Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary is a mode in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, similar to Melee's Adventure Mode. It was hinted at with the This world... update on July 20th, and fully unveiled on August 3rd.

Overview
On July 20th, Smash Bros. Dojo!! was updated with a collection of enigmatic images that depicted Mario and Kirby transforming from trophies into fighters (akin to the introduction of Melee). After Kirby’s apparent defeat at the hands of Mario, he is changed back into a trophy, but Mario reverses the transformation and Mario and Kirby shake hands. However, the sky darkens soon after, and Meta Knight’s ship, the Halberd, flies over the stadium, soon followed by the appearance of a mysterious character. The screenshots were accompanied with this description:

As confirmed on Smash Bros. DOJO!!, Super Smash Bros. Brawl will feature a new single-player adventure mode called the Subspace Emissary. Sakurai stated that although the past games featured a large multi-player mode, they've never created an extensive single-player adventure. This time, the developers have included a plot-line that features the histories of the many fighters in Brawl. The Subspace Emissary will also include many new diverse characters, enemies, and levels that will each play a part in the adventure. The mode will also feature dozens of cut-scenes which are rare among Nintendo games
In this world, trophies fight. They know nothing but fighting. Fighting is the sole reason for their existence. Being turned back into a trophy, being unable to fight, is much like death. Those are the rules of this world.  But...When someone...or something...breaks those rules, the world will pay a terrible price...

Structure
The post was placed under a mode referred to as “???” until August 3rd, when it was changed to "Adventure Mode." On August 3rd, Smash Bros. Dojo!! was updated again. This time, more information was given. The mode was dubbed “The Subspace Emissary,” and a multitude of screenshots were shown, as well as a cutscene related to the “This World…” update. In the cutscene, Mario and Kirby were seen shaking hands, as depicted in the screenshots, and after waving to the crowd, the Halberd appeared as it did in “This World…” The mysterious character from before was shown to be one of apparently many odd, robot-like creatures formed from some sort of shadowy matter. Princess Peach and Princess Zelda were seen watching from the sidelines, but rushed down to the middle of the stadium to assist Mario and Kirby in fighting the mysterious army. After Peach and Zelda reach the stage and help destroy the Primids, an entity from the sky called The Ancient Minister appears on the stage. The Ancient Minister drops a Subspace Bomb on the arena, then flies off. As Mario approaches the bomb, he is hit by a cannonball and is sent flying from the arena. Petey Piranha appears and captures Peach and Zelda in cages. Some fans believe that Mario "broke the rules" of the World by reviving Kirby, and this is what triggered the Halberd to arrive and deploy its drones.

Stage selection is done via a map screen, which also allows players to select their difficulty (Easy, Normal, Hard, Very Hard, Intense) and determine if you want two-player co-op play. Before the beginning of each stage, the player picks a "Team" of allied characters that he or she would like to use to complete that particular level.  Each stage has a fixed amount of lives that one can lose before the game is lost.

In-Game Structure
The various screenshots in the update depicted a multitude of new enemies, as well as a few familiar ones, such as a Hammer Bro, who was previously confirmed as an Assist Trophy, and Bullet Bills. There were also a new series of enemies that were introduced that are part of the Subspace army. Some enemies of the Subspace army appear to be helpful while other ones are dangerous.
As you go through the game, your damage percentage will be displayed at the bottom of the screen for each player, just like in multiplayer battles. At the left side of the screen, a bar showing what seems to be your lives is displayed. A feature that was not present in Melee is that enemies now have health. As you fight them, their own health bars will be displayed at the top of the screen. More than one health bar may appear if you are fighting multiple enemies at once.

Co-op
The updates “This World…” and “What is the Subspace Emissary?” have definitely had an impact on the Super Smash Bros. community. Many have wondered whether a fully-fledged story would fit into the Super Smash Bros. universe or not. Others believe that it will change Super Smash Bros. for the better.
The Subspace Emissary supports two-player co-op.  When playing cooperatively, the two players share the same amount of lives. If player one is on his or her last life, and dies, but player two is still alive, the game is still over. Within stages, the game's camera follows player one, and so it is player two's responsibility to keep up with player one. If the two become separated, player two may return to player one's location with the "Space Jump" technique.

The World
Gameplay
The Subspace Emissary introduces players to the true world of Smash Bros. This world is composed of a wide variety of terrain ranging from vast forests and grasslands to deep caverns and large deserts. The most notable structure is the enormous stadium that hovers over the land. It was the major place of all battles, until the Subspace invasion began. During this invasion, the entire stadium, along with any potential visitors, were engulfed in a subspace bomb.
The Subspace Emissary mode is a side-scrolling adventure in the style of a platformer, inspired by the Mario and Kirby games. However, it retains all basic mechanics of Super Smash Bros., such as a damage meter, stocks and Smash-style attacks. The mode features a world map where stages are selected; once a stage is selected, the difficulty can be chosen, and the character(s) will enter the stage. The selectable characters will change depending on the plot; a character selection screen has been shown, but it is not clear whether the characters are chosen before selecting a stage or after. According to various movies shown at E for All, if you follow the plot without exiting the adventure mode, the screen will sometimes freeze and you'll be able to select a character depending on who's on the screen. For example, when Mario, Peach, Zelda and Kirby prepare to battle the subspace invaders back in the stadium, the cinematic will freeze and you'll get to choose between any of these 4 characters with a simple cursor.

