The Poison Mushroom is slightly darker and sports a more menacing face than the Super Mushroom. The poison mushroom shrinks the character that touches it.

  • Lasts about 10 seconds.
  • Up B moves have longer reach excluding Mr. Game and Watch.
  • Hitboxes are much smaller.
  • The character becomes lighter, which increases knockback. (5/8 as light)
  • Thrown items do not go as far and deal less damage.
  • The character's sound effects and voice become higher pitched. This does not affect gameplay (aside from the chance of causing distracting laughter).

Players should learn to identify the slight differences in the two mushrooms. This becomes harder as the action is zoomed out.

Poison Mushrooms appear in the Japanese Version of Super Mario Bros. 2 (called Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels in the American version of the game Super Mario All-Stars). Looking very similar to the Super Mushroom, it acted as a Reverse Mushroom, shrinking Mario if he was big and killing him if he was small. When the game was remade in Super Mario All-Stars, the mushroom was given a much more obvious Purple design with a skull mark on it.
