link from old wiki
Should we have a link to here from the old wiki? Mr. Anon 00:10, 1 October 2010 (EDT)
- We aren't dicthing the old wiki. This shouldn't replace Wikia's version.--MegaTron1XD 00:11, 1 October 2010 (EDT)
- Actually, we are pretty much ditching the old wiki; the entire active administration has made the switch. I was planning to put a big "SmashWiki has relocated" notice up saying that while SmashWikia will continue to exist, SmashWiki will be the primary Smash Bros. wiki from now on. Besides, how else are we going to get any traffic at first? Toomai Glittershine 10:58, 1 October 2010 (EDT)
- Let's get the bulk of the content over before we invite the masses to join us. Miles (talk) 20:36, 1 October 2010 (EDT)
- What I was asking is a shortcut from Smashwiki to here. Whenever I google "Smashwiki" I end up in the wikia one. I think we should have a link from there to here and vice versa. Mr. Anon 22:39, 1 October 2010 (EDT)

- Hey, I've contributed to the original SmashWiki in the past, and have been with NIWA lately, and want to help move stuff. So, if you just tell me to do something, I'll happily help. :D Supernicknobros (talk) 15:45, 2 October 2010 (EDT)
- List of stuff to do. Glad to have you around to help. ^_^ Doctor Pain 99 (CTE) 16:15, 2 October 2010 (EDT)
- Wikia will probably not allow you to have a link redirecting users to other wikis. They will probably block anyone who tries to add one. Solar Dragon (talk) 17:16, 2 October 2010 (EDT)
- Pikipedia does. Doctor Pain 99 (CTE) 17:35, 2 October 2010 (EDT)
- Ok, so I want to move images. The names stay the same when i re-upload it right? just making sure. :) Supernicknobros (talk) 17:49, 2 October 2010 (EDT)
- If you want a link to the old smashwiki, here it is. http://super-smash-bros.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page hoped that helps! Mesuxelf (talk) 15:38, 8 October 2010 (EDT)
- No, we want a link from smashwikia, since googling "smashwiki" leads you there. Mr. Anon (talk) 16:13, 8 October 2010 (EDT)
- Can I help upload Controler images?--Tabuu123 (talk) 17:49, 8 October 2010 (EDT)
- I think the Wikia SmashWiki needs a rename if it is possible to help search engines direct users here instead of the old SmashWiki. I don't know if that will work but if it wouldn't or doesn't, contact search engines to make the change. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) 01:13, 5 December 2010 (EST)
- Would have been better if you started a new section for something like that. Besides, most people who go to the old one see the sitenotice and if they read it, they'd go here instead and be a loyal follower.--MegaTron1XD 01:14, 5 December 2010 (EST)
- Shouldn't we just archive the old site or something so that way people will come here? --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) 21:09, 5 December 2010 (EST)

I just realized a way to stop smashwikia from being overrun by vandals: use that Protectsite tool that wikia gave us in the first place. Anyone think we should do this? Mr. Anon (talk) 19:18, 8 October 2010 (EDT)
- You realize that all of us will check in every now and then. We didn't recieve that many vandilism to start with.--MegaTron1XD 21:29, 8 October 2010 (EDT)
- What do you mean a link FROM smashwiki? Mesuxelf (talk) 09:49, 9 October 2010 (EDT)
Is this us?
Are we the middle one here? Miles (talk) 19:13, 8 October 2010 (EDT)
- As far as I'm aware that was put up before this wiki was, so unlikely. Toomai Glittershine 19:15, 8 October 2010 (EDT)
- Just out of interest, does anyone know the current situation between this wiki and N.I.W.A. (why is it not mentioned on the N.I.W.A. site)?
Evening out the columns
I've figured out how to adjust the widths of the two columns, but not move the right one to the left after I shorten the left one and widen the right. Help? Miles (talk) 17:16, 9 October 2010 (EDT)
SmashWikia
Egad! What has happened there? Is this Wikia's new skin? I was going there to find an image that needed to be uploaded here, and it took me forever just to find recent changes! Mr. Anon (talk) 22:58, 20 October 2010 (EDT)
- So useless a post. Of course its Wikia's new skin. Go to preferences and change it. Do not say that since we can do that, we should move back. I belive you have seen the benefits.--MegaTron1XD 10:32, 21 October 2010 (EDT)
NIWA
Now that you guys are independent and since the Super Smash Bros. series is part of Nintendo. I think it'd be great for you guys to join NIWA!! I'm not sure how it works, but the website is right here -->[1] --99.163.246.132 16:47, 21 October 2010 (EDT)
- Uh... they're hosting this domain. We're just not officially listed yet because we're still finishing technical stuff from the move. Miles (talk) 17:00, 21 October 2010 (EDT)
NIWA Info
NIWA is requesting a site blurb for here and a contact email for here. So let me know what you want these things to be or I'll just make something up! --Porplemontage (talk) 16:31, 28 October 2010 (EDT)
- Have this for a blurb:
Originally two seperate wikis (one on SmashBoards, the other on Wikia), SmashWiki as we know it was formed out of a merge on February 29th, 2008, becoming independent on September 28, 2010. SmashWiki is the premier source of Smash Bros. information, from simple tidbits to detailed mechanics, and also touches on the origins of its wealth of content from its sibling franchises.