Areas Revealed
Plot
Only a few areas have been revealed that you will have to fight through as of far:
spoiler
The story begins in a stadium, where Peach and Zelda are watching a friendly match between Mario and Kirby. The two fight with fierce intensity, and during the battle, a cutscene shows Pit observing the battle as well from a mystical fountain. Mario/Kirby wins, and Kirby/Mario turns into a trophy. Mario/Kirby returns Kirby/Mario back to normal, but when he does, the sky suddenly darkens and the Halberd appears out of nowhere. The Halberd shoots out little spores, which come together to make the Primid, the main force of the Subspace Army. Mario and Kirby, joined by Peach and Zelda, defeat the Primids. After they do, the leader of the Army, the Ancient Minister, appears and drops a Subspace Bomb, which is activated by two R.O.B.s, and is set to detonate in 2 minutes. Mario races to disarm the bomb, but is blasted out the stadium by a cannonball. Petey Piranha then captures the two princesses and attacks Kirby.

The Arena- The introduction of the plot takes place at the Smash Bros. Arena. Three battles will take place, the first being between Mario and Kirby. After the Subspace Army arrives, you will have to battle a group of Primid. Finally, you will face off with the first boss.
After Kirby defeats Petey, he explodes, and the cages the princesses were in break. Kirby and Peach/Zelda land safely only to watch Wario appear with a huge gun. Wario turns to see a weakened Zelda/Peach, and aims the gun at her. A black arrow comes out of the gun and hits her, turning her into a trophy. Wario grabs the trophy and runs out of the stadium. Kirby and Peach/Zelda run after him, but Kirby sees the bomb at 5 seconds before detonation, and takes Peach/Zelda with him on the Warp Star escapes from the Stadium as the bomb consumes the arena in Subspace. Pit sees the bomb detonate, and is ordered by Palutena to go and stop the Subspace Army. Pit takes his bow and descends into the clouds.
*Boss Battle- Petey Piranha

Skyworld- Pit's home land is supposedly the first actual level in the game. You will have to explore and find Mario in the clouds as Pit. From there, you will need to proceed to the surface of the world. A short battle with the Primid will take place here as well.
Pit fies down to a cloud, but sees the Halberd approaching. The Halberd creates more Primids to attack Pit, who splits his bow into swords and fights off the Primids. After fighting through several different types of Primid, Pit looks out and sees Mario's trophy and reawakens him. The two team up and go to fight the Subspace Army. The two heroes travel through the clouds chasing the Halberd, but realize that they aren't fast enough. Then, they see an Arwing chase the Halberd.
*Boss Battle- Greap

Jungle- You will play as Diddy and DK in this area. The Jungle is infested with Mario World enemies such as Goombas, Koopas, and Bullet Bills. A mini-boss battle with a Giant Goomba will take place here. Bowser is encountered at the end of the level wielding a trophy gun.
Meanwhile, Kirby and Peach/Zelda are still flying on the Warp Star when the Halberd comes up behind them. The Star hits the ship and the two land on it. They then go on to explore the ship, but they are interrupted by the ship battle between the Arwing and the Halberd. The Arwing is shot down and knocks over Peach/Zelda and Kirby as it falls out of the sky. The two manage to land safely on a cloud and are confronted by the Subspace Army. The two begin to descend to solid ground as they fight through the Primid. After defeating a larger member of the Subspace Army, a Greap, the two continue their journey.
*Boss Battle-  Bowser

The Lake- The player(s) control Diddy Kong and Fox in this level. The only known gameplay in this area is a boss battle with Rayquaza.
In a jungle, a car with a load of bananas piloted by a Koopa Troopa drives at insane speeds escaping the woods. Donkey Kong is then seen beating up some Goombas and other Koopa Troopas. When he goes onto a ledge and sees the Koopa's car, a Goomba fires three Bullet Bills at him. Diddy Kong jumps out of nowhere and shoots down the Bullet Bills with his Peanut Popguns, and the two Kongs chase the car. After facing some giant Goombas and other Koopa Troopas, the two find the stash of bananas, but are confronted by Bowser. Bowser pulls out the gun that Wario used and points it at Diddy. Donkey Kong realizes what will happen and punches Diddy away, only to be turned into a trophy by Bowser. Bowser laughs evily and carries his prize with him.
*Boss Battle- Rayquaza

The Storyline
Meanwhile, Mario and Pit continue their journey through a meadow-like area. The two finally find the Ancient Minister, who is carrying a Subspace Bomb. They both try to hit him, but miss. The Ancient Minister continues flying as Mario and Pit continue the chase.

The plot introduces the Subspace Army, which includes an array of dark creatures called the Primid. Their ruler, known as the Ancient Minister plans to use special bombs to break apart the world and carry it into Subspace.
Meanwhile Diddy is coming from the jungle into a lake, where a Rayquaza attacks an Arwing that crashed and grabs Diddy. Fox McCloud emerges from the Arwing and saves Diddy. The two then team up to face Rayquaza and defeat it. Diddy then drags Fox with him back into the jungle. After facing more of Bowser's troops and exploring more places in the jungle, the two confront a clone of Bowser made by Shadow Bugs. After defeating him, the real Bowser fires another shot from the trophy gun at them. Fox grabs Diddy and jumps off a cliff to save them both.

