There are serious issues with The Big House 6 results page that I'll have to escalate to your ssbwiki superiors if they aren't resolved. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Juggleguy (talkcontribs) 17:58, 13 October 2016‎ (EST)

I'm already on your talk page explaining the situation to you, so I can assure you that's not necessary. Disaster Flare DisasterFlareHalloweenSigImage.png (talk) 14:00, 13 October 2016 (EDT)

Focus

He's the best Luigi in Georgia, but I don't really know how to source that. Is being the best character in your state enough to qualify as a notable player? His best result is at FP6 —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ovenbakedsemwitch (talkcontribs) 20:48, 15 October 2016‎ (EST)

Firstly, please remember to sign your comments (you can see an instruction how near the top of the screen when you edit a talk page). Secondly, claiming they're the best in a state will not do much without evidence, which is why smasher articles are a thing when it comes to notable players sections. The only evidence you can really give in this case are if he's got a good rank on a Power Rank or having good results in general. Two results aren't going to cut it, in my opinion. You can find more info on that and more here. Disaster Flare DisasterFlareHalloweenSigImage.png (talk) 16:52, 15 October 2016 (EDT)
Sry! Still learning the ropes. So looking at that notability guide, would I technically qualify? I lead the greater boston arena, which organizes tournaments for different games in eastern mass and nh.--Ovenbakedsemwitch (talk) 17:11, 15 October 2016 (EDT)
Not really sure, to be honest.... XD I don't follow the competitive scene all that much, so I can really only explain the basics of notability. I'd recommend talking to someone like this guy for questions like that. Disaster Flare DisasterFlareHalloweenSigImage.png (talk) 17:44, 15 October 2016 (EDT)

Getting people to talk on a talk page

(first of all, is it even okay to go into an admin's talk page to chat about deletions? I don't know much about wikis but usually this is done in the deletion site itself)

So... how do i do that?

Look, yeah, i definitely just assumed and ran with it. Not the best ettiquette, but it was the only way i thought of that could draw some sort of attention. Besides, it's not like it's hard to delete again.

Do realize that i'm entirely new to this, and as such i understand y'all have your own methods of settling new precedents. I posted that in the talk page because indeed i was trying to either kickstart some discussion, or, in the case you guys were already discussing and i just missed things, to get up to date on how it went. My apologies if recreating a page makes me come across as a wiki vandal.

As far as i'm aware, my solution, that is, creating its own page, is perfectly acceptable. Instead of deleting the page, why not keep it up until someone provides an argument as to why it should be deleted (preferably in the TBH6 talk page)? I understand this is a new situation to the wiki, but if no one wants to discuss it, then why not leave it up for the people who actually want to contribute, like myself? That sounds a lot more preferable than the "limbo" state things are right now, wouldn't you say?

Pmcommenting (talk) 21:35, 15 October 2016 (EDT)

A few things
  1. Yes, it is always acceptable to talk to an admin about anything, that's what we are here for :)
  2. Creating a page again after an admin deleted it without a reason other than assuming that we are ok with it is not ok.
  3. In order for the PM@TBH2 page to exist, there must be a consensus for it, and it should probably be on the page's talk (which you can create here). If you don't get anyone responding at first, wait for more users to get on (you can check that on the recent changes), then bump the page (just type "bump. ~~~~" on the talk page and maybe put something like "we need a consensus on whether or not this should exist") in the edit summary.
  4. We have an argument: There has never been an article dedicated for a PM (or any game for that matter) side event.
  5. And maybe this is something to bring up on the PM@TBH2 talk, but the "2" suggests that there was one of these prior? Maybe instead of making a page for the second one, we make one for the whole series. That I would actually find acceptable. Serpent SKSigHalloween.png King 21:56, 15 October 2016 (EDT)

The glitch I discovered with Jigglypuff

Somebody else on SmashBoards noticed my glitch [1]

Besides, wouldn't making a new page on this make others try this glitch out for themselves?

