The music of Super Smash Bros. Brawl is more major and important to the game experience than previous games in the series. Among videogames in general, SSBB's musical setup is noteworthy for being a gigantic compilation of Nintendo music exponentially larger than even the musical selection of Super Smash Bros. Melee.
The full list of credited musicians for the game is posted here at Smash Bros. DOJO!!, and it numbers at 36 individuals as one of the biggest musical gatherings in gaming history, according to Masahiro Sakurai. Curiously, Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu is not among the list, even though he is credited for composing the official theme song for the game detailed below. Sakurai has stated that his group of arrangement supervisors were asked to listen to "an elite selection of Nintendo music" and arrange several of their favorite songs, which "means there will be quite a number of songs."
As revealed on the site here, the game will include a feature called My Music: Each stage in the game will have multiple songs available to be played during battle (over four per stage according to screenshots), and the game will randomly select one of them for when the match starts. The player may adjust the likeliness that each song may play on each stage to his or her preference. Also, occasionally in battle a collectible called a CD will appear in battle and can be picked up like a sticker would; this unlocks new music that can be used with any of the stages. Since each stage has many available songs through this system rather than just one or two songs for each stage in Melee, this indicates an immensely larger collection of music in Brawl.
From time to time, DOJO!! will post a piece of music from the game as one of its updates to the site.
Main Theme
The Main Theme song was revealed along with the game itself at the game's first trailer in E3 2006. In this initial appearance it is a thundering orchestra with vocals sung in Latin. It was composed by famed Final Fantasy series composer Nobuo Uematsu, and its lyrics were supervised by Sakurai himself. In September 7, 2007, it was reposted on DOJO!! as part of a string of music-related updates.
A synthesized remix of the track without vocals was heard in the game's second trailer at Nintendo World 2006. Some believe this version may be menu screen music for the game. In the 15-second mini-trailer posted on Dojo on July 12th, 2007, a short remix of the main theme is also played.
Dojo!! music updates
From time to time, Dojo!! will post a piece of music from the game as one of its updates to the site, allowing viewers to get veritable audio previews for the game.
- The Musicians: Along with revealing the game's musician list, this update to Dojo!! reveals a revised version of Super Smash Bros. Melee's Menu 1 theme, which is stated to be used as the music for the Battlefield (SSBB) stage.
- Yoshi's Story: Ending: This is a remix of an ending sequence in the Nintendo 64 game Yoshi's Story, and the music will be featured in the game, probably as the music for the Yoshi's Island stage in Brawl.
- Metroid: Boss Battle Music (Ridley Fight): This is a short but intense remix of the most common boss battle theme heard throughout the Metroid series. The site specifically connects this to Ridley, raising rumors as to whether Ridley will be a playable character, or more of a "background character" like Kraid was in Melee.
- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Medley: This is a medley of various songs heard in the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and the ones heard in the incomplete clip provided are, in order, the "Song of Storms", "Epona's Song", "Song of Time", "Saria's Song", and "Zelda's Lullaby", all of which Link can play on the eponymous Ocarina in the N64 game.
- Star Fox: Space Armada: This is a remix of, what Sakurai claims, to be part of the music from the Corneria stage in Super Smash Bros. Melee. Sakurai notes the intensity of the music, as it conveys the atmosphere of an epic showdown. It is shown to play on Lylat Cruise in the demo shown at E For All.
- Kid Icarus: The Underworld: An orchestrated medley of music from Kid Icarus, beginning with one verse of the title screen jingle, then proceeding with the first stage theme from the game, ending with the high-pitched theme heard when Pit is spotted by a Grim Reaper enemy followed by the game over jingle. It is heard in the Pit's Descent trailer on the official site, which is a video of an ingame cutscene. It is unknown if it is played elsewhere.
- Animal Crossing: Go K.K. Rider!: A remix of Go K.K. Rider!, one of the songs played by K.K. Slider in Animal Crossing games. It will be played on the Smashville stage.
- My Music: Although this update brings no music in itself, it describes the My Music feature and reveals the titles of eight new songs.
- Pokémon: Pokémon Gym/Evolution: A remix of the "Pokémon Gym" theme, accompanied by the "Evolution" theme from the Pokémon series of games. It is known to play at the Pokémon Stadium 2 stage.
- Super Smash Bros. Brawl: Main Theme: Simply a repost of the game's main theme song from the preview site.
- Metal Gear Solid: MGS4 Love Theme (Smash Bros. Brawl Version): A version of the Love Theme from the upcoming Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots made for Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The arrangement was handled by staff from Konami's Metal Gear sound team.
- WarioWare: Ashley's Theme: A music file which is a fully vocalized version of the theme song for the young witch character Ashley in WarioWare: Touched!. This is most likely one of the songs for the WarioWare stage. This song has different-language vocals for the different-language versions of the game.
- Fire Emblem: Fire Emblem Theme: An orchestrated version of the Fire Emblem theme, complete with Latin lyrics.
Misc.
- At the end of the first trailer, when Snake is revealed, the Metal Gear Solid Game Over jingle is played. In addition, a remixed version of the "Encounter" music was used in the Snake Joins the Brawl! update. While the Encounter music could be an alternate theme for the Shadow Moses Island stage and the jingle could be Snake's victory theme, it is unknown if either of these are actually used in the game.
- At the end of the second trailer when Fox McCloud is revealed, a segment of Corneria from Melee can be heard. It is unknown if this will be in the game.
- The Japanese section of the old Dojo!! site claimed that Meta Knight's victory theme would be a rock version of Kirby's. This was later confirmed in a video featuring Sonic and Meta Knight in a Sudden Death match.
- The My Music update has revealed the following song titles for the Delfino Plaza: "Delfino Plaza", "Castle Music/Fortress Boss", "Ending/Title Screen" (from Super Mario World), and the main theme for New Super Mario Bros. For Bridge of Eldin: "Title" (from The Legend of Zelda), "Main Theme" (from The Legend of Zelda), "The Dark World", and "The Hidden Mountains and Forests". These are not yet heard as of now.
- Smash Bros. DOJO!! released a song from the Japan-only cooking game, Shaberu! DS Oryouri NAVI along with the confirmation of Kirby's Final Smash. It's currently unknown if this song will be only be used in the Japanese version of Brawl or not, as it was only released on the Japanese version of Smash Bros DOJO!!
- During the trailer that introduced Sonic, Live and Learn, the main theme song from Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, with the vocals by Crush 40, can be heard.
- In the PictoChat stage update, the my music section contains the Wii Shop Channel music, the Mii Channel music and Brain Age music for this stage. It also features a supposedly original track called PictoChat.
- The Stage Builder update revealed that a Donkey Kong song titled Bramble Blast would play, as well as a MOTHER song called Snowman.
- During the demo play at E for All, people have confirmed the music for the different stages in the demo; the Norfair stage has a remix of the Super Metroid ending, the Castle Siege stage has a remix of the Fire Emblem main theme, and the Battleship Halberd has music from the "Revenge of Meta Knight" game from Kirby Super Star.
