The Skill parameter has been removed from Smasher infoboxes, and in its place are the new "Best historical ranking" and "Best tournament result" parameters. SmashWiki needs help adding these new parameters to Smasher infoboxes, refer to the guidelines here for what should be included in these new parameters. |
When adding results to Smasher pages, include each tournament's entrant number in addition to the player's placement, and use the {{Trn}} template with the matching game specified. Please also fix old results on Smasher pages that do not abide to this standard. Refer to our Smasher article guidelines to see how results tables should be formatted. |

—"Today's Fighter" Super Smash Blog description |
Sonic (ソニック, Sonic) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. He was confirmed as a playable character on June 12th, 2018.
Changes from Super Smash Bros. 4
Aesthetics
As with all veterans returning from SSB4, Sonic's model features a more subdued color scheme. His fur is now lightly detailed, similar to other furred characters.
Like most of the cast, Sonic is more expressive, as he now grins while dashing and now has an angry look when using up tilt and holding his shield.
Sonic now grins during his running victory pose instead of smirking, like in Brawl.
Attributes
Like all characters, Sonic's jumpsquat animation now takes 3 frames to complete.
Ground Attacks
Neutral attack's third hit has a slightly different animation.
Down tilt launches at a more upward angle, improving its combo potential.
Sonic's previous dash attack, which resembled the Spin Attack from his games, has been changed into a lunge kick.
Aerial Attacks
Neutral aerial deals more damage (12% → 12.5%).
Up aerial connects into each hit less reliably.
Back aerial deals more damage (14% → 16%).
Forward aerial, up aerial, back aerial and down aerial have significantly lower landing lag.
Throws/other attacks
Forward throw now sends opponents at a more horizontal angle.
Up throw and forward throw deal less knockback.
Down throw deals more damage (7% → 10%).
Special Moves
Homing Attack now shows a reticle on the opponent right before Sonic is about to strike. The reticle's design is taken from the modern Sonic games post-Sonic Colors.
Homing Attack can be charged with Sonic ascending much higher than before. The attack deals more damage when charged (12% → 15%) and gets improved accuracy.
Homing Attack comes out much quicker than the previous titles when the attack button is pressed.
Spin Dash's charge can no longer be canceled by pressing shield. It also now stops upon hitting an opponent's shield, reducing its safety.
Spring Jump has more ending lag, preventing it from chaining into aerial attacks as easily.
Sonic's Spin Charge now changes the color of the trail to indicate charge strength, going from blue, to cyan, to yellow.
Sonic's Final Smash has been changed. He still transforms into Super Sonic and launches foes on contact, and his speed has been drastically increased. However, he now moves automatically on the horizontal axis, so only his vertical position can be controlled.

Trivia
- Sonic's default head icon in Ultimate bears a striking resemblance to several logos and icons in the Sonic series, namely:
- The logo for Sonic Team.
- Sonic's character icon in some Sonic spin-off games.
- The life icon and 1-ups in Sonic Unleashed (when Sonic is not in his Werehog form), as well as the 1-ups from Sonic Colors.
- It is also one of four to show the character's eyes, the others being Kirby, Meta Knight, and R.O.B..