Bowser vs Bowser Jr. (talk)

That's...not quite how SmashWiki works. If we were to make a glitch article under the grounds that "it'll make others want to try it out for themselves", the wiki would be overstuffed with pointless glitches that nobody's gonna care about. There are plenty of other websites for things like that and we don't need to document every single little thing. On top of that, we try to keep glitch articles to only the most notable ones, as in the ones that have received the most attention, such as the Master Hand glitch or the Puff Up glitch.
Also, I just wanna point out that you're not signing your comments properly, as they need both your username and the date and time of when that comment was made. Disaster Flare DisasterFlareHalloweenSigImage.png (talk) 21:28, 19 October 2016 (EDT)

Mario Kart Switch

All those characters I put in were actually in Mario Kart 8. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.60.226.20 (talkcontribs) 17:36, 22 October 2016‎ (EST)

Please sign your comments (see the above when editing talk pages for instructions). Just because it looks like MK8 doesn't mean it is. Even if it's a rerelease, there could still be differences in available characters so we shouldn't just assume which characters are playable and which ones aren't until we get more info. Sock puppets?

Firstly, I should say that I didn't know this was against the rules, and contrary to what you may believe, I do respect rules that aren't illogical. However, I do have a reason for doing this. I had very briefly forgotten my password to my current account, so I created the other one. There's really nothing more to it. I don't intend on using the other account because I had found the password to this account a few days after forgetting it. But I'm just letting you know that there was no malice intended. Piledrivaaa (talk) 21:21, 25 October 2016 (EDT)

That's one possibility I did expect, considering you only used it that one day and never used it since. Since it's still a sockpuppet however and since you don't use it anymore, I will keep it blocked, though if you want, you can speak to Toomai and he can merge that account with your main one so that way all of your edits are in one place. Disaster Flare DisasterFlareHalloweenSigImage.png (talk) 21:23, 25 October 2016 (EDT)
That doesn't seem necessary. I only made a couple of edits on there, and like I said, I don't intend on using it. You can keep it blocked if you want, or delete it. Up to you. Sorry for the trouble, definitely won't happen again. Piledrivaaa (talk) 21:30, 25 October 2016 (EDT)

About your recent block

I'm not any special user on this wiki, but I'd also just like you to know the user that you blocked, 77.165.115.192, also had a strange username as for it has no letters, but still, thank you for helping keep smashwiki clean! :) --Drybones345(Smash) (talk) 13:22, 26 October 2016 (EDT)

Well that's actually an IP, since we allow IPs to edit on SmashWiki. XD If it weren't an IP and it was a username, that'd definitely be against the rules as per our username policy, since it'd be extremely confusing. Deletion of Smasher Page

I created a smasher page as are some other smashers in SC which included a picture, playing style, results in tournaments, mains, you name it. However, it seems to have gotten deleted unfortunately. I'm not sure why but would love to know if I did something incorrectly and how I could fix it. Thanks again. Mellow (talk) 00:08, 2 January 2017 (EST)

Firstly, new talk page subjects go at the bottom, not the top. Second, yes, I will agree that they did include them, but it doesn't boil down to just that. That's only scratching the surface and if we let that slide, then any Average Joe with a couple of results can create a smasher article. As per SW:NOTABLE, "Has participated in or organized an offline tournament that is run by standard tournament rules or a reasonably similar variant, and has some level of regional or national recognition." This means that you must have tournament results from regionals or nationals, and they must be a decently high placing as well. Even just one regional/national result can suffice provided it's a pretty high placing. As far as I could tell, most, if not all of your tournament results are only locals, and local-only smasher articles are typically deleted on the spot. Alternatively, if you're placed in a notable Power Ranking, you can bypass the tournament result requirement through that, but as far as I could tell, you match neither of those requirements at this time. Hope this helps. Disaster Flare Disaster Flare signature image.png (talk) 00:15, 2 January 2017 (EST)
Ah I was not aware and I see the reasoning behind the deletion and do not fault you for it. I'll keep the info on my uuser page and transfer it over to a smasher page once I've attended my first national or finally gotten on SC's PR. Expect me back soon fellow smasher! P.S thanks for replying back so soon!

