Tournament summary
Melee
During the tournament, Hungrybox was yellow carded following his set with SFAT due to Crunch appearing on-stage as his coach after the first game when the rules disallowed coaching after round 2 pools, a rule that Crunch said he was unaware. This decision was met with controversy as the rules regarding coaching past pools would result in a match loss for the coached player which Hungrybox did not receive. However, SFAT was also allegedly being coached by G$, which resulted in the match standing; this led to even more controversy, as many people agreed that SFAT was not being coached at all by G$, as the action performed did not qualify under the definition. Furthermore, the official EVO rules state that any incident should be reported at the time it occurs, and will otherwise be ignored, so technically, Hungrybox should not have been carded at all.
This tournament marked both Armada and Mango's third appearances at an EVO Grand Final, with Armada making it through the Winner's side of the bracket while Mango entered through the Loser's side after falling to Armada in Winner's Finals and double-eliminating defending champion Hungrybox at 3rd. Armada defeated his longtime rival in Grand Finals 3-1, taking his second-ever EVO title and tying Mango with the most EVO titles for a Melee player.
Smash 4
The tournament saw the top 2 players from the previous iteration, Ally and Kameme, severely underperform, as both players were eliminated prior to top 48: Ally lost to Kuwa and MVD to place 49th, while kameme lost to Dom and Eon to place 65th. In addition, MkLeo also notably underperformed, losing to false and MuteAce for 65th. All three placements either tied or were the respective players' worst tournament placement up to that point.
After losing his Winner's Semis match to Larry Lurr, Salem ran through the Loser's bracket, defeating KEN, Tweek, and Larry Lurr in the runback to meet ZeRo in Grand Finals. After resetting the bracket 2-3, Salem barely managed to defeat ZeRo in game 5 of the second set by making a high-percent comeback, winning his first major/supermajor event, as well as the first major/supermajor win for a Bayonetta player.
Salem's run was similar to Hungrybox's Melee run from the previous year where they both lost their winners semis matches 0-2 against the #6 ranked player at that time (Larry Lurr and Plup, respectively), only to defeat them 3-1 in Loser's Finals after losing the first game and then win the tournament by playing a total of ten games against the #1 player at that time (ZeRo and Armada, respectively), with one of the two sets' game 5 requiring an unlikely comeback.
