Melee Hell is a Facebook group, designed as a satirical response to the Melee Social Facebook group and Melee Social board on Smashboards. Brookman created the group and active posting members include Hungrybox, Mew2King and Hax, among many other Smashers though the majority of members, mostly due to content, are older members of the smash community.
Posters on Melee Hell often reference in-jokes, such as 20XX (with Hax being their lord and savior and with everyone in the group saying they main Fox), farcical posts about Melee's perceived quality compared to other games in the series, and satirical statements about other smashers. A large majority of posts also tend to be photoshopped images. Due to recent events, Melee Hell has grown, now numbering over 10.000 members. This number might change however as Melee Hell is well known for their frequent "Purges" where they put the group in Hidden or Private mode on Facebook before banning members who do not leave within a certain period after making an announcement. This is to, "keep things dank and fresh" according to their Facebook moderators.
Chu Dat Sponsorship
Most recently Melee Hell is know for Crowd Funding Chu Dat's EVO 2015 plane ride. Due to the "sponsorship," he entered the tournament as MH|Chu Dat and wore a Melee Hell designed shirt. In terms of why Chu Dat was sponsored, people noted that Chu Dat, while not being a Fox main, was the personification of a troll. Chu eventually got 7th, sparking more interest in Melee Hell such as by top player PPMD's posting.
Melee Hell Tag
Multiple smashers, such as Bones, have used "Melee Hell" as a clan name in tournaments. A large number of smashers also entered with the tag at Apex 2015, though this was mostly done as a joke, as well as serving as a practical way to organize a crew battle with members of Melee Social, though this never happened. Owing to the controversy over the group's existence, some tournament organizers have banned the use of the Melee Hell tag, though some organizations, such as CLASH Tournaments and VGBootCamp, do not ban the tag. To help alleviate issues with the community, many people enter as MH| instead of Melee Hell, citing that it is less controversial.
Controversy
Melee Hell has been controversial to some members of the community, with criticism being focused at the often vulgar and obscene content of the page; some of the content has also been criticized for being racist or sexist, as well as promoting trolling. Some followers of Melee Hell have also sent threats to smashers outside of the group; however, adm