- Users who disagree with this blurb, say so before it's too late.
- As for a contact e-mail, I guess you can use mine, since I'm the most active bureaucrat: toomai{underscore}glittershine[at]yahoo<dot>ca. Toomai Glittershine 17:11, 28 October 2010 (EDT)
- editconflict
- "SmashWiki was originally a merger between SmashWiki hosted by SmashBoards and Super Smash Bros. Wiki at Wikia. SmashWiki is dedicated to being the most complete, thorough, and dynamic repository of information relating to the Super Smash Bros. series. SmashWiki's editors are excited to join the NIWA community and are always looking for help. If you're interested in Smash, SmashWiki is the place to be!"
- How's that for a blurb (written in like 45 seconds + copypasta from SmashWiki:About, but I think it works okay)?
- As for an email, I have just registered smashwikidian@gmail.com. It will be available to all the site's admins. Miles (talk) 17:17, 28 October 2010 (EDT)
- Personally, I can't stand things with this kind of overeager-to-please tone. :/ Toomai Glittershine 17:25, 28 October 2010 (EDT)
I think the blurb Toomai wrote is better, and I see nothing wrong with the email. Omega Tyrant 19:53, 28 October 2010 (EDT)
- My blurb is terrible, use Toomai's. And yes the email's good. (Mods beyond myself and Toomai: if you want this email's login info, ask me.) Miles (talk) 19:57, 28 October 2010 (EDT)
You guys gunna add that little box all the other NIWA wikis have at the bottom? All the other niwa wikis have them, they're very useful for quick back-and-forth mainpage linking, and interwiki stuff. There's Wikirby's, bottom of that page, bottom of that page so on and so forth. Also you guys should be on the hub tomorrow (:. Then you'll finally be niwa members. Any of your staff I suggest creating an account on the forums. They'd have access to the Staff Boards where you can actually voice things out and have a better say on niwa happenings Malake256 (talk) 23:50, 28 October 2010 (EDT)
Add Smash Arena/IRC links?
Considering how there is/will be a new user influx, how about putting Template:SA Box and/or something about SW:IRC on the main page somewhere? Since we're probably one of the stiffer wikis in terms of talk page and forum rules, it'll lift most opinions of us being 100% srs bsns. Toomai Glittershine 11:39, 30 October 2010 (EDT)
- Support I get rather bored later on when everyone's off. I'm not sure if this is the opinion you want though.--MegaTron1XD 11:41, 30 October 2010 (EDT)
Support I support as the IRC should have a link somewhere were new users are likely to see it, and the Smash Arena box would be appealing to new users, without detracting from the main page. Omega Tyrant 11:54, 30 October 2010 (EDT)
Support As above. Mr. Anon (talk) 12:44, 30 October 2010 (EDT)
Partial Support: pro-IRC (linking to SW:IRC, that is), neutral-leaning against SA. Miles (talk) 16:04, 30 October 2010 (EDT)
Hey, it's SmashWiki!
A lot changes in two years. Is there any moving-truck stuff that still needs to be done? I'm happy to help. Not sure I'm motivated enough for much mainspace editing but I'll lend a hand in back-end as long as I'm interested. – MaskedMarth (t c) 11:43, 7 November 2010 (EST)
- I'm pretty sure most of the moving stuff has been done by this point, but help (especially from someone with such experience!) is greatly appreciated. Good to see you back! Miles (talk) 11:45, 7 November 2010 (EST)
- Cool. This place looks much cleaner than Wikia, I've noticed. Good move. I can get working on the things mentioned in the community portal and the projects; is there anything else that needs particular attention? – MaskedMarth (t c) 12:11, 7 November 2010 (EST)
- There's a load of good-quality Brawl trophy images to be cropped, saved as PNG with better names and uploaded that are linked here: Talk:List_of_SSBB_trophies#Which_background.3F
- [All the Melee trophies, and the Zelda Brawl ones, have been uploaded already - although some of the Melee ones could do with being recropped - but the rest of the Brawl ones need done] - Reboot (talk) 02:37, 5 December 2010 (EST)
Anti-Wikia Skin Alliance newsletter
The Anti Wikia Skin Alliance Newsletter | |||||||||||||||||||
Issue 1 (December 2010) | |||||||||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
TALK | MOVING | MOVED | HELP | ATTACKS | DOI | WHY |
Hello former wikia members. Editors at the Anti-wikia skin alliance wanted to begin a newsletter to help build a bridge to the former wikias about what is currently happening on Wikia and what is going on at the Anti-wikia skin alliance.
