Lucas (リュカ, Lucas) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. He was confirmed as a playable character on June 12th, 2018. Lani Minella reprises her role as Lucas, albeit through recycled voice lines.
Changes from Super Smash Bros. 4
Aesthetics
- As with all veterans returning from SSB4, Lucas's model features a more subdued color scheme. Similar to Brawl, some of the detailing on his clothes and weapons are more prominent, such as the vertical stitching of his socks.
- The Rope Snake's scales are more pronounced.
- Like other characters, Lucas always faces the screen regardless of which direction he turns. This affects his movesets as well (such as the end of his up tilt), all of which appear to be mirrored.
- Like Ness, Lucas makes a new face when hit, with his eyes growing somewhat larger and rounder.
- PK-based attacks are now cyan instead of pink.
- Like Ness, Lucas's victory theme is now the ending of "Eight Melodies" from both Mother / EarthBound Beginnings as well as "Eight Melodies" from EarthBound layered together.
- Lucas now strikes a different pose during his Seven Needles victory animation.
Attributes
- Lucas is slightly faster overall. The global changes to initial dashes especially benefit his ground movement.
- Like all characters, Lucas's jumpsquat animation now takes three frames to complete.
Ground attacks
- Jab's second hit can be interrupted sooner, improving its potential for mix-ups.
- Down tilt has increased hitlag.
- Up smash has a larger hitbox and has an additional blue layer to indicate the hitbox's increased size.
- Up smash has an increased window of intangibility on startup.
- Up smash has less endlag.
- Down smash covers more range, making it easier to edgeguard opponents.
- The three hits of Lucas's down smash are now treated as individual hitboxes, thus preventing opponents from shielding one hit and being immune to any following hits.
- Lucas now bends his elbow after each shot of down smash, and his fingers are more pronounced throughout.
Aerial attacks
- Neutral aerial's hitbox is larger.
- The landing lag on neutral aerial has been reduced by one frame, allowing the move to combo into tilts and jab easily.
- Neutral aerial's multihits have less hitlag, speeding up its execution upon connection. This makes the move more difficult to SDI out of.
- Neutral aerial now sends opponents behind or in front of Lucas at random, making it less consistent for combos in the air.
- Forward aerial has reduced landing lag.
- Back aerial's animation is faster.
- Back aerial can now spike grounded opponents. While this is benefited by opponents' inability to tech grounded spikes, this takes away Lucas's ability to send grounded opponents offstage from behind him.
- Up aerial's hitbox is bigger and has slightly less start up and landing lag.
- Down aerial has reduced landing lag.
- Grab aerial has decreased range.
- Grab aerial has more active frames.
- Grab aerial deals more damage on both the early and late hits.
Throws/other attacks
- Grab animations:
- The endings of Lucas's grabs now feature interruptible animations during which the Rope Snake doubles back to return to Lucas.
- Lucas's animation when holding a grabbed opponent has been altered; he now holds Rope Snake in one hand and uses the other to hold the opponent in place with telekinesis.
- Lucas now looks angry during his grab animation.
- Lucas's pummel animation now features Rope Snake lunging at the opponent.
- Standard grab:
- Lucas's standard grab range has been decreased.
- Lucas's standard grab has less endlag.
- Lucas has a new forward throw animation similar to Diddy Kong's forward throw.
- Up throw deals more knockback.
- Down throw:
- Lucas has a new down throw animation. Lucas lifts the opponent in the air using telekinesis, then forcefully slams them into the ground, sending them up and away.
- Down throw has more ending lag, hindering its follow-up potential.
Special Moves
- PK Freeze:
- Lucas's animations during the move have been tweaked; Lucas himself now completely faces the screen, and the particle effects of the explosion now feature the PK Freeze graphic effects from Mother 3.
- The projectile travels faster.
- The projectile can now travel through platforms.
- The move will no longer fail if the projectile connects with solid ground; instead, it can be held at the ground until the move reaches maximum charge.
- The projectile now launches opponents at a horizontal angle away from Lucas (no matter which direction he faces), making it better for edgeguarding.
- Lucas will no longer be sent into freefall when firing PK Freeze in the air.
- PK Fire:
- Lucas's hands now feature a red spark until PK Fire is fired, similarly to his finger in his down smash animation. The same spark appears when PK Fire successfully connects.
- PK Fire has slightly decreased endlag.
- PK Fire has increased damage.
- PK Fire has slightly increased landing lag.
- PK Thunder:
- Lucas’s PK Thunder's lightning is now blue, rather than maintaining its magenta coloration from Smash 4.
- PK Thunder travels slightly faster.
- Grounded PK Thunder has reduced ending lag.
- Lucas's momentum at the end of PK Thunder 2 is lower, slightly shortening its recovery distance.
- PK Thunder 2 has reduced landing lag.
- PSI Magnet:
- PSI Magnet now features its PSI graphics from Mother 3 upon use. Lucas' back is angled lower in the end of his animation, similar to the beginning of his run animation in Mother 3.
- PSI Magnet has less ending lag, meaning Lucas can act faster to attacks.
- PSI Magnet no longer halts Lucas's horizontal momentum in the air, akin to Ness's buff.
- PSI Magnet now features a hitbox which drags opponents closer to Lucas's hand on startup.
- PSI Magnet's launching hitbox is larger.
- PK Starstorm is now similar to its Brawl iteration, firing meteors inwards towards the center of the stage, but at a slower rate and with slower meteors. His pose during the move no longer reuses Ness's Final Smash animation and is instead replaced with one reminiscent of his animation in Brawl. Lucas is also assisted by Kumatora and Boney. Like his other PSI moves, the move features graphics from PK Starstorm's animation in Mother 3.
- If PK Starstorm is used via the Final Smash Meter, the trajectory of the meteors can be angled.
Role in World of Light
Lucas was absent in the World of Light trailer, though he presumably became a spirit alongside the rest of the galaxy (sans Kirby) when Galeem unleashed its beams of light.
