Splitting the article

We don't know how different the games will end up being but shouldn't the WiiU and 3DS versions be on differnt pages? If not can someone explain why? 109.148.248.236 05:38, 6 September 2013 (EDT)

It doesn't look like we will need to split them now because the games are similar and little information is known. We have sufficiently covered their differences with the section called "Console differences". However, a split is likely once the games are released and more information is known. Reggie

Please tell me, why do you wish to withhold this information Omega? And why are you taking it so personal to the point of swearing/cursing? It is possible to talk about this without resorting to that you know.

But seriously, its valid information that could indeed be true, so why withhold it? Even as a form of trivia, it seems interesting enough to mention. I mean after all, this wiki has an article dedicated to a fan game. Why is a page dedicated to a fan game, that has no backing from any nintendo official (as far as i know), yet information regarding a legit game stated by someone who actually works for the company isn't?

I'm not trying to be sarcastic here, I honestly want to know your reasoning behind this. In the event it's not true, it makes interesting trivia and it gives people something to talk about. If it is true, then at least the wiki could take pride in the fact it helped the cause by promoting the thing via providing a link to the petition in question for people to sign.

Wouldn't it be nice knowing a character got into the game because its one fans actually worked together to get? Don't you want the wiki to be part of that? Again, in the event it is legit.
Ixbran (talk) 23:37, 4 December 2013 (EST)

Fan games have no backing from Nintendo but are released into the public. They are playable. They are not "fake" or hoaxes. Petitions as ridiculous as adding Reggie to a Smash game are clearly hoaxes, and if anything, deserves to be on the List of Rumors page and not on the main Smash 4 page. Don't add it there until Omega Tyrant puts his comment here, however. --Timson622222 (talk) 23:40, 4 December 2013 (EST)
I dont see how it could be a Hoax, i mean has Reggie been known for that sort of thing? Yea he had joked about wanting to be in the game. But after he said that, he admitted to having been joking about it and moved on. So I believe if he had been joking this time, he would have followed up with an "I'm joking guys." like last time.