Colors on pages with character sprites

(Regarding your re-edits to 2016 SSBMRank)

Is it specifically against the rules or something to specify what color the player tends to use? Is it because it's unsourced? Why go out of your way to remove such information? Lovedelic (talk) 21:50, 8 January 2017 (EST)

As far as I'm aware, it's generally been an unwritten rule to not cover what colors they used. Who started that trend and why, I'm unable to tell you, but it's been something that's been going on for at least a couple years now. Disaster Flare Disaster Flare signature image.png (talk) 21:56, 8 January 2017 (EST)
General reasons include: players changing colors and/or not using a single color reliably, ease of reading (e.g. all Mario mains' icons should be visibly similar), and difficulty in citation. Miles (talk) 22:12, 8 January 2017 (EST)
Huh, so those were the reasons? Seems reasonable enough to me. Disaster Flare Disaster Flare signature image.png (talk) 22:13, 8 January 2017 (EST)
So, for example, on the page Smash Conference LXIX, (although I did have to assume they used the same palette swap for the entire tournament, since I could only see streamed matches), would my edits be unacceptable? I've watched many tourneys and play in them occasionally and I've never seen a player who makes it far in bracket to switch colors mid tourney. I also don't really understand the "ease of reading" point but I'm not trying to argue with the policy Lovedelic (talk) 23:10, 8 January 2017 (EST)
Yeah, I think it's too visually distracting. I don't think it's a particularly worthwhile inclusion to specify the color, and the disadvantages are more significant. For example, it's harder to see at a glance how many Diddy Kongs were in top 16 since they're not only different colors from each other, but from Diddy's default. Another point I forgot to mention is that it's impossible to verify the colors on a lot of older tournaments where there isn't tons of video footage like there is these days, so it's a question of consistency across tournament pages as well. Miles (talk) 23:15, 8 January 2017 (EST)

Redirects

I think we should keep the redirects, it's mainly for convenience, as many people will just type in mario ssb4 etc. Alex Parpotta (talk) 16:44, 13 January 2017 (EST)

First, please remember to sign your comments. Second, see your talk page. I've already explained why they're unnecessary there. To add to it, if you search for just "robin ssb4" or something, literally the first suggested result that pops up will be its proper page, which makes the redirects seem even more pointless. Disaster Flare Disaster Flare signature image.png (talk) 16:41, 13 January 2017 (EST)
I know but it is noticably faster if it just redirects you there. Remember that random people who play the game will also use the site and not think to type in things like Mario (SSB4). Also for a few of them the top results are some of their moves rather than the main page. But if you really think it's unnecessary then I'm okay with that, i just think it's a good idea, that's all. Alex Parpotta (talk) 16:44, 13 January 2017 (EST)

Formatting Question

Okay, so I've run into kind of a problem with formatting, and that problem is Rosalina & Luma. There is a separate template for Rosalina's moveset (MvSubNavRosalina), and I just made a different template for Luma's moveset (MvSubNavLuma). But the problem that just occurred to me is that neither of these would link to the main page for Rosalina & Luma, so the information wouldn't be easily accessible. Should I make a new template for Rosalina & Luma and have you delete the other two templates? Or should I just continue making the two as separate characters? CpnFlacon (talk) 14:28, 14 January 2017 (EST)

Yeah go ahead and make one to merge them both, since they're part of the same character. I'll delete tge other templates when I can get on a computer later. Disaster Flare Disaster Flare signature image.png (talk) 14:34, 14 January 2017 (EST)
Okay thanks. I'll go ahead and create {{MvSubNavRosalina&Luma}}. CpnFlacon (talk) 14:39, 14 January 2017 (EST)

Okay so Toomai says I should start including the {{technical data}} tag on all the moves, so I'm going to start doing that. CpnFlacon (talk) 14:30, 16 January 2017 (EST)

