As a Poké Ball Pokémon

Clefairy makes its debut in the Super Smash Bros. series as one of the thirteen Poké Ball Pokémon that appear in the original game. When summoned, Clefairy will use Metronome, an attack that allows it to use the special attack of a random Poké Ball Pokémon (Mew included). Clefairy's attack will not harm the summoner.

As a Poké Ball Pokémon

Clefairy returns in Super Smash Bros. Melee with an altered form of its Metronome attack. The attacks that can be performed using the move are now limited to one of four:

  • Gust: Any character caught in the whirlwind will take heavy amount of damage, but not enough to KO them.
  • Fire Spin: This attack burns the ground around Clefairy, damaging any opponent caught in it.
  • Waterfall: This attacks has high vertical knockback, large range, and hits many times; Star KOing a character.
  • Self-Destruct: This attack is similar to Electrode's Explosion attack. Any character caught in the blast radius will take damage.

As in the original, the summoner is immune to damage from its attacks.

Origin

Clefairy is a Fairy-type (Normal-type prior to Generation VI) Pokémon introduced in Generation I. It is very rare, appearing with low probability and only in few areas, most of which are mountainous or thematically connected to meteors. It evolves into Clefable using a Moon Stone, and gained the baby form Cleffa in Generation II.

Metronome is a very peculiar move naturally available to very few Pokémon, including Clefairy: when selected, it allows the user to perform a move chosen randomly among almost all the moves existing in the game.

Trivia

  • If a down throw is used inside Clefairy's Gust attack the characters will freeze, due to gust trapping the opponent, making neither move.
