Trivia

  • The title of this event is almost identical to the phrase “the year is 20XX”, a term referring to an unspecified date in the 21st century well-known for its use in the introduction of many Mega Man games, which has become a meme among many gaming communities, including Super Smash Bros. Melee.
  • Eight and the female Pokémon Trainer were the only playable characters at the time who originated in the 2000s but were not present in the event, due to them being alternate costumes for the Luminary and the male Pokémon Trainer, respectively.
    • The Koopalings and Alph, however, can be selected as alternate costumes for Bowser Jr. and Olimar, which would break the theme as they debuted in the 1980s and 2010s respectively.
  • Living Room is the only stage from a 2000s game not present in the event. Although it is specifically based off of Nintendogs + Cats, released in 2011, the general concept first appeared in the original Nintendogs, released in 2005. This is opposed to Bringing Back the '80s using Palutena's Temple and Boxing Ring, and this event's Tomodachi Life, which debuted in earlier games but are based on more recent appearances.
  • Even though Battlefield can be played on in the event, Final Destination cannot. Though both stages first appeared in the first Super Smash Bros. (released in 1999) as single player stages, before becoming selectable in Melee (released in 2001), Battlefield's appearance in the first Super Smash Bros. could have been considered a different stage, as it was named Duel Zone originally.
  • This is the only decade-based event not to allow any downloadable characters to be used; if it were to be revisited, this would no longer be the case since Sora, who had not been released at the time of the event, is a character originated in the 2000s.
