The following is a list of characters who are playable in Smash without modding or glitches by some kind of technicality or close proximity.

Nana is typically controlled by an AI designed to replicate a player's moves imperfectly, however, some alternate costumes put her in the lead.
Red and green ducks
The other two ducks are featured as alts

Original characters
Dark Fox, Falco, and Wolf
Dark Fox is an official title from Sakurai, wheras Falco and Wolf's equivalents are simply implied.
Dark Pit (Brawl)
Described by Sakurai as "fallen angel", and a likely inspiration or early iteration for Dark Pit. This alternate costume returns, modified, after Dark Pit's addition
Light Dark Pit

Non-specific alt costumes
Ethnic characters
The following characters have alternate costumes that make them appear to be a different ethnicity, it can be reasonably assumed these are seperate characters, as the alternative would be offensive.
Also of note is that, in Brawl, there exists an alternate costume for Olimar with a foggy helmet, that some have interpreted as being a dark-skinned Olimar.
Gender variance
The following characters have alternate costumes that swap their gender.
It should be noted that Corrin and Byleth's trailers both imply that their respective subjects are genderfluid in the context of Smash, which may or may not apply to other characters.

Piranhacus Giganticus
Piranhacus Giganticus can be accessed through Super Mushroom, a dud Lightning Bolt, or Special Smash

Both forms can be accessed through the Metal Box or Special Smash starting in Melee.
Stanley the Bugman
Mr. Game & Watch transforms into Stanley for his jab in Ultimate
World of Light
See Spirits with overworld effects. The only spirits featured in this article that will be listed here are ones that summon or function as some kind of vehicle.
Also note that, per the lore of World of Light, it could be argued that all Primary spirits are playable through possession.

Slippy Toad
Slippy Toad can be used to repair the Great Fox, it is ambigious whether he or the player's character is piloting the ship.
Other

Arsène will follow Joker's movements when summoned with Rebellion Gauge.
Coin Launcher
The Coin Launcher itself is playable. It is a turret with an unknown pilot.
Cranky Kong
Smash composites elements together from earlier and later Donkey Kong games, making the prospect of DK in Smash being Cranky Kong at least feasible. Some alternate costumes also resemble the arcade DK.
