Jake plays Steve in a way that is different from most other Steves. While he still has to mine for resources and materials, he puts them to good use by setting up walls and blocks to make crafty, tricky, and unpredictable approaches. His use of Steve's down air anvil as an out of shield option and as a way to stall so his landing won't get punished. Jake is also known for his use of TNT as a way to not only ledgetrap his opponent but to condition them to respect the explosive before he does the down smash buffer air dodge tech on TNT. Jake also plays semi-aggressively as he chooses to approach his opponent more than run away from him as he uses Steve's unique approach tools such as minecart for a surprise burst option or back air and forward air to wall out his opponent. Jake is also notable for using Steve's diamond sword forward smash as a KO option or conditioning tool due to how safe and how low risk it has. Fans have dubbed Steve's diamond f smash "Jake Smash."
However, when Jake is put at a disadvantage, he has predictable habits that make him prone to punishment. For example, his down air can be called out by opponents awaiting his landing. In addition, another habit he has is using minecart out of the corner or when he's being pressured, enabling opponents to hit him out of it or to counterattack. For example, in his set with {{Sm|Ned}} at {{Trn|InfinityCON Tally 2021}}, most of his minecarts have been punished by {{SSBU|Sephiroth}}'s Scintilla counter to KO him at early percentages. These habits have led to him being prone to comebacks or matchup knowledge by other top players, such as {{Sm|Cosmos}}, {{Sm|Kola}}, and {{Sm|Zomba}}, in recent times.

For example, in his set with Ned at InfinityCON Tally 2021, most of his minecarts have been punished by Sephiroth's Scintilla counter to KO him at early percentages. These habits have led to him being prone to comebacks or matchup knowledge by other top players, such as Cosmos, Kola, and Zomba, in recent times.
