Hey, I'm an Ex-Smash Labber! I used to hang around the SmashCords Discords; while there, I was an administrator in the Terry Discord and Community Organizer in the King K. Rool Discord. I also labbed a few other characters sometimes, such as Donkey Kong and Duck Hunt. I also used contribute to Smogon as a moderator, one of the largest competitive Pokemon Communities.
On SmashWiki, aside from being an administrator these days, I'm basically the guardian of the King K. Rool page on this website because nobody else is gonna keep that thing up to standard. I also contributed heavily to his moveset pages, Command Input Special Moves, and Arcade controller. I spend time making Overviews on various moveset pages and providing technical/competitive information too. This game is very interesting from a mechanics standpoint and I like to share what I learned.
Oh, and I'm a VTuber, I guess.

Unplayable character documentation
In 2021, I published a proposal regarding documenting unplayable characters on SmashWiki. This was passed in early 2023, and I have since dedicated myself to making the pages for each of them. This list, with its redlinks, is basically my checklist. If you wish to help, by all means do, but contact me @plague_von_karma on Discord.
Candidacy
I personally hold the following standards for "unplayables".
- They must exist in the vanilla game.
- They must require minimal tinkering to be playable; eg. Occupying a character slot or having unused controls.
- They must have their own files and not strictly pull from another character's.
With these standards, the following would apply:
- Giga Bowser (SSBM) qualifies on account of being a fully independent character in his own character slot.
- Ridley (SSBB) and other Brawl bosses qualify on account of being a boss with debug controls unused in the game's files, which are easily re-enabled with Gecko codes.
- Dracula does not qualify due to an apparent lack of debug controls that would make him usable. Thus, he would require large-scale modifications to the game that place him outside the scope of the project.
- Giant Kirby does not qualify due to simply being Kirby with Super Mushroom power-ups.
- Metal Mario (SSB) and Giant Donkey Kong (SSB) qualify on account of them being their own characters, with their own slots, stock icons, and more. The naming conventions are superficial: The Metal Box and Super Mushroom do not exist in Smash 64.
These standards are fairly straightforward and what most people looking into this would expect.
Character Slot-bearing Unplayables
These characters can be controlled through simple character codes;
- Metal Mario (SSB)
- Giant Donkey Kong (SSB)
- Giga Bowser (SSBM)
- Male Wire Frame (SSBM)
- Female Wire Frame (SSBM)
- Red Alloy (SSBB)
- Yellow Alloy (SSBB)
- Green Alloy (SSBB)
- Blue Alloy (SSBB)
- Giga Bowser (SSBU)
Brawl Bosses
These characters can be controlled through a special debug code that enables boss controls for Player 4;
- Rayquaza (SSBB)
- Duon (SSBB)
- Galleom (SSBB)
- Ridley (SSBB)
- Meta Ridley (SSBB)
- Petey Piranha (SSBB)
- Porky (SSBB)
- Tabuu (SSBB)
To be revised
These pages are from before the new policy was established and need revamping to work akin to the above completed pages. A policy discussion is ongoing.
- Master Hand (SSB)
- Master Hand (SSBM)
- Crazy Hand (SSBM)
- Master Hand (SSBB)
- Crazy Hand (SSBB)
- Master Hand (SSB4)
- Crazy Hand (SSB4)
- Master Hand (SSBU)
- Crazy Hand (SSBU)
Characters of dubious playability
All of these characters are programmed as items and don't appear to have debug codes that make them playable (a la Brawl bosses). Thus, more research is required. It is likely that this could involve large-scale modding of the game beyond the scope of a simple CSS mod, which resultantly falls outside the scope of the project. If they lack any debug codes that would make them playable, then it's dead in the water to me.
- Master Core (SSB4)
- Galleom (SSBU)
- Rathalos (SSBU)
- Galeem (SSBU)
- Dracula (SSBU)
- Ganon (SSBU)
- Marx (SSBU)
- Dharkon (SSBU)
Indistinguishables
These characters appear to not necessarily be "unplayables," and thus need further research to vet them;
- Fighting Polygon Team - They occupy their own character slots, but have the same physics, hitboxes, and everything. May need further checks to see if they are like the Japanese versions of the characters. From what I can tell though, they pull from the same data, being essentially skins. If they were to get pages, the naming conventions would likely be how the 64 community does it (eg. "Polygon Mario").
- Fighting Mii Team - Seemingly just Mii Fighters; I don't see them being worth investigating regardless.
Resources
I used to spend a lot of time looking at scripts, using Ruben's KO Calculator and stuff like that. I find it fun labbing outside of Smash to theorycraft more effectively. Obviously tests in-game are done as well though! Here's my main resource hub. I keep absolutely everything I do on there, although there are links to more lab repos for specific characters among other things, so it can get a bit messy...
I do similar things for Pokemon, especially RBY!
Tournament placings
I sometimes play in tournaments; often WiFi ones, but sometimes offline. They're nothing extravagant and the tours are often small-ish scale. I'm considering participating in more. I only really go to tourneys if a friend is there. My most notable win would be Nabster at Smash Quarter, I guess, but he's not like, ridiculously high level. There are definitely more tourneys than just these, especially in regards to Brawl, but I can't find any records.