So far, it appears that most, if not all of the playable characters will have some sort of role even the third parties. There seems to be many sub-plots that will presumably all merge together in the same story that involves the Subspace Army.
The story then goes to an abandoned town, where Lucas is attacked by the King P. Statue and a group of Primids. Lucas runs from the statue, but is eventually trapped by a root in the ground, but is saved by Ness, who destroys the statue with PK Flash, revealing Pokey Minch in a giant spider mech. After defeating Pokey, the two are attacked by Wario. Wario fires the trophy gun at Ness, who dodges every shot. Wario finally aims the gun at Lucas, but Ness gets in the way and gets hit. Lucas, frightened, runs away from Wario, who now has the Ness trophy. Lucas runs into the Pokémon Trainer and his Pokémon Squirtle, who takes him with him to find two other Pokémon.

Before playing each part of the Subspace Emissary, you can choose between two characters to play as, like Mario and Kirby, or between Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong.
Elsewhere, Marth is seen watching some R.O.B.s detonate another Subspace Bomb and races to find out how to stop it, but his castle is besieged by the Subspace Army. Marth fights his way through swarm after swarm of the Army until he finally gets to the grounds outside of the castle, where he watches the area of Subspace slowly expand. Meta Knight then flies in and attacks Marth, and the two duel briefly, but they are interupted by Primids and team up to stop them. After stopping the wave of Primids, they see the Ancient Minister. The two desperately attempt to stop him, but fail. Finally, Ike attacks with Aether and cuts the bomb from under the Minister and severs his floating chair, sending him whirling off into the sky. The three then tem up to chase down the Ancient Minister and stop the Subspace Army.

Seemingly, the first event starts with Mario and Kirby fighting in the Arena with Zelda and Peach cheering in the stands. The story can be changed slightly depending on what characters you choose to play as. In this particular storyline, Mario ultimately wins, and Kirby turns into a trophy. As an act of compassion Mario revives Kirby and the two shake hands, forming a friendship.  Suddenly, Meta Knight's Battleship Halberd arrives on the scene with an army of Primid, soldiers of the Subspace Army, along with a Subspace Bomb operated by two Robotic Operating Buddies (R.O.B). From the stands, Zelda and Peach come down to Mario and Kirby's side. The Ancient Minister, leader of the Subspace Army, then makes a brief pass, after which the ROBs activate the bomb which has a 3-minute timer. Mario charges forward to deactivate the bomb, but gets blindsided by a cannon ball and is shot miles away. Meanwhile, the two onlooking princesses, Peach and Zelda, get captured in cages by Petey Piranha. Kirby then battles Petey to save one of the two princesses.
On a remote road, Luigi is passed by a Waddle Dee and then another. Thinking they are enemies, he gets into a cowardly fighting stance. He is attacked from behind by King Dedede and turned into a trophy. Wario passes by and sees the Luigi trophy and tries to grab it, but the Waddle Dees ambush him while Dedede steals his trophy car and his trophies.

Once Kirby breaks one of the cages and saves one of the princesses, Petey is  defeated and burning. Wario next comes on the scene and turn the princess who was not saved into a trophy using a gun that fires black arrows. Wario  then grabs the trophy and flees. Meanwhile, the bomb is getting ready to blow, and Kirby and the princess take off on a Warpstar, neither being capable of destroying the bomb, which explodes soon after. The bomb imprisons the Arena and its crowd inside an enormous orb of dark Subspace Energy.
Meanwhile, in the Lost Woods, Link pulls out the Master Sword. He leaves, but passes by a sleeping Yoshi. The Halberd passes over the two and immediately drops Primids, awakening Yoshi and putting the two into a team. The two heroes beat back the Subspace Army as they try to escape from the Lost Woods and chase down the Halberd.

Meanwhile, Pit, in Skyworld, is watching Mario and Kirby's fight on a screen. Once he sees the whole terrible scene, including the bomb explosion, he retrieves his bow from Palutena and sets off to help. Amidst the clouds, the Halberd appears and drops off a wave of Primid to hinder Pit. Pit prevails and notices Mario's trophy stuck in the clouds and revives Mario. Pit and Mario join forces with the goal of destroying the Subspace Army. They miss catching the Halberd but see an Arwing fly by
On a secret island, Samus Aran is shown sneaking into a base in her Zero Suit. After getting by some R.O.B.s, she enters a room where she sees Pikachu in some kind of torture device that is being used to clone him and breaks it with her Paralyzer Gun. This sets off an alarm and many R.O.B.s start to attack. The two travel through the base searching for something. After fighting their way past the guards, they enter a control room, where Samus sees her Power Suit...