- 45 wikias have left wikia
As of December 17, 2010, an incredible Forty-five wikias with 7114 editors have signed the moved page stating they have left wikia. Other wikias are currently in the process of deciding whether to leave. In response, wikia has desysopped at least 38 administrators and banned 10, usually indefinitely. In a meeting with Wikia staff member Sannse reportedly said "Wikia underestimated the negative response to Oasis..."
- Monaco available
Please let your friends who remained on wikia know that:
- Wikifarm Shoutwiki has stated that Monaco would be available by the end of the year on Shoutwiki.
- Editor Dantman has created the Monaco skin which can be installed on your wikia in 10 minutes. Dantman states this is not a complete skin. It is missing a few features. But it is Monaco.
- Javascript code to redirect your wikia site
This code redirects your Wikia site to a different URL address. :
- if ( wgUserGroups === null || typeof( wgUserGroups ) != null && wgUserGroups.join(' ').indexOf( 'staff' ) == -1 && wgUserGroups.join(' ').indexOf( 'helper' ) == -1 && wgUserGroups.join(' ').indexOf( 'vstf' ) == -1 && wgUserGroups.join(' ').indexOf( 'sysop' ) == -1 && wgUserGroups.join(' ').indexOf( 'bureaucrat' ) == -1 ) { window.location = 'http://URLofYourNewWiki.example.com/wiki/' + wgPageName;
- }
- Warning, you will be banned if you add this code to your wikia.
- Help other wikis
If you have technical skills many wikis could use your help. For example, the new Monaco skin's "more" button does not work because none of the javascript has been ported. Other wikis who bravely left wikia are sorely in need of technical assistance. If you can volunteer your time, please sign up here.
If you need technical assistance, please explain your problem here.
- Assistance with the next newsletter
We would like some help with the next newsletter. We would like to have an interview next time and we are looking for editors who would like to write a regular column. If you are interested, please see here.
Anno1404 (talk) 02:09, 18 December 2010 (EST)
- What exactly did we do to deserve this crap being plopped here? Where do we go to "unsubscribe" or whatever? Toomai Glittershine 07:35, 18 December 2010 (EST)
Crew namespace
Perhaps we should have an entire namespace for crews, like we have for smashers. That way, they become more organized. Mr. Anon (talk) 21:23, 22 December 2010 (EST)
- How many crew pages are there? Toomai Glittershine 21:23, 22 December 2010 (EST)
- Wow, that was a fast response. I haven't counted how many crew pages there are, mostly because they're not organized very well. However, I know that there must be quite a lot, since I often reach a crew page when I hit random page. Mr. Anon (talk) 21:29, 22 December 2010 (EST)
- Looking at comes up with 81 articles. Is that enough for a namespace? Mr. Anon (talk) 21:31, 22 December 2010 (EST)
- Why not just incorporate them and tournaments into the Smasher:* namespace? (Smashers, Crews of Smashers, Tournaments for Smashers. Avoids the current inter-namespace fragmentation) - Reboot (talk) 00:13, 27 December 2010 (EST)
- Good idea. Part of my reasoning was that crew and tournament pages are kind of similar to smasher pages in that they depart from the usual encyclopedic style. Mr. Anon (talk) 00:21, 27 December 2010 (EST)
- Why not just incorporate them and tournaments into the Smasher:* namespace? (Smashers, Crews of Smashers, Tournaments for Smashers. Avoids the current inter-namespace fragmentation) - Reboot (talk) 00:13, 27 December 2010 (EST)
Links to other wikis
I have kept quiet about this for some time now, because of the then-rapid surge of edits that added in links to other wikis. I didn't want to speak up then, because I didn't want people to feel that I wanted them to undo all of the hard work they just did. However, today I looked at a couple of our fellow NIWA wiki's; specifically Wikirby and Wikibound. For a while, I have objected to the idea of linking to other NIWA wiki's, mainly because of the fact that it appears that we're advertising them. However, I saw that the intent was that it allows users to observe a more descriptive article about something that we really don't need to cover. When I looked at Wikirby and Wikibound, I realized that this won't hold up. Many of their articles are even worse than that of their wikia counterparts, some even worse than our versions. Even with other wikis, I view Zeldapedia as a better source than Zelda wiki, as with Wikitroid to the Metroid wiki. In fact, the only NIWA wiki (other than us, of course) that I personally view as better than any of its wikia counterparts is the Super Mario wiki. As for the other wiki's, however, I see no reason to simply change any links to a wikia to a NIWA wiki simply because of our anti-wikia sentiment. Mr. Anon (talk) 23:43, 26 December 2010 (EST)
