Ranai (らない), also known as Ganbaranai (がんばらない) or Hayase (はやせ), is a smasher from Japan who is mostly known for his Villager in SSB4, and is widely considered to be the best Villager in the world, with his most notable tournament placing being 3rd at GENESIS 3, surpassing many other Villager professionals such as MJG and SS. He is currently ranked 14th on the Panda Global Rankings and 2nd on the JAPAN Power Rankings.
In Brawl, he mained Pikachu, and occasionally Meta Knight and Snake.
Tournament history
Super Smash Bros. 4
Ranai's first notable tournament placing in SSB4 was at KSB 2015, a major tournament in Japan with custom moves on where he won with non-custom Villager. After losing early vs Choco's Zero Suit Samus, he made an impressive losers run in which he defeated players from the likes of Nietono, Brood, Earth and RAIN, and made it into Grand Finals where he defeated Komorikiri 4-0, which surprised many people.
Since KSB, he has placed very high at many other tournaments in Japan, which includes 1st placings in tournaments such as Sumabato 3, Umebura 18 and Hyper Sumabato. While he was not able to travel to the USA to attend EVO 2015, he would later attend Japan's first national tournament, Umebura F.A.T., at which despite getting a relatively disappointing 13th placing in bracket, he would help his team win the Japan vs World crew side event, where he defeated Ally and Nairo after his partner Umeki was eliminated. After Umebura F.A.T., however, he would resume his notable placings, getting 1st at both KUSF Tournament and Umebura Niconico Qualifiers.
In 2016, Ranai finally travelled to the USA to attend his third national tournament, GENESIS 3, where once again, he helped his crew win the regional crew battle side event, and he won the doubles event with Komorikiri. In singles, he made it to Top 8 and defeated FOW 3-1 in Winners Semis before facing ZeRo in Winners Finals, where he lost in a very close set, 3-2. He fell to Dabuz 3-1 in Losers Finals, ending his run and finishing in 3rd place. Despite this, Ranai did not resume his notable placings as well as before when he returned to Japan, as he ended up getting a 7th place (last place) at Niconico Tokaigi 2016. Ranai also traveled to USA a second time for Shots Fired 2, in which he got 9th place out of 162 entrants, in stark contrast to his previous 3rd placing at GENESIS 3.
Ranai would later take a hiatus from Smash, not attending tournaments for months; in spite of this, he traveled to the USA for a third time, this time to compete in EVO 2016, and defeated players like Nairo, Marss, and Dabuz before losing to VoiD to place 5th in the largest SSB4 tournament of all time, once again cementing his spot as the best Villager player in the world.
