Meowth (ニャース, Nyarth) is a fictional creature in the Pokémon media franchise.

In Super Smash Bros.

Based on its prominent role in the Pokémon anime series, which was extremely popular at the time of the original Smash's release, a popular rumor claims Meowth was planned to be playable in the game along with Bowser, King Dedede, Mewtwo, and many other characters, before being cut for space/time constraints. However, unlike the aforementioned three characters, no definitive official source has ever been found that proves Meowth was ever planned to be included as a playable character.

Meowth can be summoned by a Poké Ball. It uses Pay Day as its attack: Meowth hovers in the place it was summoned, scattering coins in all directions. Any character caught in the radius of this attack will take damage. When the coins hit characters, they also make Mario-coin sounds. The attack radius of Pay Day is short so it can be easy to avoid, however fighters can become trapped in the barrage of coins taking up to 50% damage. Meowth can also deal significant damage with its body, which has much higher knockback scaling, so it may KO foes after they are hit with the coins. Meowth's attack does not harm the summoner.

Trophy information

Meowth returns in Super Smash Bros. Melee but not as a Poké Ball Pokémon. Instead, it has been relegated to a role as a trophy. Meowth's trophy is unlocked after getting the "Smash Blue" trophies (from the All-Star single-player mode) for all 26 playable characters.

Meowth's trophy is atypical in respect to other Pokémon trophies. Instead of describing its behaviour in the Pokémon series, the trophy instead references Meowth's Party, a technical demo designed to demonstrate the GameCube's graphics. Reflecting this, the trophy depicts Meowth holding the red and white guitar featured from the demo.

Meowth
This...is Meowth's dream. Meowth strides all over the globe scattering invitations to other Pokémon, insisting they come to "Meowth's Party". At this wonderful party, guests are packed in like sardines as Meowth climbs up the stage with its faithful guitar. It strikes a chord, pauses, and then rocks their world.

Meowth returns to its role as a Poké Ball Pokémon in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, using the same attack it used in Super Smash Bros., but in a slightly different fashion. This time, Meowth throws a barrage of coins left or right in the opponent's direction instead of quickly scattering coins in all directions, though it will turn to face the opponent that is closest to it. In addition, falling from above onto Meowth will cause the victim to be locked into the rush of coins and thus take heavy damage, allowing a maximum of approximate 300% if smash attacks are used on the trapped victim.

A Scratch Cat Pokémon. It's one of the most famous Pokémon and very fond of things that sparkle--the gold medallion on its head could be seen as an indicator of this infatuation. There are many Pokémon that resemble cats, but Meowth is the only one that can use Pay Day to receive coins at the end of battle. It evolves into Persian.

Meowth's trophy can be randomly obtained in both version of the game. In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U it is part of the Pokémon Trophy Box.

Meowth
North America Meowth is a Normal-type, Scratch Cat Pokémon who absolutely loves anything shiny. It's a creature of the night, and it's not unusual to discover a Meowth and a Murkrow fighting over their finds. Meowth's attack Pay Day can deal a ton of damage if an opponent gets caught in it. How purrfect!
