Changes from Super Smash Bros. 4

An icon used in notice templates. NOTE: SmashWiki is not speculative. Please refrain from adding detailed data values derived from pre-release gameplay footage, such as the E3 demo. Such data (damage values, launch trajectories, frame data, etc.) are subject to change before the official release.

Aesthetics

  • Change As with all veterans returning from SSB4, Lucas's model features a more subdued color scheme. Similar to Brawl, some of the detailing on his clothes and weapons are more prominent, such as the vertical stitching of his socks.
  • Change The Rope Snake's scales are more pronounced.
  • Change Like other characters, Lucas always faces the screen regardless of which direction he turns. This affects his movesets as well (such as the end of his up tilt), all of which appear to be mirrored.
  • Change Like Ness, Lucas makes a new face when hit, with his eyes growing somewhat larger and rounder.
  • Change PK-based attacks are now cyan instead of pink.
  • Change Like Ness, Lucas's victory theme is now the ending of "Eight Melodies" from both Mother / EarthBound Beginnings as well as "Eight Melodies" from EarthBound layered together.
  • Change Lucas now strikes a different pose during his Seven Needles victory animation.

Attributes

  • Buff Lucas is slightly faster overall. The global changes to initial dashes especially benefit his ground movement.
  • Buff Like all characters, Lucas's jumpsquat animation now takes three frames to complete.

Ground attacks

  • Buff Up smash has a larger hitbox and has an additional blue layer to visualise the hitbox's increased size.
    • Buff Up smash has less endlag and invincibility on startup.
  • Buff Down smash covers more range, making it easier to edgeguard opponents. In turn, this also makes each hit cover shield, as it did not in Smash 4.
    • Change Lucas' fingers are now more pronounced during his down smash, where he bends his elbow after each shot.

Aerial attacks

  • Buff Neutral aerial's hitbox is larger. The landing lag on the move has been reduced by one frame, allowing the move to combo into tilts and jab easily.
    • Change Neutral aerial's multihits have less hitlag, making the animation faster on hit.
    • Nerf Neutral aerial can send at more than one angle now, making it less consistent for combos in the air.
  • Buff Forward aerial has reduced landing lag.
  • Buff Back aerial's animation is faster.
    • Change Back aerial can now spike grounded opponents. While this is benefited by opponents' inability to tech grounded spikes, this takes away Lucas's ability to send grounded opponents offstage from behind him.
  • Buff Up aerial's hitbox is bigger and has slightly less start up and landing lag.
  • Buff Down aerial has reduced landing lag.
  • Nerf Grab aerial has decreased range.
    • Buff Grab aerial has more active frames.
    • Buff Grab aerial deals more damage on both the early and late hits.

Throws/other attacks

  • Change The endings of Lucas's grabs now feature interruptible animations during which the Rope Snake doubles back to return to Lucas.
  • Change Lucas's animation when holding a grabbed opponent has been altered, as he now holds the opponent with telekinesis with one hand and holds Rope Snake in the other.
    • Change Lucas now looks angry during his grab animation.
    • Change Lucas's pummel animation now features Rope Snake lunging at the opponent.
  • Nerf Lucas's standing grab range has been decreased.
    • Buff Lucas's standing grab has less endlag.
  • Change Lucas has a new forward throw animation similar to Diddy Kong's forward throw.
  • Buff Up throw deals more knockback.
  • Change Lucas has a new down throw animation. Lucas lifts the opponent in the air using telekinesis, then forcefully slams them into the ground, sending them up and away.
    • Nerf Down throw has more ending lag, hindering its follow-up potential.

Special Moves

  • Buff PK Freeze sends at a more horizontal angle, being better for edgeguarding.
    • Buff PK Freeze doesn't send Lucas into freefall and travels faster akin to Ness's PK Flash buff.
    • Change Lucas' animation during PK Freeze has been tweaked; Lucas himself now completely faces the screen, and the particle effects of the explosion now feature the PK Freeze graphic from Mother 3.
  • Change PK Fire now has its PSI graphics from Mother 3 when fired and upon hitting someone.
    • Change Similar to Ness, he leaves a red spark on his hand until he fires PK Fire, like his down smash.
    • Buff PK Fire has slightly decreased endlag.
    • Buff PK Fire has increased damage.
    • Nerf PK Fire has slightly increased landing lag.
  • Change Lucas’ PK Thunder 2 now has blue lightning, similar to Ness’, rather than the purple coloration from Smash 4.
    • Buff Grounded PK Thunder has reduced ending lag and moves slightly faster.
  • Change PSI Magnet now features its PSI graphics from Mother 3 upon use. Lucas' back is angled lower in the end of his animation, similar to the beginning of his run animation in Mother 3.
    • Buff PSI Magnet has less ending lag, meaning Lucas can act faster to attacks.
    • Buff PSI Magnet no longer halts Lucas's horizontal momentum in the air, akin to Ness's buff.
  • Change PK Starstorm is now similar to its Brawl iteration, firing meteors inwards towards the center of the stage, but at a slower rate and with slower meteors. His animation no longer reuses Ness' Final Smash animation and instead is more similar to his animation in Brawl. Lucas is also assisted by Kumatora and Boney. Like his other PSI moves, the move features graphics from PK Starstorm's animation in the Mother games.
    • Change If PK Starstorm is used via the Final Smash Meter, the trajectory of the meteors can be angled.

Role in World of Light

Lucas was absent in the World of Light trailer, though he presumably became a spirit alongside the rest of the galaxy (sans Kirby) when Galeem unleashed its beams of light.
