You can do another gesture that tells another player that you want fight them. For example, I was doing online Brawl with random people. There were 4 player, including myself. There were two guys fighting 1-on-1, and there one player that wasn't doing anything, so I did the gesture that tells him that I want to fight him, he responded and fought each other.