I was hoping we wouldn't need to because the things to do bar is already getting pretty hefty as is, but alrighty. My biggest concern is the fact of whether or not anyone will ever take care of this stuff, but that's a question for another day. Disaster Flare Disaster Flare signature image.png (talk) 14:36, 16 January 2017 (EST)
As was I for that very same reason. I am also concerned about it ever getting done. I can certainly take care of the hitbox gifs if you can find source where I can find them, but the descriptions and frame data are going to have to be someone else. We should seriously revisit the idea we discussed on my talk page earlier. I think it would be a good idea for the wiki. Miles' suggestion wasn't a bad one, either. Re: Corrin's gender

Your argument that we should go with the default is valid, but I don't think we should stringently enforce that rule. After all, the FE wiki does not do this: https://fireemblemwiki.org/wiki/Corrin. Neither did Kurogane Hammmer: http://kuroganehammer.com/Smash4/Corrin. Nor Nintendo: https://youtu.be/Eq1Xzycyp2E?t=1107. It's absolutely unconventional, but I think it would be a good look for the website if we used Female Corrin as the default, especially since it contrasts nicely with the Male Robin writeup. It's not even just about popularity either; pretty much everyone defaults to Corrin as a girl. Commentators do this, Corrin mains do this, etc. Also I added new content, and I would hate to see it go to waste. FlamesofRevolution (talk) 11:39, 23 January 2017 (EST)FlamesofRevolution

First off, new posts go on the bottom, not the top. Second:
After all, the FE wiki does not do this
The Fire Emblem wiki does not follow this rule because in terms of the game itself, one gender isn't held over the other (additionally, the female is not the specific one chosen. It's under a randomizing timer that switches between male and female, rendering this argument null).
Neither did Kurogane Hammmer
That's simply because, while it is a source of information, it was not intended by any means to be professional. It's intended as a game fan's frame data repository. You can also see this is the case because Lucas is labelled as "Ridley" on the site, Bayonetta's picture is replaced with one of Sakurai, and Corrin's picture is an Arceus.
Nor Nintendo
They just use female Corrin in marketing because it sells. Put yourself in the shoes of someone working in a big company. You're definitely more likely than not to use the characters that sells, whether they're officially accepted or not. I would also leave Nintendo out of this too because we are not an official wiki. Therefore, we will not always do it Nintendo's way.
Now, I'm not sure why this was agreed upon, but it was decided back when SSB4 first came out that all characters with multi-gender costumes must be referred to by their default gender, so it doesn't matter to us if everyone's defaulting to female Corrin. If you have a problem with that, I'd say your best course of action is to go to Corrin's talk page and try to put a change to a vote. I do appreciate the fact that you actually signed, though. It's not often I see a new user who can actually figure that out first try. Disaster Flare Disaster Flare signature image.png (talk) 11:54, 23 January 2017 (EST)
With all due respect, I think you're missing my point. I wasn't trying to say that we should change the writeup because of the examples I listed (though I honestly had no idea that the fe wiki switched between, my bad). Rather, I used those examples to illustrate that "going with the default" isn't always the best idea or something that most people even do.
They just use female Corrin in marketing because it sells.
I am well aware of the appeal of using what sells, but that's not the only reason. Think about why it sells. Female Corrin is a refreshing contrast to the usual male FE lord. And I think we can tap into that by with the wiki (seeing as how the vast majority of smash are male). Sure, we don't make decisions based on popularity, but i'd argue that this isn't a popularity thing. It relates to the very culture of Smash; people like female Corrin more and largely see "Corrin" as the female character. I think the wiki should reflect these sentiments. We don't need to copy Nintendo (and I never implied we should) but I think they were onto something when they used Corrin as the default. And thanks. I really wanted you to take me seriously so I tried to follow all the rules (but I still screwed up, heh) FlamesofRevolution (talk) 12:30, 23 January 2017 (EST)
I'm not shooting down your opinion by any means, I'm just saying that's the rules that were set in stone. I really can't give you the go ahead for a change this big, whether I liked the idea or not. Like I said, if you are absolutely dead-set on making this change, the best way to go about it is going to Corrin's talk page and attempt to put it to a vote. I can't guarantee what the outcome will be, but I think more people involved could give a better idea of what the community wants.
