Pound is a tournament series initially held on a yearly basis, mainly in Maryland or Virginia. The first tournament in the series was held in January of 2006 and was organized and founded by Chinesah. The tournament organizer and owner for all subsequent Pound tournaments until Pound V.5 has been Plank, though Tantalus became a TO alongside Plank starting with Pound 4. JCaesar and Nintendude helped Plank and Tantalus with tournament organizing at Pound V.5 and Pound 2016 respectively. The tournament was originally exclusively for Melee, but this exclusivity ended in Pound 4 with the introduction of Brawl. The series is now own and ran by VGBC.
At Pound V, Plank was unable to pay most of the top placing players due to financial issues he came across while hosting the tournament.[1] This resulted in Plank being placed on the Smashboards Tournament Organizer blacklist[2] and a 2 and a half year hiatus of the Pound series until Pound V.5, which occurred on November 9th, 2013. It wasn't until November 18th, 2015 that Plank finally paid off the top placing players of Pound V, and he was removed from the Smashboards Tournament Organizer blacklist. After another hiatus, the Pound series returned in 2016 with Pound 2016, the first mainline tournament since 2011. Pound 2016 ended up being the 12th largest Smash 4 tournament, the 11th largest Melee tournament, and the 10th largest Smash 64 tournament with 1610 overall entrants.
On December 12th, 2016, Tantalus announced that he and the other tournament organizers had made the decision to cancel Pound 2017. This is due to the fact that the Pound 2016 venue, Ritz-Carlton in Tyson's Corner, was too small for the event and the tournament organizers could not find a larger venue for Pound 2017.[3]
On February 24th, 2018, VGBC announced Pound Underground, being held on May 12th-13th, 2018. [4]
On December 31st, 2019, VGBC announced Pound 2020, being held on April 3rd-5th, 2020. [5]
