The Back Shield (バックシールド, Bakkushīrudo) is a unique item introduced in Super Smash Bros. 4. As the name would suggest, the item protects the fighter's rear from harm. The shield lasts for 30 seconds, though what extent of abuse it can take before breaking is not yet known. It stays the same size for all characters, so is less protective for taller characters, while providing practically full rear protection for smaller characters.
Origin
The Back Shield originated as an item in Kid Icarus: Uprising. It was used to protect Pit from enemy attacks from behind and it rotated with Pit to always be behind him. In Super Smash Bros. 4, this is true; however, not much is known as to how much it protects the player.
