The Evolution 2008, or simply EVO 2008, was the 7th edition of the Evolution Championship Series, a fighting game tournament held annually in Las Vegas, Nevada, which took place from August 8th to 10th, 2008 at the Tropicana Las Vegas.

It was the second time EVO featured a Smash game on the official lineup, with Super Smash Bros. Brawl replacing Super Smash Bros. Melee from 2007. EVO 2008 is infamous for its ruleset which allowed items, including the Smash Ball.

General rules

  • Items are set to on and medium spawn.
  • 3 stocks, 2/3 games.
  • 5 minute time limit.
  • Sudden Death will not decide the outcome of the game.
  • Excessive stalling or abusing terrain to not engage the enemy is prohibited, and can be enforced by a tournament director only. This will result in a loss of the match.

  • First stage is Smashville
  • Winner keeps character
  • Loser can either pick stage or character
  • If loser picks stage then character is kept
  • If loser picks character then stage is kept