Kirby and the princess then get shot down by the Halberd and land on the ship. They then explore the surface of the ship when Fox and his Arwing come to fight the Halberd. Fox dodges laser fire but gets hit by the Halberd's retractable arm. Fox's Arwing then spirals and crashes onto the ship, knocking Kirby and the other princess down to earth. There, they battle members of the Subspace Army.
In a pass, Kirby sees King Dedede go by in the trophy car and chases after it, leaving Peach/Zelda behind. Peach/Zelda turns, but is transformed into a trophy by Bowser. The clone of Bowser comes up to the trophy and consumes it, creating a clone of her. The clone tries to shoot Mario/Link and Pit/Yoshi, who are running by, with the trophy gun, but it is destroyed when Link/Pit shoots an arrow at it. The Peach/Zelda clone then faces Link/Mario and Yoshi/Pit and is defeated.

Meanwhile, Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong chase after King Bowser's minions, who have stolen their bananas for some reason. After a battle with a Mega Goomba, DK and Diddy find their bananas, but are ambushed by Bowser. DK punches Diddy to safety, and is then reverted into a trophy by Bowser, who is using the same gun as Wario.
Mario/Link looks up and sees Link/Mario and Yoshi/Pit standing by the clone's trophy and attacks Link/Mario. Link and Yoshi/Mario and Pit then face Mario and Pit/Link and Yoshi, defeating them. King Dedede then grabs Mario and Pit/Link and Yoshi's trophies with an arm from the car, but the arm is cut in half by Kirby, who revives Mario and Pit/Link and Yoshi as well. Pit/Link then destroys the car by shooting an arrow at it, and King Dedede takes the ramaining trophies and runs. The five heroes team up and chase King Dedede down.

Mario and Pit arrive at the surface world and chase the Ancient Minister but are unable to catch him.
Meanwhile, in a control room, Ganondorf orders Bowser to track down Dedede and gives him the coordinates to his location.

Later, Diddy finds Fox's crashed Arwing by an enormous lake. Rayquaza suddenly rises out of the lake, destroys what remains of the Arwing, and captures Diddy. Fox is ejected out of his destroyed ship at the last second and rescues Diddy from Rayquaza. Together the two fight Rayquaza.
At a remote mountain, Lucas and the Trainer see a Charizard fly into a cave and follow it. The two journey through some ruins and an active lava pit until they confront Wario by the cave's entrance. Lucas and Squirtle fight Wario and defeat him, which turns him into a trophy.

After Fox and Diddy prevail, they set off to revive DK. They find Bowser and defeat him, although it is revealed afterwards that this was merely a copy of Bowser formed by a horde of Shadow Bugs, which make up nearly all of the enemies from Subspace. The real Bowser strikes, and Diddy and Fox are forced to flee into the water.
Mario, Pit, Link, Kirby, and Yoshi go into Dedede's hiding place, which was trashed when Bowser and his men attacked it. They see a hole in the wall and go inside of it. When they get out of the building, Mario sees Bowser and attempts to punch him. Bowser holds up Peach's trophy and Mario stops. Pit fires an arrow that Bowser nearly dodges, and a Dedede cap comes off of peach's trophy. Bowser then gets in his floating bowl and heads back to the Halberd. Meanwhile, the Ancient Minister sets up a bomb outside of the building, and Ganondorf is shown receiving orders from the Master Hand via TV screen.

Meanwhile, in a faraway place, Lucas is attacked by a strange monster. He trips, but is saved by Ness, who defeats the creature. Porky then appears, and commences battle with Ness and Lucas. Porky is eventually defeated, but Wario ruins the moment by firing another black arrow at Lucas. Ness pushes Lucas out of the way, but in so doing is reverted into a trophy, which Wario runs off with. Lucas runs off.
Pokemon Trainer and Lucas continue their trek into the cave, fighting off the Subspace Army as they go. After descending through floor after floor of enemies, the Trainer sees an Ivysaur trophy and captures it. The two then continue to procede deeper into the cave, where they come face-to-face with Charizard. Lucas, Squirtle, and Ivysaur defeat Charizard, and the Trainer captures him.

Lucas bumps into Pokemon Trainer throws out Squirtle and both battle a group of primid. Both then decide to team-up and find his other pokemon.
Marth, Ike, and Meta Knight fight a giant robot that they had apparently been tracking in a desert. They defeat it, but it instead falls into a cave, the one where Lucas and the Trainer are in. They defeat the robot, but it turns that the robot had a Subspace Bomb used as a self-destruct and takes both of the characters to the skies. Lucas, now gaining his courage, uses PK Thunder to detach the robot's arm that was holding them and they both start falling presumably to their doom until Meta Knight catches them.

Marth stands on an abandoned castle watches as an army of Primid march to the ruined castle behind a recently exploded bomb. After defeating the army, Meta Knight attacks him and engage in battle think they are part of the other side. They set aside their differences to fight the Primid. Both catch up to the Ancient Minister, but fail to stop him until Ike arrives and stops the Minister.
The Ancient Minister shows up in the same desert, but in a different region, where he is confronted by Mario's group. After fleeing from them, the group gives chase. After going through a wide spanse of the desert, the group catches up to the Minister, who starts firing shots at the group. A R.O.B. grabs the bomb underneath the Minister and gets some others to activate it. Despite the group's best efforts, the bomb is still activated. As the Minister flies away, a R.O.B. looks up at him and waves goodbye. The bomb detonates, but the group just barely manages to escape as they run as quickly as they can away from it.