I like to think it's the fans wish for him to actually be in the game that made Sakurai consider it. Wouldn't it be interesting if this was indeed true? It would be nice knowing that a character got into smash because it's something fans wanted, and worked together to get.
Ixbran (talk) 23:45, 4 December 2013 (EST)
"Please tell me, why do you wish to withhold this information?"
Because it's not legitimate information?
"And why are you taking it so personal to the point of swearing/cursing?"
"Swearing" does not mean someone is taking something "personally".
"But seriously, its valid information that could indeed be true, so why withhold it?"
Notice the bolded words, if we're adding information that "could be true", then when we are gearing right into speculation (though this goes beyond speculation as I'll get too shortly).
"Even as a form of trivia, it seems interesting enough to mention. I mean after all, this wiki has an article dedicated to a fan game. Why is a page dedicated to a fan game, that has no backing from any nintendo official (as far as i know), yet information regarding a legit game stated by someone who actually works for the company isn't?"
This is completely irrelevant. "Information" about a joke by a Nintendo employee and information about Brawl mods are two entirely different things, don't compare them. Additionally, a joke made by a Nintendo employee about being added to the game pre-development is not "interesting" trivia whatsoever, when it has absolutely no impact on the game.
"In the event it's not true, it makes interesting trivia and it gives people something to talk about."
That is completely irrelevant to the Wiki, we are here to report the facts, not "give people something to talk about".
"If it is true, then at least the wiki could take pride in the fact it helped the cause by promoting the thing via providing a link to the petition in question for people to sign."
Again completely irrelevant. We are an encyclopedia about Smash Bros., not a site to promote shit.
"Wouldn't it be nice knowing a character got into the game because its one fans actually worked together to get? Don't you want the wiki to be part of that?"
Please read what SmashWiki is not, we are not a fanon site that push for things to be in Smash. You seriously want Reggie in Smash? Take it elsewhere, don't use this Wiki to promote it.
"I dont see how it could be a Hoax, i mean has Reggie been known for that sort of thing?"
You seemingly aren't aware of the "My body is ready" meme, and why Reggie has the notoriety he does on the internet.
"So I believe if he had been joking this time, he would have followed up with an "I'm joking guys." like last time."
You're not familiar with the basis of humor are you? See, here's the thing, when people joke around, they don't flat out say it's a joke, as it otherwise ruins the joke. The fact he claims his final smash would be "MY BODY IS READY SLAM" should be quite clear he's entertaining the fanbase and is not at all being serious. Do I really need to fully explain the joke to you?
"I like to think it's the fans wish for him to actually be in the game that made Sakurai consider it. Wouldn't it be interesting if this was indeed true? It would be nice knowing that a character got into smash because it's something fans wanted, and worked together to get."
See what I said earlier about this, we're not going to start speculating on shit because fans "wish for it".
TLDR: It's an obvious joke made by a guy known for his entertaining antics, thus we will not cover it as if it's factual information about Smash 4 content. Also knock it off with the "it could be" and "wouldn't it be nice if X happened?" when they have no basis whatsoever for determining what information goes on the Wiki. Omega Tyrant   00:11, 5 December 2013 (EST)
the fact your so dead set on stating it is a joke and nothing more, without even considering the possibility of it being true, is disappointing. I figured that when it comes to a game company that is known for surprises and /silly/ things, people would learn to stop taking everything so seriously. After all games are supposed to be fun, and providing information about them should be as well. But you're really sucking the fun out of things by getting all uppity about this. I guess we will just have to wait and see how things turn out then. If its not true, then that's perfectly fine and I'll admit I was wrong. But if it does turn out to be true, and the necessary signatures for the petition are met, then making Reggie's Smash.4 character page is something I will thoroughly enjoy doing.
Ixbran (talk) 00:22, 5 December 2013 (EST)
"the fact your so dead set on stating it is a joke and nothing more"
Because obvious joke is obvious? You're the only one who's taking the joke seriously.
"without even considering the possibility of it being true"
SmashWiki is not speculative
"I figured that when it comes to a game company that is known for surprises and /silly/ things, people would learn to stop taking everything so seriously."
Except you know, this is the Wiki mainspace, an online encyclopedia, where it is completely serious. Do you know what a Wiki is for? The forums and userspaces are for fun, not the mainspace.
"and providing information about them should be as well."
Except the "information" you're trying to add here isn't actual information at all, and read my prior sentence.
"But you're really sucking the fun out of things by getting all uppity about this."
Again, read What SmashWiki is not. We are an online encyclopedia, not a pseudo-news site that reports things because "they're fun". And don't complain about users here "being uppity", because they maintain the factual basis of the Wiki and don't let you use it to post pseudo-news about how a guy joked about being in Smash Bros.
"If its not true, then that's perfectly fine and I'll admit I was wrong. But if it does turn out to be true, and the necessary signatures for the petition are met, then making Reggie's Smash.4 character page is something I will thoroughly enjoy doing."
You want to complain that I'm "taking things too seriously", yet here you are taking a joke from a guy notorious for them completely serious, and getting emotional and whiny about it when others shut you down about it. Don't be a hypocrite. Omega Tyrant   00:42, 5 December 2013 (EST)

I'd just like to note here that Nintendo stated just this past week that, back when Operation Rainfall was the petition-of-the-day, while they did ultimately decide to do what the fans wanted, they flat-out ignored the petition in the final decision process. So I'd say the chances of Sakurai even considering one are just about zero. Toomai Glittershine   The Rainbow 10:11, 5 December 2013 (EST)

The Unidentified 3DS Stage is a DK Country Returns 3D Stage!

WHY WON'T ANYBODY ADMIT THAT THE UNIDENTIFIED 3DS STAGE IS A DK COUNTRY RETURNS 3D STAGE?! I JUST KNOW IT IS ONE! Luigi1234 (talk)

Firstly, you seem to have your caps lock stuck. It's the key to the left of "A", turn it off, as ALLCAPS is disruptive to talk page discussions as per SW:TALK. Secondly, there is no official source that it is a DK stage, so if you try to make this edit again, it'll just be reverted. Heck, [List of confirmed stages in Super Smash Bros. 4|this page] even has a clear note saying "do not claim that this is a DK stage". Scr7 (talk · contribs) 13:46, 23 December 2013 (EST)
"I just know it is one"
That is not good enough, as far as we see, the stage could be many different things at this point. Sure it could very well be a DK stage, but SmashWiki is not speculative, and we want official confirmation or else hard evidence that strongly supports it, before we go claiming it on the Wiki as fact that it's going to be a DK stage. Omega Tyrant   13:56, 23 December 2013 (EST)

I don't think it is. Sakurai says that the game HAS a story mode and another photo released of a similar looking stage was posted with that comment.

