Terra (テラ, Terra) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Like with the Pokémon Trainer's Pokémon and Pyra/Mythra, Terra shares his character slot with Aqua and Ventus as a tag-team fighter. Along with Aqua and Ventus as well as Sora, Roxas and Riku, he was announced as a surprise DLC fighter as part of the KINGDOM HEARTS Bonus Fighters Pass on April 1, 2021. Terra is classified as Fighter #91.
Ryōtarō Okiayu and Jason Dohring reprise their roles as Terra in Japanese and English, respectively, with new voice clips.
Known information
- Terra is tied to Aqua and Ventus as a three-in-one fighter, similar to Pokémon Trainer. Each member of the trio can swap out quickly using their shared down special move, Teleporter.
- Terra has been described as the "heavy hitter" of the trio similar to Charizard's role within Pokémon Trainer's team. He combines traits of Charizard and Pyra within their respective teams, having very strong disjointed attacks and being a semi-super-heavyweight (sharing his weight with Piranha Plant) but having low mobility and poor combo potential.
Moveset
- Teleporter - Terra's down special move, shared with Aqua and Ventus, where he will manifest a teleporter similar to those seen in the Mirage Arena and quickly warp out of battle, with Aqua immediately warping in.
- Trinity Limit - Terra's shared Final Smash with Terra and Ventus, where he will raise his Keyblade and generate a magical circle under his feet. If the move connects, Aqua and Ventus will enter the battle, and all three will raise their Keyblades, proclaiming "Light!" in unison, and generate a large orb of light above their heads that explodes causes immense damage and knockback.
Classic Mode: A Link to the Future
Terra/Aqua/Ventus' Classic Mode reflects the major boss battles of their original appearance in Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep. It is unique in that during most stages, the player is locked into playing as one of the three Keyblade wielders unless noted otherwise. Pressing Y on the character select screen to choose one of the three only has an effect at two points: which character the player begins with during stage 4 (the Galleom battle), and which character is present during the credits minigame.
Round | Opponent | Stage | Music | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Giant R.O.B. | Castle Siege (indoor area) | The Tumbling | Battle is a reference to the Wheel Master boss fight in Enchanted Dominion. Player is locked to Terra. |
2 | Giant Pac-Man | Luigi's Mansion | Extreme Encounters | Battle is a reference to the Cursed Coach boss fight near the Castle of Dreams. Player is locked to Aqua. |
3 | Giant Ivysaur | Reset Bomb Forest | Shrouding Dark Cloud | Battle is a reference to the Mad Treant boss fight in Dwarf Woodlands. Player is locked to Ventus. |
4 | Galleom | Base | Unforgettable | Reference to the Trinity Armor boss fight in Radiant Garden. Player can switch freely between Terra, Aqua and Ventus. |
5 | Pikachu | Frigate Orpheon | Vim & Vigor | Reference to the Experiment 221 (Sparky) boss fight in Deep Space. Player is locked to Terra. |
6 | Sora | Station of Awakening | Rage Awakened | Reference to the recurring battles against Vanitas in both Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep and Kingdom Hearts III, as seen with Sora's palette swap. Player is locked to Ventus. |
Bonus Stage | ||||
Final | Ganondorf | Final Destination | Dark Domination | Reference to the recurring battles against Master Xehanort, Terra-Xehanort and No Heart in both Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep and Kingdom Hearts III. Player is locked to Aqua, but has CPU-controlled Terra and Ventus as allies during the fight (using the same palette swaps they used in previous stages). |
Credits roll after completing Classic Mode. Completing it as Terra/Aqua/Ventus has Don't Think Twice accompany the credits.
Trivia
- Terra/Aqua/Ventus are the third transforming character to be added to Ultimate, after Pokémon Trainer and Pyra/Mythra.
- Also like Pokémon Trainer and unlike Pyra/Mythra, Terra/Aqua/Ventus share a Final Smash directly based on Trinity Limit - specifically, its usage in Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep if all three are in battle together during its use. This is a rare occurrence in-game, and can only happen during the Trinity Armor boss battle or in the Mirage Arena (PSP versions only).
- Terra/Aqua/Ventus, along with Sora, Roxas and Riku, mark the first time that multiple fighters aside from Echo Fighters have been added from a third-party universe all at the same time(although Roxas is an Echo Fighter of Sora).
- Comparisons with Pokémon Trainer and Pyra/Mythra:
- Terra, Aqua and Ventus have their own separate announcer calls used on the character selection screen and their victory poses. Unlike with the actual Trainer or Rex, no fourth entity is present in battle at any point.
- Like with Pyra/Mythra, Terra, Aqua and Ventus are all shown on the versus splash screen, though higher numbers of players will only show the one in front instead.
- Like with Pokémon Trainer, Terra's, Aqua's and Ventus' Fighter Spirits are all obtained at the same time when clearing their Classic Mode. However, each of the three has an alternate "Armored" Fighter Spirit wearing Keyblade Armor (corresponding to their eighth palette swap) that can be purchased in the in-game shop.
- Like with Pyra and Mythra, swapping between the three changes the stock icon to the one currently being used. With Pokémon Trainer, this can only be done through hacks.