Luigi is standing in a road and is frightened by Waddle Dee's. He gets scared and surprised when King Dedede turns him into a trophy. Wario then appears in a cart with a trophied Ness and one of the princesses. The king uses Luigi as bait to steal the cart.
The Halberd comes by, Meta Knight and Ice Climbers came up to a tundra. When they reach the top, Lucario challenges Meta Knight to a battle, with either Lucario or Meta Knight being the victor. The Halberd is seen attempting to throw off the characters, but Meta Knight and Lucario manage to succesfully get on board on the airship.

Link pulls the master sword from its rock in the forest. The Halberd then flies over the sky and releases a group of Primid. Yoshi wakes up and both decide to team up. After the battle, they reach the end of the forest and barely miss the Halberd so they continue on.
Unbeknowist to them, a cardboard box is seen on a hallway of the Halberd and Solid Snake appears out of the box, then quickly hides again after seeing Meta Knight and Lucario coming his way. Lucario gets suspicious about the box and uses his senses to detect Snake and lifts the cardboard box. Meta Knight prepares to attack Snake, but Lucario resists, as the enemies are aware of their presence. In a room where the two princesses are locked up in cages, the Shadow Bugs create clones of the princess and the trio fight them. Zelda and Peach regain their nomral selves and Zelda decides to revert into Sheik. The princesses escape, while the trio discover that the ship was being controlled by manipulated Mr. Game & Watches. The trio throw them off the window, but that is not before they transform into a robot. Sheik broke the front window of the Fox's Arwing and the two charges at each other when Peach gets out cups of tea to settle the matters. Meta Knight regains control of the ship and heads towards the group who were waiting outside.

Zero Suit Samus is seen infiltrating an underground compound. She finds Pikachu trapped and being tortured by an electric beam. Samus frees Pikachu and is then attacked by ROBs. Samus and Pikachu then find what Samus was really trying to find: her Power Suit.
Features
As previously stated, the mode features an original storyline with several all-new enemies designed specifically for Brawl. It is also assumed that several new stages, such as Terra Firma, will appear. <br>
The Team update revealed several new details about the gameplay. The mode features co-op; a second player can play at the same time as the first, though the camera still focuses on Player 1. If player 2 gets too far behind, then they will get boosted up to where player 1 is. Also if player 1 loses all of their stocks, player 2 loses as well. In addition, players will be able to "power up" their characters with Stickers that you obtain in the differents game modes.

Kirby and the princess encounter Bowser and he shoots the princess with the trophy gun. He then creates a copy of the princess and gives her the trophy gun.

If Peach is the copy; The fake Peach tries to fire at Mario but is stopped by Link and Yoshi. Link and Yoshi then destroys the copy which catches Mario's eye and Mario and Pit battle Yoshi and Link. Link and Yoshi win and Mario and Pit become trophies. King Dedede drives by in the car and Kirby jumps on and tries to free the trophies. Kirby activates Mario and Pit. Pit then fires an arrow at the cart to slow it down.

If Zelda is the copy; The fake Zelda tries to fire at Link but is stopped by Mario and Pit. Mario and Pit then destroys the copy which catches Link's eye and Mario and Pit battle Yoshi and Link. Mario and Pit win and Link and Yoshi become trophies. King Dedede drives by in the car and steals the trophies. Kirby jumps on and tries to free the trophies. Kirby activates Link and Yoshi. Link then fires an arrow at the cart to slow it down.

Captain Olimar and his Pikmin are attacking a ROB on the same island but most of the Pikmin are killed by it. A red Pikmin points to a the edge and Captain Falcon and his ship destroy the ROB and kill most of the Pikmin. Olimar and Captain Falcon see Falco and Fox's ships attacking the ship that is carrying DK to the island. Diddy jumps out from one of the ships while Captain Falcon and Olimar jump off the island. They all land on the ship. Diddy activates DK and the 4 of them fight members of the Army. The ship lands on the island so Fox and Falco retreat.