While I believe there probably will be a stage from Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, I don't believe this is it. The platforms in this stage look nothing like the platforms in DKCR. The only connection is that they both take place in a jungle, but even this is a stretch. None of the foliage have the characteristically cartoon-esch tropical palm trees in DKCR. Naw bro, the game also comes out September 1st, but sure, let's trust Amazon. After all, this obscure site chooses the same date, which is actually the safest day to bet on because by then, SSB4 has to be released rather than predicting the actual day of release earlier in the year. Also:

  • Reportedly, GameStop is expecting that Super Smash Bros. 4 Wii U and Nintendo 3DS release date may be set for April 8, 2014. The post on Examiner noted that this particular Super Smash Bros. 4 release date falls on a Tuesday. Usually, this is the day of the week when most of the new software items are released to retailers.
  • However, before this latest Super Smash Bros. 4 Wii U release date emerged, other potential schedules were already popping up online. For instance, the website, Newegg.com posted that Super Smash Bros. 4 Wii U release date might happen on December 31. Meanwhile, the launch of the Nintendo 3DS version was believed to come out on May 16, 2014.

Remove the "unidentified stage"

The stages section of this article is reserved for multiplayer stages, yes? Due to the size of the stage, lack of clear origin, and the fact that we've only seen one character inside it, it's obvious to me that the "unidentified stage" is part of the single-player mode, just like this area. It should also be taken out of the List of confirmed stages article, and we should provide details on what we know of the single-player mode on the article. Provided you all agree, that is. Toast  ltimatum 20:02, 13 February 2014 (EST)

Nothing proves that it is a single player stage. I think it's some other mode as well, but it could easily be a zoom of some New Pork City type of stage or something else. Because SmashWiki is not speculative, it stays. --72.53.134.85 16:14, 19 February 2014 (EST)

I'll also quickly point out that reveal order is pretty much meaningless, and people have to stop whinging about it. It's clear by now that Sakurai does it randomly or to promote the release of new games (and guess what, none of those characters had any new games lately they could promote (well there was Pokemon X/Y, but Jigglypuff is among the least relevant pokemon in it, so it made no sense to reveal her to "promote" X/Y)). Ixbran (talk) 01:04, 3 April 2014 (EDT)

  1. The page in question isn't hosted on the official site. Look at the domain: the main url features a .us, whereas the official site uses the standard .com
  2. If you go to site without all of the guff at the end of the URL (eg www.smashbros.us), you get an image with a link to another site still, which is a fanblog devoted to an attempt to revive Nintendo Power.
As such, this page does not warrant inclusion on this page, due to being non-notable and fanon.

As Stated before, it's their collective title, as otherwise, the page title would be un-necessarily long, we'll probably make separate pages for them once they're released (due to their many differences), but for now the page title should stay Super Smash Bros. 4. Ah, that makes sense. Thank you for the info. Tacopill (talk) 19:55, 10 June 2014 (EDT)
I'm going to go on record and say that I think the way the character section looks is stupid. It doesn't make any sense to me why you guys want to try to keep everything centered and then when something new comes out you wind up totally changing how it appears. In my personal opinion I think you should just let the characters stay side by side and if there are 3 blank squares in the last row at the end, then so be it, I've seen the layout change like 10 times since I joined this site, it's ridiculous.JohnnyWellens 14:52, 11 June 2014 (EDT)
It does have to be constantly changed yes, but at least we can make it look okay in the meantime. It's not like it takes much editing effort. Toomai Glittershine   The Prismatic 14:53, 11 June 2014 (EDT)
But that's the thing, it doesn't look okay. It looks like someone cares way too much about centering. Just fill up the boxes with side by side characters and leave it at that. My opinion of course. JohnnyWellens 14:59, 11 June 2014 (EDT)

Artworks

I wasn't entirely sure where to put this, but I decided this would work. Sorry if it doesn't.

The official website uses a background similar to Brawl's artwork has for each of the characters artworks. Should we add this? Nutta Butta (talk) 17:35, 11 June 2014 (EDT)

The character artworks themselves are transparent, with the page background gradient showing through. There's not really anything we can do about it, and I don't think there's any reason why we would. Toomai Glittershine   The Resolute 17:50, 11 June 2014 (EDT)

Swimming

I've seen how there appears to be no swimming on the Animal Crossing stage in SSB43D, but at the Best Buy Smash Fest, after the match, one of the many stats it lists is "swim time". Could it be that either swimming has yet to be programmed, or that the results screen may have copied assets from Brawl and they hadn't changed it yet? -- (The preceding signed comment was made by Ghabulous Ghoti) 12:49, 12 June 2014 (EDT)

