Jake, formerly known as JakeTheJew and abbreviated as JTJ, is a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Steve player from Florida who is considered to be one of the best Steve players in the United States. He came to prominence during the online era as a Wi-Fi Warrior, consistently placing 1st at large online weeklies, defeating players such as Maister, Scend, Sonix, Epic_Gabriel, Lui$, naitosharp, LeoN, and Sinji, and being ranked 25th on the Wi-Fi Warrior Rank v7. Following the return of offline competitive play, Jake brought the momentum with him and has since defeated players such as Light, Kola, Dabuz, Chag, Kome, Sonix, Gackt, and Riddles. He is currently ranked 2nd on the Central Florida Ultimate Power Rankings and 44th on the PGRU v3 NA.
Playstyle
Jake plays Steve in a style vastly different from many Steve players. While he still has to mine for resources and materials, he puts them to good use by setting up walls and blocks to make crafty, tricky, and unpredictable approaches. He frequently uses Steve's down air as an out of shield option and as a way to stall his landing to avoid punishment. Jake is also known for his use of TNT as a way to not only ledgetrap his opponent but to condition them to respect the explosive before he detonates it. Jake also plays semi-aggressively as he chooses to approach his opponent more than run away from them, utilizing Steve's unique approach tools, such as Minecart, for a surprise burst option, or back air and forward air to wall out his opponent. Jake is also notable for using Steve's diamond forward smash as a KO option or conditioning tool due to its high safety, so much so that fans have nicknamed Steve's diamond forward smash the "Jake Smash".
However, when Jake is put in disadvantage, he reveals predictable habits that make him prone to punishment. For example, his down aerials out of disadvantage are often called out by opponents awaiting his landing. In addition, he tends to use Minecart to escape from pressure, especially in the corner, enabling opponents to hit him out of it or to counterattack. This was most apparent in his set with Ned at InfinityCON Tally 2021, where most of his Minecarts have been punished by Sephiroth's Scintilla counter, frequently KOing him at early percentages. These habits have led to him being prone to comebacks or matchup knowledge by other top players, such as Cosmos, Kola, and Zomba. In addition, Jake often neglects Steve's expansive array of advanced techniques, often limiting the potency of his punish game.
