21, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
Not really..... superior as FF is, we still can't expect everyone to use it.
According to uberfuzzy, it's not that the ad is going on top of the content, it's that the content is going behind the ad. The ad isn't going to move, so we have to redesign the main page to fit around it :/ --Shadowcrest 19:01, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
Why is the ad there anyways? Other wikis don't have it there. supercoolguy147 12:41, 2 May 2009 (UTC)
This a "larger" wiki then some of the smaller ones, although there are several others that are larger than this one. I'd go with he fact that since this is larger, we get more ads, more views, more money for wikia.Smoreking(T) (c) 23:32, 11 May 2009 (UTC)
GuildWiki, one of the top 10 wikis in terms of size/page views (can't remember which), has no ad there. Anyway, I asked Sky to take a look at it- I can re-mention it to him when I see him next. --Shadowcrest 00:30, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

Affiliation

Love the Wiki. I'm sure it's been around for quite some time now, and I have great respect for it. My name is Jack Harvest, and I am the founder of Team MeowMix, a texture hacking team for Super Smash Brothers Brawl. You can see some of our work at http://teammeowmix.co.cc -- but that's not my point.

MANY texture hacking teams have come together, and are working on a collaborative effort known as the BrawlHacks Wiki. (http://brawlhacks.wikia.com) This Wiki will eventually contain every texture artisan's work, and will be available for download here. We ask that (since after checking it out, you're probably going to be interested) help be given in any way possible. We would love to become an affiliate with SSB's Wiki, and continue to lean on one another for help in this huge project.

Thanks for your time. Let me know where you would like the "Link" (pun?) to super-smash-bros.wikia.com to be on the BrawlHacks Wiki.

What happened to the skin here?

Seriously. what happened? SCG 147 18:12, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

I've just reported it to Wikia, so the problem should be sorted soon. PenguinofDeath 18:29, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
It's working fine for me, and I've set the default for this wiki to Monaco Beach. Miles (talk) 21:52, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, I think it just got fixed. PenguinofDeath 22:01, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

Caching images?

I've uploaded new version of Smash Bros. logo image yesterday. And now, only sizes, which weren't cached are displaying new version. Compare this:

Seriously, wtf, how long it can take to cache image? Dzamper (talk) 10:34, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

Regenerating speed depends on how often the image is used, I believe. The more an image is used the longer it takes to regenerate it. But why exactly did you fill in the logo? (That's what you did, right?) Now it doesn't look right against any non-white background. Toomai Glittershine Toomai.png The Stats Guy 10:59, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
No, the version on the left is mine. The white background is the reason I've decided to make new version without it. Dzamper (talk) 11:31, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
Whoah, it finally cached 120px thumbnail at version history of file properly... Pretty fast... Dzamper (talk) 13:11, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
Wow, now it's solved. 44 hours, pretty fast if you ask :> Dzamper (talk) 13:53, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

To look like other wikis?

Shouldn't there be a link to stubs and cleanup pages from the front page and say to help out? I see it in just about every other game wiki...and maybe some kind of poll would be good as well? HavocReaper48 (talk) 23:33, October 29, 2009 (UTC)

No polls. Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 01:25, October 30, 2009 (UTC)

Featured article

The featured article has been there for months. Can we please have a new one? 98.117.158.220 02:17, November 21, 2009 (UTC)

Suggestion? Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 05:20, November 21, 2009 (UTC)
Check the FA suggestions page. I suggested one a while ago which never happened. ☆The Solar Dragon (talk)☆ 07:08, November 21, 2009 (UTC)

Links

Where did the links to other wikis go?98.117.158.220 19:55, November 27, 2009 (UTC)

I'm new but . . .

why aren't teh featured imagez of teh karatcrez smash broz pixtrz!! Anyway, the pictures of some characters, like Mario, have different pictures from different games!? I think that it would be much better of the wiki to actually include the Smash Brothers picture as the main picture and the other picture in a gallery or something! After all this is the Smash brothers wikia!!!--Dark Falkner (talk) 22:03, January 14, 2010 (UTC)

What are you talking about? Shadowcrest 22:06, January 14, 2010 (UTC)
If you're talking about pages such as Mario, then your being new is the source of your irritation. Pages like Mario are for the character in general, and as such focus on things fom their originating series. Pages like Mario (SSB), Mario (SSBM), and Mario (SSBB) are for the character's appearence in the Smash Bros. series, and basically ignore stuff from the originating series. Full protection

A non-admin user just vandalized the page. I thought it was on ful protection?! 98.117.158.220 01:10, January 15, 2010 (UTC)

It should be imo. Miles (talk) 02:21, January 15, 2010 (UTC)
Agreed tbh. Shadowcrest 02:41, January 15, 2010 (UTC)
Massive no. The Main Page has been vandalized a total of once within the past month, so I see no reason as to why we should fully protect the page for one-time vandalism. RAN1 03:21, January 15, 2010 (UTC)
In previous experiences for me, we never protect the main page for one singular vandal attack. If consecutively vandalised by more than one person then yes. But otherwise, no. How often is it vandalised? About as frequently as any other article I would say, and less frequently than some. So, why not protect those too? There is no need for protection. ☆The Solar Dragon (Talk)☆ 16:12, January 15, 2010 (UTC)
