Samus (サムス・アラン, Samus Aran) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. She retains her modified Metroid: Other M design from SSB4.

Changes from Super Smash Bros. 4

NOTE: SmashWiki is not speculative. Please refrain from adding detailed data values derived from pre-release gameplay footage, such as the E3 demo. Such data (damage values, launch trajectories, frame data, etc.) are subject to change before the official release.

Aesthetics

  •   As with all veterans returning from SSB4, Samus's model features a more subdued color scheme.
  •   Samus has a new airdodge animation.
  •   Her eighth costume has been changed from dark-blue with light-blue highlights to black with yellow highlights.

Attributes

  •   Samus has faster horizontal aerial mobility. She reaches towards the maximum height of her jumps faster, but has the same total short hop and fullhop frames as in smash 4.
  •   Samus' roll is significantly faster.

Ground attacks

  •   Jab 1 has set knockback and hitstun, meaning it will struggle to combo into other moves (including jab 2) and is much less safe even at higher percents.
  •   Dash attack now produces an effect similar to her Shinespark ability.
  •   Dash attack has increased knockback, losing much of its previously potent combo potential.
  •   Forward smash has a slightly larger explosion sweetspot.
  •   Down smash deals more knockback.
  •   Down smash has an altered ending animation, with Samus keeping more momentum from her kick.

Aerial attacks

  •   Down aerial has significantly reduced landing lag.
  •   Up aerial has slightly better linking between hits.
  •   Neutral aerial's whole animation is quicker.
  •   Grab aerial no longer follows Samus's vertical movement, staying in place somewhat similar to its Melee incarnation.

Throws/other attacks

  •   Pummel is slower.
  •   Back throw deals significantly more knockback.
  •   Samus has a new up throw animation. She now uses her Arm Cannon to blast her opponents upwards instead of using her Grapple Beam.
  •   Her grabs have reduced startup and endlag.

Special moves

  •   Charge Shot can now be charged mid-air. It can be cancelled by jumping or airdodging.
  •   Super Missile travels faster and stalls before flying forward, similar to her Turbo Missile custom move from Super Smash Bros. 4.
  •   Screw Attack has less lag before she starts falling.
  •   Bomb has an earlier contact hitbox.
  •   When Samus unleashes Zero Laser, the jets on the back of her suit now release flames as exhaust.

Trivia

  • Samus is the only female character on the game's starting roster.
  • In her official artwork, Samus's pose matches this artwork of her alongside Anthony Higgs from Metroid: Other M. This same piece of artwork was used on the official website of Other M without Higgs.
    • In the game's cover artwork and the "Everyone is Here" cast artwork, Samus' pose matches her pose on the cover of Super Metroid.
  • Despite no longer being linked by in-battle transformation, Zero Suit Samus temporarily dons the Varia Suit during her Final Smash.
