Mario (マリオ, Mario) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. He was teased in a trailer released on March 8th, 2018 before being fully confirmed as playable on June 12th, 2018.
Changes from Super Smash Bros. 4
Mario now wears Cappy; though he does appear to throw him around in a circle in the trailer, he does not appear to use him in any attacks.
Aesthetics
- Although the primary aesthetic is nearly identical to the previous entry, Mario's overall appearance was given more detail, akin to Brawl while retaining the brighter colors of SSB4.
- Mario's standard cap has been replaced by Cappy from Super Mario Odyssey. As of now, the only known change this grants is an additional aesthetic during Super Jump Punch, where Cappy's eyes appear during the move.
- Mario seems to have two new taunts: one where he throws Cappy around in a circle, and another where he turns his back to the camera and gives a thumbs-up. They replace his up and side taunts from the past two games.
- Mario, like many other characters, has been made much more expressive in this game, to an even greater degree than its predecessor.
- Mario’s attacks, especially ones involving fire, have been given brighter, flashier particle effects.
- Mario's builder outfit from Super Mario Maker and his wedding tuxedo from Super Mario Odyssey are present as alternate costumes. They seem to have replaced his yellow Wario-inspired costume and his white Fire Mario costume, respectively.
- Mario's idle animation is altered slighty, as his head is turned more towards the screen.
- Mario's ledge hanging animation is different, he now hangs on with one hand instead of two.
Ground Attacks
- Mario has a new dash attack, with him performing a sliding kick.
- Dash attack deals more damage (8% to 9%).
- Neutral attack does more damage (8% to 9%) and knockback.
- Up tilt has more ending lag.
- Up smash has slightly less knockback.
Aerial Attacks
- Forward aerial has an altered animation, with Mario punching downwards without flipping.
- Down aerial's final hit has an altered animation involving Mario spreading his limbs out.
Throws/other attacks
- Pummel is faster.
- Pummel deals less damage (now dealing 1%).
- Down throw has altered knockback and a more horizontal angle, making it more difficult to perform combos.
Special Moves
- The animation of Mario hitting with the Cape is slightly altered.
- The coins from the Super Jump Punch now have the chance to be regional coins found in Super Mario Odyssey’s Metro Kingdom.
- Super Jump Punch requires a longer travel distance before being able to sweetspot a ledge.
- F.L.U.D.D has an altered charging animation.