Meta Knight, Marth, Ike, Lucas, and the Pokemon Trainer see the Halberd being attacked by Falco's Ship above a mountain. Near the top of the mountain they see the Ice Climbers climbing towards the summit. Meta Knight flies up to join them. Near the top of the mountain they run into Lucario. Lucario and Meta Knight fight. The loser (based on the players choice) is turned into a trophy but is revived by the winner. They become friends. The Halberd slams into the mountain. The Ice Climbers fall off the mountain while Lucario and Meta Knight jump on the Halberd.
Updates
This details the various updates in regards to Subspace Emissary.
* This world... Though vague, it hints at the Subspace Emissary mode. It describes a world where trophies fight (the Smash world), and where being returned to trophy form is akin to death. It also states that breaking "the rules" will have dire consequences, and ends the update with a mysterious shadowy creature (now known to be a Primid). The update features a black background, opposed to the white background normally used for updates.
* What is the Subspace Emissary? The first "official" update on the mode. Over a dozen screenshots are shown, as well as a video clip that shows an animated version of the screenshots in This World. The update lays out the basics of SE, with the plot focusing on character development and moved along by quick cutscenes.
* The Subspace Army. Properly introduces the Subspace Army, including the Primids, the grunts of the Army, and the Ancient Minister, its leader. A video clip included with the update shows a Subspace Bomb, Mario being knocked away by a cannonball, and Petey Piranha trapping the two princesses in cages, leaving Kirby to fight by himself.
* Petey Piranha A character description of Petey Piranha, who appears to be a boss character. Petey cannot be directly defeated; instead, Kirby must damage the cages trapping the princesses. Only one of the princess can be rescued, as the Subspace Bomb's timer apparently forces Kirby and the rescued princess to escape.
* Pit's Descent A video clip showcasing Pit's entry into SE. From a temple in Skyworld, he is called by Palutena, the Goddess of Light, to help combat the Subspace Army; to help him, he is given a magical bow that can split into two swords. He meets up with a trophy Mario in the clouds (Mario was blasted there by Petery Piranha). Pit revives Mario and goes on to fight alongside him.
* The Enemies from Subspace Shows several of the stronger members of the Subspace Army.
* Team unveils several new elements in SE, including a world map, co-op play, teams of characters that join together and a vague comment about "powering up" characters to combat the Army.
* Donkey Kong makes his stand Donkey Kong's bananas have been stolen by a hoard of Bowser's minions. Now it's up to the ape and his sharp-shooter nephew, Diddy, to reclaim the thieved fruits.
* Fox's Misfortune Diddy Kong comes upon an crashed Arwing near the jungle's lake. However, Rayquaza emerges from the lake and snares Diddy. Rayquaza is then thwarted by Fox as he rescues Diddy and reflects Rayquaza's attack back at it.
* Subspace Emissary Movie A Short trailer for the Subspace Emissary. While containing most of the footage already seen, some new things are shown, like Bowser attacking Fox and Diddy with the Trophy Gun, and an interesting team up of Meta-Knight and the Ice Climbers.
* Sticker Power-Ups Showing that some Stickers can be used as power-ups.

The Ice Climbers land near Marth, Ike, Lucas, and the Pokemon Trainer and are attacked by members of the Subspace Army. On a nearby hill are Mario, Pit, Kirby, Link, and Yoshi who fight the Army.

On the Halberd Snake uncovers himself from under his box. Snake fights though the Halberd until he finds Meta Knight and Lucario. He hides under his box but, Lucario uses his Aura powers to see him under the box. Lucario then uncovers him. Meta Knight is about to attack but Lucario see the Subspace Army coming towards them. The three of them fight the army until they reach a room. The room has the caged trophies of Zelda and Peach. Shadow bugs cover them to make clones of Zelda and Peach. Snake, Lucario, and Meta Knight fight and destroy the clones. Peach and Zelda  are freed but are told to stay in that room by Snake.

Zelda transforms into Sheik and she and Peach escape the room. They fight their way to the top of the ship. Meanwhile Fox and Falco continue to attack the ship. When Peach is almost hit Sheik jumps onto to Fox's ship and pulls him out of it. They both land on the ship and begin fighting. Peach stops this and gives them both tea.

Snake, Lucario, and Meta Knight reach the control room of the Halberd to find it is controlled by many Mr. Game and Watches. They force them out onto the front of the ship where Peach, Sheik, and Fox are. The Mr. Game and Watches turn out to be clones made of Subspace bugs. These bugs reform into a giant robot. Snake and Lucario jump onto the front of the ship to join Peach, Sheik, and Fox while Falco lands his ship to join them. The six of them fight and destroy the robot forcing the bugs to flee the ship leaving a Mr. Game and Watch trophy behind. Sheik wants to attack the trophy but Peach activates it and gives Mr. Game and Watch her umbrella he then dance with it. Meta Knight regains control of his ship and flies it out of the red mist.

Back on the island Pikachu and Samus attack a Subspace Army base and find the area where Subspace Bomb are made. Captain Falcon, Olimar, DK, and Diddy also find this area. The area is protected by the Ancient Minister and an army of ROBs. Ganondorf appears in a hologram and tells the ROBs to activate the Subspace bomb. The Ancient Minister tell them not too but Ganondorf takes control over them and has them activate the bombs. The Ancient Minister tries to stop them but Ganondorf has them attack him. He is left their to burn. However the Ancient Minister turns out to be a ROB. He, Pikachu, Samus, Captain Falcon, Olimar, DK, and Diddy have to fight their way out of the base and off the island. Captain Falcon calls his ship and when they jump off a ledge they land on it but the ship is chased by Mecha Ridley who they have to fight while on Captian Falcon's ship. They defeat Mecha Ridley snd escape the island just as the bombs go off.

The Halberd and Captain Falcon's ship land near the beach where The Ice Climbers, Marth, Ike, Lucas, the Pokemon Trainer, Mario, Pit, Kirby, Link, and Yoshi are. A giant cannon appears from the Subspace with Bowser and Ganondorf on top. It launches a beam of energy which creates area of subspace where the characters were. The Halberd then fly toward the cannon with the cannon's defense attacking back. The Halberd is hit but out from it flies many of the characters other ships who fly toward it. From the opposite side Kirby flies in on the Dragoon and cuts the cannon in half. As the cannon is falling apart Bowser and Ganondorf retreat into subspace. The other characters fallow.

