Challenges refers to a huge grid of windows that maintains track of all unlockable content. Whenever something is unlocked, it's place in the grid will break open, where you will be able to view it and the requirements to unlock it. If you unlocked a CD, you can listen to it directly from this screen.

Upon unlocking something, the squares to the left and right of the unlocked item will turn red. You will see a silhouette of the unlockable and while the game won't tell you what it is, it will tell you what you need to do to unlock it.

In addition, a limited supply of Golden Hammers will be available to the player, by using one of these hammers, the player can immediately break open a window without actually having to meet it's requirements. Some windows (presumably windows containing secret characters, stages & other features of similar worth) cannot be broken open via Golden Hammer.
