The following is a list of characters who are playable in Smash without modding or glitches by some kind of technicality or close proximity.

Major WIP, I plan to add infoboxes and descriptions gradually, but for now the emphasis is on explanations of this status.

Dark Link (Twilight Princess)[edit]

Original character. Removed through character redesign.

Ditto[edit]

Implied to be playable in Tournament mode in Melee, on virtue of it being the symbol of Random select

Ganondorf (Twilight Princess)[edit]

Removed through character redesign.

Kusa-mochi Kirby[edit]

Officially titled by Sakurai

Note that Kusa-mochi Kirby is not technically cut, a new green Kirby alt with orange feet was added in Brawl - Kusa-mochi Kirby is only placed here due to Green Kirby appearing later on the list.

Link (Ocarina of Time)[edit]

Mega Charizard X[edit]

Present as a Final Smash in Smash 4.

Blood Falcon[edit]

One of Captain Falcon's alternate costume is an extremely close proximity.

Bowser's Brother[edit]

One of Bowser's alternate costumes is referred to as such in the Tips.

Claus[edit]

One of Lucas alternate costume is an extremely close proximity.

Dark Link (Ocarina of Time)[edit]

Alternate costume introduced for Young Link in Ultimate, though Dark Link only appears as an adult in Ocarina.

Dark Meta Knight[edit]

One of Meta Knight's alternate costume is an extremely close proximity.

Donald Duck[edit]

Sora's Wisdom form is him fused with Donald.

The Four Swords[edit]

Toon Link's alternate costumes appear to be these characters

Galacta Knight[edit]

One of Meta Knight's alternate costume is an extremely close proximity.

Goofy[edit]

Sora's Valor form is him fused with Goofy.

Keeby, Blue Kirby, and Red Kirby[edit]

Blue Kirby and Red Kirby are featured as close-proximity alts for Kirby, while Keeby has been officially stated to be the yellow Kirby's identity by Sakurai

Nana[edit]

Nana is typically controlled by an AI designed to replicate a player's moves imperfectly, however, some alternate costumes put her in the lead.

Wii Fit U Trainer[edit]

Wii Fit Trainer has a green alternate costume strongly resembling the Wii Fit U Trainer.

Yoshi colors[edit]

Many of Yoshi's colors are featured as alts, notably Black Yoshi in Smash 4, who is given individuality as a secret character with slightly distinct abilities in Yoshi's Story.

Dark Fox, Falco, and Wolf[edit]

Dark Fox is an official title from Sakurai, wheras Falco and Wolf's equivalents are simply implied.

Dark Pit (Brawl)[edit]

Described by Sakurai as "fallen angel", and a likely inspiration or early iteration for Dark Pit. This alternate costume returns, modified, after Dark Pit's addition

Light Dark Pit[edit]

Not official, but strongly implied as an alternate costume.

Dark Toon Link[edit]

Consistent alternate costume since Brawl

Titled by Sakurai. Ambigious as to whether this individual would be someone else or simply a nickname Luigi while he is wearing pink.

Non-specific alt costumes[edit]

Ethnic characters[edit]

The following characters have alternate costumes that make them appear to be a different ethnicity, it can be reasonably assumed these are seperate characters, as the alternative would be offensive.

Also of note is that, in Brawl, there exists an alternate costume for Olimar with a foggy helmet, that some have interpreted as being a dark-skinned Olimar.

Gender variance[edit]

The following characters have alternate costumes that swap their gender.

It should be noted that Corrin and Byleth's trailers both imply that their respective subjects are genderfluid in the context of Smash, which may or may not apply to other characters.

Transformations[edit]

Bullet Bill[edit]

Through the Bullet Bill item.

Piranhacus Giganticus[edit]

Piranhacus Giganticus can be accessed through Super Mushroom, a dud Lightning Bolt, or Special Smash

Prickly Piranha Plant[edit]

Piranha Plant transforms into a Prickly Piranha Plant for its forward smash

Putrid Piranha[edit]

Piranha Plant transforms into a Putrid Piranha for its side special

Dynamax Pokémon[edit]

All Pokémon can become giant through Super Mushroom, a dud Lightning Bolt, or Special Smash

Ghosts[edit]

When players are hit by Pac-Man's Final Smash, Super Pac-Man, they transform into the Ghosts' eyes

Giant Donkey Kong[edit]

Giant Donkey Kong is considered a seperate character in 64.

Giant Donkey Kong can be played as through a Super Mushroom, a dud Lightning Bolt, or Special Smash

Metal Mario and Luigi[edit]

Metal Mario is considered a seperate character in both the Mario and Smash universes, while Metal Luigi is considered his own character in Melee

Both forms can be accessed through the Metal Box or Special Smash starting in Melee.

Stanley the Bugman[edit]

Mr. Game & Watch transforms into Stanley for his jab in Ultimate

World of Light[edit]

See Spirits with overworld effects. The only spirits featured in this article that will be listed here are ones that summon or function as some kind of vehicle.

Also note that, per the lore of World of Light, it could be argued that all Primary spirits are playable through possession.

Alfonzo and The Royal Engineer[edit]

Alfonzo and Engineer Link can drive a train, with the player character as a passenger.

Kapp'n[edit]

Two seperate Spirits of Kapp'n can pilot a bus and a boat individually, with the player character as a passenger.

Lapras[edit]

The player can ride a Lapras.

Master Hand[edit]

Master Hand is playable as a boss battle.

Pico[edit]

Pico pilots the Wild Goose with the player character as a passenger

ROB 64[edit]

ROB 64 can be used to repair the Great Fox, as he is the internal AI of the Great Fox, he could be considered playable even if one was to interpret the Great Fox as being piloted by the player character.

Slippy Toad[edit]

Slippy Toad can be used to repair the Great Fox, it is ambigious whether he or the player's character is piloting the ship.

Other[edit]

Arsène[edit]

Arsène will follow Joker's movements when summoned with Rebellion Gauge.

Coin Launcher[edit]

The Coin Launcher itself is playable. It is a turret with an unknown pilot.

Cranky Kong[edit]

Smash composites elements together from earlier and later Donkey Kong games, making the prospect of DK in Smash being Cranky Kong at least feasible. Some alternate costumes also resemble the arcade DK.

Credits Reticle[edit]

In the credits of 64, Melee, and Brawl, a reticle with an unknown pilot can shoot the credits.

Gomorrah[edit]

In Infernal Climax, the player can attack with Gomorrah as a quick time event, making it playable.

Mii Gunner's turrets[edit]

Mii Gunner's Final Smash has them summon Turrets, which can be controlled alongside Mii Gunner.

Phos and Lux[edit]

In Pit's Ultimate Final Smash, the player is granted control over the Lightning Chariot, with Phos and Lux drawn.

Zapper wielder[edit]

Many of Duck Hunt's moves have Zapper reticles featured.