The characters appear on a ledge inside subspace. They begin to fight their way toward the center. As Bowser and Ganondorf reach the center Ganondorf uses the last trophy gun to turn Bowser into a trophy. Master Hand then appears in before Ganondorf. However  he has laser beam come out from him link strings. The holder is Taboo. Ganondorf attacks Taboo but is thrown back against Master Hand who is released from Taboo's control. Ganondorf lands as a trophy but Master Hand gets up and attacks but is thrown down. The other characters reach the center. Taboo grows wings and launches a wave that turns all of the characters into trophies. Taboo is then surrounded by glowing spheres and a path to him is formed.

At King Dedede's Castle (which is in Subspace) the badges the King but on Luigi and Ness's trophies revive them. They then remove the badges and revive Dedede. The three of them head toward the center of  Subspace collecting other characters's trophies. When they reach the center King Dedede revives Bowser who attacks him. King Dedede beat Bowser and then re-revives him. Bowser is about to attack him but King Dedede hit him in the nose.

Elsewhere in Subspace Kirby is revived and spits out King Dedede's badge. Kirby the heads toward the center of Subspace collecting other characters's trophies. When Kirby reaches the center he finds the Ganondorf trophy. Bowser then attack the trophy. King Dedede tackles, hugs, and drags Kirby away.

If both Zelda and Link are saved by Luigi, Dedede, Ness, and Kirby they revive Ganondorf and head toward Taboo. If Wario is saved, As King Dedede is looking toward Taboo Wario tackles him. Ness and Luigi help the King up. Wario is stocked Ness and Luigi are alive. They point toward Taboo as they head toward him. Wario races up the steps on his motorcycle.

All the chacters fight taboo, but they all lose. Then he is about to turn them into trophies again when sonic dashes and hurts taboo saveing the fighters lives, now the real fight starts. after they defeat aboo, the subspace wormholes vanish still what happened to sonic and mario and the others?

Weapons and Defense
The Subspace Army possesses special weapons called Subspace Bombs. The R.O.B.s (Robotic Operating Buddies) assist in activating each bomb. When a Subspace bomb explodes, it creates an enormous ball of energy that engulfs the area and brings it into Subspace. It is currently unknown as to what happens to living creatures when sucked into Subspace. In addition to the bombs, the Subspace Army also controls Meta Knight's massive airship, the Halberd. They use the Halberd to transport their armies and deliver the Subspace Bombs to their destinations.

Shadow Bugs
These creatures are pieces of an unknown substance that can merge together to form Primids and other Subspace Army enemies. In addition, Shadow Bugs can also create an evil copy of one of the characters if they come into contact with a trophy of them. According to the Shadow Bug trophy, the Shadow Bugs were first extracted from Mr. Game and Watch and used by Taboo to form Subspace.

The Primid
The Primid are the Subspace Army's main offensive soldiers . They are puppet-like beings who bear the Subspace symbol on their chest and they appear in different types:

*Common Primid - These are the main Primid enemies that you encounter throughout the game. They mostly run around and make faces at you, but can also attack unexpectedly.
*Red Primid - Making a vague appearance in a trailer, this type of Primid is able to breathe fire.
*Boom Primid - These Primid carry enormous boomerangs and can therefore attack you from great distance.
*Bomb Primid- These black, red, and gray Primid carry large bombs. If you touch one, they will explode or throw bombs at you. Sonic is the best parter to take care of them.
*Saber Primid- Shown in a trailer, these elite fighters wield large, blue beam swords. Based on their nature, they are much more dangerous than other Primid variations.
*Laser Primid- These Primid are able to shoot red lasers from their hands.
*Big Primid- These Primid are the largest Primid type, hence the name. While they are very similar to normal Primid both in attacks and appearance, they are fairly stronger. They also have jump and roll attacks.

Other Enemies
The Subspace army have many robotic minions that assist them greatly during the game, including the R.O.B.s that were seen during the video, whom have missiles and lasers as their weaponry. So far the largest of their robots seem to be the Greap - a large hulking mechanic being that sports two incredible sickles. One of the strangest robots that they've created are the Shaydas, who seem to be made entirely out of fog - though also have two large sword like weapons as well. Their weak spot is the glowing orb in their chest.

The Bytan, while seemingly harmless - aren't, as the small spheroids are capable of multiplying. The Poppant, on the other hand, are relatively harmless, seeing that once you approach them, they'll cower and skedaddle off the stage. Roaders are unicycle like enemies who drive around the stage - and are very fast at doing so. Also, Roaders are reminiscent of the original ExciteBiker.

The Glunder is a static-producing eyeball that hides in a metal shell( There are also fire and ice-using variants called the Glire and the Glice.) When you get near them, they open their shells and send out electricity, fire or ice, depending on the type. Spaaks are large mechanical clouds that try to ram you. When attacked, they turn black and become more aggressive. Mites are tiny creatures that look like stick figure drawings. They like to attack in huge groups and are continuously produced through dark portals that can also be destroyed.