- Not that I have any strong opinions on this atm, but Bulbapedia is certainly vastly superior to the Pokemon Wiki on Wikia, so the Super Mario Wiki is not the only other superior NIWA (I could also attest that the NIWA DK Wiki is superior to its Wikia counterpart). As for your other statement, an anti-Wikia sentiment isn't the only reason, it's to help our NIWA allies. As you mentioned, several of the NIWA Wikis are lacking substantial information, and linking to them instead of the Wikia counterparts helps them out, which is one of the purposes of NIWA; for fellow NIWA Wikis to help each other out. Omega Tyrant 00:10, 27 December 2010 (EST)
- Oops, I missed Bulbapedia, but my point still stands; the purpose of Smashwiki is not to "help out" other wikis, but instead provide visitors with good information regarding whatever they are looking up. So it is better to link to the wiki that is more informative than the wiki less informative, even if the former is not part of wikia. You say that the point is to help out other wikis, but how do you know that a user visiting will always try to edit? Wikirby, for example, has had no editors in the last 3 days, and won't even allow people to get an account anymore. Also, part of my point is that we shouldn't just adverstise other NIWA wikis simply because they are part of NIWA. I believe the NIWA "ambassator" guy said that the wikis here are supposed to be independant, and that we don't have to act like we are owned by NIWA. That was part of the reason why we left Wikia in the first place. Mr. Anon (talk) 00:19, 27 December 2010 (EST)
- There's a bit of both - yes, the ultimate aim is to give a place to read about the out-of-scope stuff for SSB characters; but there IS an element of advertising partners and allies - which should, of course, be reciprocal when appropriate - Zelda Wiki definitely has "See SmashWiki's article on X for more information" on their Super Smash Bros. sections. As a result, it's not purely selfless - Google applies a heavy duplicate content penalty to "new" sites that copy information from other sites, and we need all the help we can get to overcome that. I just searched for "Super Smash Bros. wiki", and we're below not just SmashWikia, but also Mario Wiki [NIWA], Zelda Wiki [NIWA], StrategyWiki [NIWA], an IGN wiki and a frankly hopeless Neoseeker SSB wiki.
- And on other NIWA wikis... well, Lylat Wiki's in the process of incorporating the ex-wikia "Arwingpedia" (which jumped ship like this wiki did, but decided to merge with another wiki in the same field rather than go it alone). Once that's done, it should definitely be superior-by-definition to the vestigial Starfox Wikia. - Reboot (talk) 00:36, 27 December 2010 (EST)

- the purpose of Smashwiki is not to "help out" other wikis, but instead provide visitors with good information regarding whatever they are looking up
- There is nothing of the SmashWiki's "purpose" that has no intent of helping developing allied Wikis.
- You say that the point is to help out other wikis, but how do you know that a user visiting will always try to edit?
- This is an irrelevant point. It's already known that the majority of those who visit a Wiki will never make an edit, but we give them the option to. With that logic, why advertise ourselves anywhere, or even give the option to edit, if we assume no one will help our Wiki out? But with an increase of visitors, the chances of a productive edit being made increases, and providing a link to fellow NIWA Wikis increases the chances of them getting productive edits. What if a Kirby/Smash Bros. enthusiast visits our Wiki, reads Kirby's character article to then follow the link to WiKirby, and notice the information missing that they know and are willing to supply? Was our link to WiKirby detrimental then, especially when it takes only one user to massively benefit a Wiki?
- Also, part of my point is that we shouldn't just adverstise other NIWA wikis simply because they are part of NIWA. I believe the NIWA "ambassator" guy said that the wikis here are supposed to be independant, and that we don't have to act like we are owned by NIWA.
- In case you didn't realise, the "A" in NIWA stands for Alliance. As in, yes we are independent Wikis not own by a higher organisation, but we are Allies. As such, we help them, and they help us back. It's the basic concept of an alliance.