It could also be that swimming has been disabled for the demo, or they're testing the game with swimming disabled to see how balance is affected. We can only really say that it doesn't appear in the demo, there's quite a lot of possible reasons why. Toomai Glittershine   The Producer 12:53, 12 June 2014 (EDT)

Edit

Why can't I edit the page?Smasher-Billy (talk) 07:24, 16 June 2014 (EDT)

The page is protected so that only certain users can edit it. This prevents unconstructive edits.Tepig (talk) 19:14, 20 June 2014 (EDT)
To specific, the page is semi-protected, so that IPs and user who haven't been autoconfirmed (i.e. new users) can't edit the page, to prevent the flood of excess speculative edits that would occur. Omega Tyrant   20:49, 20 June 2014 (EDT)

Character portrait shadows or not?

At the moment, some character artwork does not have a shadow in it, whereas others do. I assume this is because they have all been taken from a variety of sources. For the sake of being consistent, like squaring off all the images, I think they should all be the same (that is, they all have shadows or all lack shadows). Which is preferred? The latest press release has every character portrait at resolution of at least 3500 pixels both ways (when cropped), and no shadow, so uploading all of those would be the easiest way around, unless shadows are truly desired. In this case, character artwork that currently doesn't have a shadow should be updated. Krazy4Krash (talk) 11:05, 21 June 2014 (EDT)

I don't know why people started uploading shadowless versions from press kits (at unnecessary sizes), because it's a guarantee that the next time we get a reveal, we'll only have the shadowed version available. Toomai Glittershine   The Yellow 13:31, 21 June 2014 (EDT)

Popular names

I don't know if this has already been mentioned, but a couple names for this new.. generation I guess, (both games combined) that I have seen growing in popularity in my area and online are "Sm4sh" and "Super Smash Bros. Kerfuffle." those two should be added to the page somewhere, like either at the beginning or in a little section or something. I don't know how wiki's work lol, just trying to help out. -Khaz Khazarel (talk) 04:47, 23 June 2014 (EDT)

Links to show that "Kerfuffle" is a common name? I seen Sm4sh used a lot, but never seen "Kerfuffle". Omega Tyrant   05:31, 23 June 2014 (EDT)

Boxart Revealed

Should we swap out the collective logo for the Wii U and 3DS boxart? Lumastar (talk)   1:12, 24 June 2014 (EDT)

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U are the fourth and fifth games respectively.

Link

Sakurai: ...we're now going into versions four and five within the series—this is only something that's now possible.

Kotaku: When you say four and five, do you mean the 3DS and Wii U versions? Those are separate?

Sakurai: Yeah, exactly.

According to a Kotaku interview with Sakurai, he refers the games as the fourth and fifth games. So I think, like on Wikipedia, refer the games as the fourth and the fifth games (3DS and Wii U respectively). Yeah, it's old news, but I'm sure no one noticed that until now, but it's up to you guys, keep it up. --Flight (talk) 23:39, 29 June 2014 (EDT)

In this case, it would be like referring to Pokémon Green as Pokémon 1 and Pokémon Blue as Pokémon 2. Iteration wise, yes, the 3DS version would be the 4th and the Wii U version would be the fifth, if only because they were released at different times, but the community as a whole prefers referring to both games as just Super Smash Bros. 4, regardless of what Sakurai wants to number them. MegaTron1XD  23:47, 29 June 2014 (EDT)
Green and Blue are the same game with the only differences being version exclusive Pokémon; we already know these will be significantly more different than that. Really, it should come down to how different they end up being after the Wii U game is released. Until we know more, though, I'd agree that we should keep them as one. Steel Diver stage?

This new trailer for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS was launched recently, and aparently only a few people have catch a glance at it. At 1:05 you can get to see some submarines, suggesting a stage based on, presumably, Steel Diver, unless it is something else, I don't know... --Byllant (talk) 01:34, 3 July 2014 (EDT)

I think that was the trophy viewer. FirstaLasto 01:53, 3 July 2014 (EDT)
I'm inclined to agree with FirstaLasto here; it does resemble the trophy Diorama mode from Brawl. Unless we see characters standing on the subs, I'm not inclined to assume it's a stage. Miles (talk) 07:21, 3 July 2014 (EDT)
It looks a lot like a stage to me. I think it needs mentioned somewhere... Nutta Butta (talk) 11:38, 3 July 2014 (EDT)
