Charizard (リザードン, Lizardon) returns as a playable fighter in Super Smash Bros. 4, revealed with Greninja in a trailer during the April 8th, 2014 Super Smash Bros. Direct. Unlike in Brawl, where it was used as one of Pokémon Trainer's Pokémon, it is now a stand-alone character. Charizard's skin appears to be a brighter orange and its proportions are more in-line with its recent three-dimensional appearances in the Pokémon franchise. For example, Charizard's fangs are smaller than they were in Brawl, which now makes them more proportional to their size in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y. Its voice actor, Shinichiro Miki, returns to voice Charizard in this installment, with new voice clips.
Changes from Brawl
Charizard appears to be buffed from Brawl, and the most significant change made to Charizard is that it is no longer part of the Pokémon Trainer, so it is now its own character.
Aesthetics
- Charizard now flaps its wings while dashing.
- Without Pokemon Trainer, all of Charizard's victory poses have changed.
Attributes
- Charizard is heavier.
- Type effectiveness no longer applies, thus removing Charizard's water weakness and grass resistance. While this is a buff overall due to no characters having grass attacks, the amount of water attacks is still minimal (as most of Greninja's water-based attacks are instead Slash), and unlike in Brawl, none of them are KO moves.
- Charizard, along with Pit and Meta Knight, can no longer glide.
Ground attacks
- Forward and down tilts deal less damage.
- Forward smash has a new animation and is stronger.
- Down smash has an altered animation.
Air attacks
- Charizard's new forward aerial, a claw slash, deals slightly less damage.
- Back aerial is stronger and has a new animation.
- Up aerial has a somewhat tweaked animation, with Charizard thrusting its head sideways instead of straight up.
- Down aerial is stronger, and deals 1% more damage. It has also been sped up a bit.
- Down aerial can now be sourspotted by hitting late, dealing less damage and weaker horizontal knockback.
Throws/other attacks
- Forward throw is slightly stronger.
- Back throw deals slightly more damage, has strengthened a little, and has slightly less ending lag, so it can combo into a forward air or dash attack more reliably at lower percentages.
- Charizard has a new up throw, where it brings its opponent into the air and crashes them into the ground, similarly to Kirby's up throw. Possibly based on Seismic Toss. The new up throw deals less damage but can combo into a neutral air or forward air on most characters under 45%.
- Down throw is slightly weaker (can only start KO'ing starting at 185%), though it's still Charizard's strongest throw.
Special moves
- With no need for Pokémon Change, Charizard has a new special move: Flare Blitz, which is a very powerful attack with recoil damage. It also gives Charizard a new horizontal recovery option.
- Fly grants much more vertical distance.
- Rock Smash is now Charizard's down special, replacing Pokémon Change.
- Charizard's new Final Smash involves Mega Evolving into Mega Charizard X.
