Wobbuffet (ソーナンス, Sōnansu, Sonans in Japanese language versions) is a fictional creature in the Pokémon media franchise.

Wobbuffet is a tall, cyan blob-like creature that is extremely "stiff" in both posture and expression, resembling a blue punching bag in some respects. The Pokédex states that it hates light and shock, so it lives quietly in the darkness of caves during the daytime and only comes out in the night. For some reason always desperately tries to keep its black tail hidden, and if its tail is attacked it strikes back ferociously with either its countering abilities or its Destiny Bond battle ability. People theorize this proves its tail hides a secret. Its tail aside, the creature does nothing but endure attacks - it won't attack on its own, and is never first to attack. Instead, it relies on counterstrikes, and if attacked, it inflates its body to pump out its counterattacking ability. If two or more Wobbuffet meet, they will turn competitive and try to outdo each other's endurance. Trainers need to beware their occasional habit of trying to see which one can endure the longest without food, however.

Wobbuffet is a recurring character in the Pokemon anime as one of the main Pokemon of Team Rocket, right alongside Meowth. It is owned by Jessie, and it is seen so much, it almost is considered a fourth member of Team Rocket. Jessie accidentally traded Lickitung for Wobbuffet. In the video games, it is infamous for its ability to annihilate opponents through counterattacks and a huge amount of Hit Points, and an ability that prevents the opponent from switching Pokemon, making it banned to the "Uber tier" of Pokemon metagame play. It has been recommended that it be tested in lower tiers, but its dominance suggests it should remain in the Uber tier.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee

Wobbuffet in Melee

Wobbuffet appears as a Pokeball Pokémon in Super Smash Bros. Melee. Wobbuffet uses Counter as its attack. Wobbuffet rocks back and forth when the player attacks it or hits it with an item. Any character that makes contact with Wobbuffet's Counter will take damage. If Wobbuffet hasn't been hit, contact with it will still cause very minor knockback, but will cause no damage. The power of Wobbuffet's Counter attack varies. If Wobbuffet is hit with a weak attack, it won't wobble a lot. If Wobbuffet is hit with a strong attack, Counter will then cause more damage. Wobbuffet will wobble more intensly if hit with a powerful item. A character will take more damage if they are hit with a faster wobbling Wobbuffet. Also, characters can get trapped in a Wobbuffet's Counter if it is not too powerful. Wobbuffet's attack harms both opponents and the summoner.

In the Event Match Legendary Pokémon, Wobbuffet is the only non-Legendary Pokémon that will come out of Poké Balls, and while every legendary has their appearence rate doubled, Wobbuffet will appear for the remaining percentage of appearance rate. Wobbuffet's appearance as a common Pokémon in this event match is to discourage other characters from expecting a powerful legendary Pokémon. However, Wobbuffet can be useful in this Event Match. If Wobbuffet is hit with a powerful attack from a legendary Pokémon then it will start to wobble intensly. Characters that have a high damage percentage have the possibility of dying. The Wire Frames will have a hard time to try and avoid Wobbuffet's Counter in this Event Match. Wobbuffet will have two wrinkle like curves on the ends of mouth in this event. It is believed to cause a bit more damage.

As a stage element

A giant balloon of Wobbuffet (in actuality the 3D model of Wobbuffet used in Pokémon Stadium 2 for Nintendo 64) is one of the many floating and moving "platforms" that comprise the Poké Floats stage. It appears from the side horizontally and jerkily.

As a trophy

Wobbuffet is featured as a collectible trophy, unlocked as one of the 100+ trophies that can be collected randomly during normal play, such as in the Trophy Lottery and throughout the various Single-player Regular Matches. It reads as follows:

A Patient Pokémon, Wobbuffet lives in darkness to hide its mismatched black tail. Even for a stoic Pokémon, this creature is a testament to self-control; it will not actively attack an opponent. Its Counter and Mirror Coat moves are solely used for reflecting attacks directly back at its antagonist. (Pokemon Gold & Silver 10/00)

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Wobbuffet returns to repeat his role in Melee, but only by using the move Mirror Coat this time.

Trophy Description

A Patient Pokémon. A nocturnal, cave-dwelling creature, Wobbuffet is calm and collected, but it will fight back viciously if its black tail is attacked--this hints at something secretive about its tail. If Wobbuffet is put into battle, the opponent cannot run away or switch. Females have lipsticklike markings around their mouths.

Trivia

  • In the Pokemon games, counter inflicts twice the damage of the attack last used by the foe that is inflicted upon the user. This only applies to physical attacks, however, which is not always the case in Super Smash Bros. Also, different in Smash, Wobbuffet's counter deals about half the damage of the attack it is hit with.
