The Slime (スライム, Slime) is a common enemy in the Dragon Quest series, also serving as a recurring mascot.
Origin
In the Dragon Quest games, Slimes are often the first monster that players come across. They are typically the weakest monster, and can be taken down with ease, as they lack any real offensive abilities. Other variations of Slime exist, such as She-Slime (which, despite its name, is not necessarily female) and the elusive Metal Slime. In later games, such as Dragon Quest IX, there are special Slimes that—though often unassuming—can merge with or stack onto other Slimes, creating a new type of Slime, such as a King Slime or a Slime Stack.
As the series progressed, Slimes grew popular among fans, becoming an icon of the franchise and even starring in spin-off titles such as Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime. Certain games include Slimes as companions with their own personality and dialogue. In localized titles, they often use slime-related puns or phrases: for example, "gooman" instead of "human", "slime" instead of "time", "acrooze" instead of "accrue", or simply saying "slurp" or "goo" as a verbal tic.
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Slimes appear in Ultimate, along with the Hero, as part of the Dragon Quest series' representation through downloadable content. In particular, a Slime appears to be part of the Hero's moveset, presumably being summoned through his taunts. Multiple Slimes also appear on the Dragon Quest stage, Yggdrasil's Altar, as well as the Hero's reveal trailer. The Hero's alternate costumes based on his Dragon Quest IV incarnation also have a Slime-themed earring on their left ear like in Solo's original artwork. The orange variation (based on the Hero from the first Dragon Quest) features a Metal Slime instead of the original blue Slime.

Trivia
- Slime enemies are commonly featured in other fantasy-inspired series, including some featured in Super Smash Bros.
- In The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, using Magic Powder on certain enemies will turn them into a Slime. Rather than the famous blue color, these Slimes instead appear greenish-orange, more closely resembling an onion.
- In the Namco arcade game The Tower of Druaga, which predates the original Dragon Quest by two years, Slimes appear as a common foe. These Slimes are simple faceless blobs, typically green in color, and much more nondescript than the iconic Dragon Quest design.
- Slime previously appeared alongside Mario characters in Itadaki Street DS and Fortune Street, as well as Final Fantasy characters in Mario Sports Mix.
- Slime is the third non-playable character to appear in the panoramic banner, following Mr. Saturn and Morgana.
- Despite Slimes being the series mascot for Dragon Quest they are not used as the series symbol in Smash Bros.