The Trowlon is a pink robotic like creature who is quite thin compared to many of the others. According to the website it'll use its trowel like arms to carry their opponents, or rather your character, away. Whether or not this means an instant kill is unknown. Finally, the Auroros are large mechanic birds who'll charge their beaks into the ground, attempting to harm you. A recent game trailer revealed a few other Subspace enemies including a hovering jellyfish-like creature, circular enemies that move on a track and drop fireballs, and what appears to be a creature that throws large bombs.

Aside from these well-known enemies, there are others that have also been confirmed to appear. A few of these come from an actual series, including the Hammer Bro., Bullet Bills, Goombas, and Koopas. The rest of the confirmed enemies are completely unknown. These include sword wielding fish, a strange ram-like creature, and a fire-launching spacecraft. Their relation to the Subspace Army is still questionable.

The Enemy
The main enemy of the Subspace Emissary was assumed to be the Ancient Minister as well as his army, which consists of the Primid but was later proved false. The real villian is yet to be revealed. The Halberd has been taken over by the Ancient Minister, but it is unknown if Meta Knight himself has joined his side. The Subspace Emissary Movie, which was posted on the official Smash Bros. homepage, revealed that Meta-Knight is working together with Ice Climbers in the Subspace Emissary. Apparently, Petey Piranha from the Mario series is working for the Subspace Army and has captured Princess Peach and Zelda. The official website also revealed a number of enemies that fight for the Subspace Army (a list of which can be seen under "Weapons and Defense" above). Each of these creative creatures bears the Subspace Symbol on some part of their body.

Petey Piranha is the first boss in the Subspace Emissary. You will fight him as Kirby. He will attack using the cages that contain Peach and Zelda. Your job is to break one of the cages, thus freeing the princess inside. After you defeat Petey Piranha, Wario will appear and use a strange machine called a Dark Cannon to transform the princess you didn't save into her trophy form and kidnap her. As mentioned before, being a trophy is apparently a bad thing.

As seen in Fox's misfortune and the Trophy Stands update, Rayquaza appears as a boss that Diddy Kong and/or Fox fight. The whereabouts of Donkey Kong are unknown.
It has been suggested over at the official website that there will be many bosses in the game other than Petey Piranha and Raquaza, all of whom will probably be a major (or minor) boss in a Nintendo or third party video game series.

Subspace Emissary Logo.jpg

In this world, trophies fight. They know nothing but fighting. Fighting is the sole reason for their existence. Being turned back into a trophy, being unable to fight, is much like death. Those are the rules of this world. But...When someone...or something...breaks those rules, the world will pay a terrible price...

Gameplay

Plot

Template:Spoiler The story begins in a stadium, where Peach and Zelda are watching a friendly match between Mario and Kirby.

Meanwhile, Mario and Pit continue their journey through a meadow-like area. The two finally find the Ancient Minister, who is carrying a Subspace Bomb. They both try to hit him, but miss. The Ancient Minister continues flying as Mario and Pit continue the chase.

Meanwhile, in a control room, Ganondorf orders Bowser to track down Dedede and gives him the coordinates to his location.

At a remote mountain, Lucas and the Trainer see a Charizard fly into a cave and follow it. The two journey through some ruins and an active lava pit until they confront Wario by the cave's entrance. Lucas and Squirtle fight Wario and defeat him, which turns him into a trophy.

Features

As previously stated, the mode features an original storyline with several all-new enemies designed specifically for Brawl. It is also assumed that several new stages, such as Terra Firma, will appear.

Updates

This details the various updates in regards to Subspace Emissary.

 • This world...
 • What is the Subspace Emissary? The first "official" update on the mode. Over a dozen screenshots are shown, as well as a video clip that shows an animated version of the screenshots in This World. The update lays out the basics of SE, with the plot focusing on character development and moved along by quick cutscenes.
 • The Subspace Army.
 • Petey Piranha A character description of Petey Piranha, who appears to be a boss character. Petey cannot be directly defeated; instead, Kirby must damage the cages trapping the princesses. Only one of the princess can be rescued, as the Subspace Bomb's timer apparently forces Kirby and the rescued princess to escape.
 • Pit's Descent A video clip showcasing Pit's entry into SE.
 • The Enemies from Subspace Shows several of the stronger members of the Subspace Army.
 • Team unveils several new elements in SE, including a world map, co-op play, teams of characters that join together and a vague comment about "powering up" characters to combat the Army.
 • Donkey Kong makes his stand Donkey Kong's bananas have been stolen by a hoard of Bowser's minions. Now it's up to the ape and his sharp-shooter nephew, Diddy, to reclaim the thieved fruits.
 • Fox's Misfortune Diddy Kong comes upon an crashed Arwing near the jungle's lake. However, Rayquaza emerges from the lake and snares Diddy. Rayquaza is then thwarted by Fox as he rescues Diddy and reflects Rayquaza's attack back at it.
 • Subspace Emissary Movie A Short trailer for the Subspace Emissary. While containing most of the footage already seen, some new things are shown, like Bowser attacking Fox and Diddy with the Trophy Gun, and an interesting team up of Meta-Knight and the Ice Climbers.
 • Sticker Power-Ups Showing that some Stickers can be used as power-ups.
